- KE058-066: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE058-066----. In pasture, on a plateau, c. 75m to the E of the Killarney-Tralee road. The rath is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) which is bisected by a NE-SW field boundary. It is indicated as a hachured arc NE-SW on the 1894 OS 6-inch map. The earthen bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H c. 0.6m; ext. H c. 3m) survives along the E and W arcs. The bank along the S arc has been pushed inwards and earth has been dumped along the area. In pasture, on a plateau, c. 130m S of a tributary of the Glanooragh River. A circular area (c. 60m E-W; c. 56m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.1m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m) which is lightly covered with overgrowth. Numerous gaps occur along the bank. The level interior is slightly raised. There is a possible entrance at NNW. Field boundaries (on an E-W axis) radiate from the bank externally at ENE and SE. A drainage ditch, which externally skirts the bank E-W, cuts into the base of the bank. This is probably the rath referred to in the 1840s as being in the N end of Gortnacarriga (OSNB, Aghadoe, no. 1, 28). In pasture, on a gentle SW-facing slope, c. 90m E of the Killarney-Tralee road. A circular area (c. 46m E-W; c. 42m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 5.45m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.25m) which is breached in numerous places. The interior slopes gently down to the SW and a circular raised area was noted towards the centre. A linear ridge (H c. 0.25m), on a N-S axis, is situated to the N of the centre. The remains of a hut site (KE058-092001-) are in the NE quadrant. There is a possible entrance at SE. A N-S field boundary tangentially abuts the bank externally along the W arc. An E-W field drain and boundary are situated to the S of the rath. Four piles of dumped material, probably from the field drain, were noted between the S arc of the rath and the field drain. An outer ring of hachures NW-SSE, indicated on the 1894 OS 6-inch map, could represent an outer bank or fosse. Within the NE quadrant of a rath (KE058-092----). The remains of a roughly circular hut (diam. 6.25m) defined by a grass-covered bank (H 1m; lowering to 0.6m at W) which abuts the bank of the rath internally along the NE arc. A road bridge (Wth 5.2m; long axis N-S) spanning a tributary of the Glanooragh River. It is built of random rubble sandstone with ashlar used for the sides of the abutments. There is a single segmental arch (span 3.25m) with roughly shaped voussoirs. The parapets have concrete coping and the N end of the E parapet has collapsed. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
