The location of this souterrain, on a S facing slope at the foot of Croaghskearda, is marked on the surface by a very slight mound. The monument is comprised of 3 chambers connected by short creepways. The 2 larger chambers are oval in plan and lie at right angles to one another; a creepway opening off the SE side of the N one leads to the smaller D-shaped chamber. Access is gained by removing 2 loose flags which cover a gap at the SW end of the roof of chamber 1, the southernmost chamber. (1) This oval chamber, aligned WNW-ESE, is 1.95m long, 1.1m wide at base and 1.45m high. It is roofed by 2 flat slabs as are the other 2 chambers. Apart from 2 upright slabs which define the entrance to a creepway passage, the walls are entirely constructed of very neat drystone walling. There is slight corbelling, particularly of the upper 4 or 5 courses, so that, at roof level, the chamber measures 1.7 x .7m. The creepway, .4m wide, .48m long and .5m high, leads from the NE side of Chamber 1 to the SW end of Chamber 2. Its side walls are formed by upright slabs and it is roofed by 2 lintels. (2) The middle chamber is oval in plan and is 1.75m long SSW-NNE, 1.5m wide at base and 1.6m high. Pronounced corbelling of the drystone walls reduces the chamber's dimensions to 1.1 x .65m at roof level. The creepway leading to Chamber 3 exits from the SE side. It is .4m wide, .47m long and .45m high, and is roofed by 2 lintels. The side walls are each formed by 2 upright slabs. (3) The 3rd chamber, 1.2m long SW-NE, 1.1m wide at base and 1.2m high, is D-shaped in plan and is built like the others. The creepway opens onto the middle of the curved wall. Opposite this, the straight SE wall is interrupted by a .5m wide recess which extends the full height of the chamber. This houses 2 steps, the risers of which are of drystone construction while the treads are earthen. This recess, a maximum of .5m deep, is roofed by 2 slabs laid at right angles to the 2 slabs which roof the chamber. This feature may have been the original entrance and also probably gave rise to the local name for the souterrain, Staighre Chaitlín (An Seabhac 1939, 162). The above description is derived from J. This souterrain consists of a single passage and chamber, roughly L-shaped in plan. Access is by means of a narrow aperture, .22m in maximum width, located at the S edge of a roadway which runs WNW-ESE above the chamber. This gap occurs between 2 roof slabs at the SE end of the passage which is aligned NW-SE. The passage measures at least 6m in length, 1.2m in width and 1.5m in maximum height. The SE end is blocked by collapse and the floor in the vicinity of the entrance is spread with soil and modern refuse intruded from above. The base of the side walls is constructed with upright slabs, averaging .7m in height, the remainder of the walls being of drystone construction. The upper 2 courses are slightly corbelled and 4 flat slabs roof the passage. 0.9m from the NW end of the NE wall is the entrance to the chamber. It consists of a porthole, .32m wide and .6m high, cut out of one of the upright slabs at ground level. The chamber is aligned NE-SW and measures 3.5m in length, 1m in width and 1.4m in height. It is roofed by 5 lintels, that adjacent to the entrance being positioned .4m lower than the others. The walls are constructed of upright slabs overlain by drystone masonry. Internal diam. 32.5m A roughly circular bivallate rath (KE044-076----) situated in poorly-drained pastureland on the S slopes of Croaghskearda. A clochaun (KE044-076001-) and souterrain (KE044-076002-) have been recorded in the interior. The 2 enclosing banks and fosses are densely overgrown, and the outer fosse and W half of the inner fosse have been converted into drains in an attempt to drain the surrounding land; the E portion of the inner fosse is also fairly waterlogged, but the stream does not flow through this sector. The present dimensions of the outer fosse therefore reflect modern interference and the upper portion of the outer bank (c. 1m) appears to consist of upcast from this secondary use. The outer fosse is 2.2m wide and 1.1m deep. The outer bank rises 2.5m above the outer fosse and is 5m wide at base. The inner fosse is 4m wide at base. The inner bank rises 1.75 above the fosse, 1m above the interior and is c. 4m wide at base. The entrance faces E. Two gaps at N and S are modern features. The clochaun noted by Curran (no.1) is not now discernible, but one of the stony mounds in the interior probably marks its location. It was 13 feet (4m) in diameter. Curran also noted a souterrain about 16 feet (4.8m) from the inner face of the bank at S. Two channels or depressions which radiate out from the bank at SW may be related to this. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
