New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The structure is rectangular in plan and is located to the immediate south of a slight rise in the landscape, utilising natural rock outcropping to form part of its north and east sides. The structure is constructed with random loose stones and measures 5m northeast-southwest by 2.6m northwest-southeast, the wall remnants are generally one course in width, an average of 0.5m. The walls are of greater height internally (max. 0.8m) than externally (c.0.5m) suggesting either the utilisation of a natural hollow or a slight purposeful reduction of the internal floor level. The southwest wall of the structure extends beyond the outer face of the southeast wall and creates an entrance 0.6m in width (Cronin et. al. 2018, 47, 51). New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The rectangular structure is constructed with random, loose dry-stones and is located to the immediate west of steeply sloping, craggy, higher ground which provides shelter to the southeast, east and northeast. There are views of the Roughty River valley to the west and southwest. The structure measures c.3.8m in length east-west by 3.5m in width north-south. The west wall is best preserved being eight courses and 1.2m in height, with a wall width of 0.75m. The south wall is also 0.75m in width but is only one to two courses high with an average height of 0.8m. The east wall, measuring 2.1m in length with an average height of 0.8m, is shortened due to the presence of a probable entrance in the northeast corner of the structure. A constructed wall is less evident on the north side of structure as it appears to be partially dug into the hillside and utilising natural rock outcropping in this area. The interior of the structure, which measures c. 3m east-west by 2m north-south, is at a similar level to the surrounding exterior. A low mound of earth and stone measuring 0.6m in height, which possibly forms an annex, extends in an arc from the northwest corner of the structure terminating at a point 1.5m west of the west wall and 1.4m south of the northern limit of the structure. New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. This deposit, which has been interpreted as a possible ‘burnt spread’, is located in a sheltered hollow at an elevation of 330m with rising ground to the south and west and with a smaller rise to the northwest. The spread measured 6.5m north-south by 4m east-west within an expanded area centred on the original test trench. Steeply sloping ground to the south of the site precluded this area form being extended and although the spread was observed to be extending beyond the southern baulk of the opened area, the terrain conditions mean it is unlikely that the deposit extends to any great extent in this direction. The spread is bounded on its west, northwest and north sides by a small stream which flows through large sub-rounded stones in a southwest to northeast orientation. The stream flows under the present-day peat level and was not evident at surface level. To the immediate east of the stream a number of large, generally sub-rounded stones are evident sitting within the charcoal rich peaty soil and fragmented stone matrix forming an arc measuring c.1m in width east-west and 1m in length north-south. An increased charcoal concentration was evident within the peaty soil/fragmented stone matrix and the overlying peaty soil in the vicinity of the arc of stones. A stone on the east side of the spread, which was loosened during the initial centre line trenching, allowed a deposit depth of 0.2m to be observed at this point. New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. A man-made stone bank, constructed of loose, large sub-angular and sub-rounded stones, which possibly forms part of a collapsed relict field boundary was uncovered underlying 0.25m to 0.30m of peaty soil approximately 40m to the southwest of NICH04 at ITM grid co-ordinate 508169, 568593. The stone bank, which measured 1.5m in width east-west and had a maximum height of 0.45m, was evident crossing the trench in a north-south orientation. It was constructed above a light brownish grey, stony, clayey silt subsoil. Unlike the majority of field boundaries, hut sites and other stone-built constructions in the project area, there was no surface indication of the presence of this feature. While a number of previously identified hut sites (CH26-30) are located in the vicinity to the southwest, it is possible that this feature is of greater antiquity than the majority of evident sites as it was revealed underlying 0.25m to 0.3m of peaty soil. An additional 20m long east-west orientated test trench was excavated 15m to the north of the centre line trench. No further trace of the stone feature was uncovered within this trench. The access route was subsequently realigned over 50m to the north, no evidence of the stone bank was revealed during archaeological monitoring of this section of the route. New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The remains of a previously unidentified hut site were observed utilising the natural L-shaped formation of two of the large rocks to the east and north of the centre line of the original planned access spur to T.07 at ITM grid co-ordinate 509948, 569911. Two low walls comprising random, loose stones, one measuring 2.7m east-west and another measuring 6.4m north-south were constructed against the L-shaped rock formation to form a rectangular structure. The wall remains were a maximum of 0.4m or four courses in height, and one course or 0.5m in width. A 0.7m wide gap at the south end of the west wall may represent an entrance, the internal dimensions of the structure measure 5.2m north-south by 2.1m east-west. An additional wall, measuring 1.1m in length north-south and 0.9m in height, blocks a gap between the two natural rock formations in the northeast corner of the structure. The wall is lowest along its eastern portion where it is only one course and c. 0.2m to 0.3m high. The wall generally measures between 0.7m and 1m wide. There is evidence of partial wall collapse on all sides of the enclosure. The drystone enclosure most likely represents the remains of an animal pen. Local information suggests that the enclosure functioned as a cattle pen as recently as the early 20th century. See attached photograph courtesy John Cronin. New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The remains of rudimentary hut site, constructed adjacent to a large boulder northeast of the proposed BP-F location at ITM Grid co-ordinate 508585, 568745. Situated on a gently-sloping but very rocky patch of hillside 40m south-west of confluence of two small streams (which ultimately flow west down to the Roughty river). The vegetation cover in this rocky patch is characterised by grass and heather because the soil is relatively dry. However, outside this rocky patch the ground is waterlogged and characterised by sedge and moss vegetation. The structure consists of a roughly square patch of ground enclosed on the north and south sides by arranged stones, and on the east by aforementioned large boulder. Opening on the west looking downslope. The south side is formed by a long stone with a couple placed stones at either end. The north has several arranged stones. Dimensions: Internal: 2m (EW) x 1.8m (NS); External: 2.5m (EW) x 2.8m (NS); Int. wall height: 0.2m; Avg. wall width: 0.5m. This structure is likely the remains of a shelter that was used by herders of livestock before a farmstead was established 500m to the west in the 19th century, by the Roughty river. The upper portions of the walls and the roof were probably made of peaty sods and/or wattle. See attached photograph courtesy John Cronin.
