In rough pasture, on a NW-facing slope overlooking the estuary of the Finnihy River. The burial ground (c. 50m NW-SE; c. 40m SW-NE) is enclosed by a drystone wall at SW and traces of a curving earthen bank SW-NE; elsewhere it is defined by uneven ground and overgrowth. Graves are marked by low uninscribed headstones (H 0.2-0.4m), usually with accompanying footstones. Several low unmarked mounds were also noted. In the NW half of the interior, a strip of ground (Wth c.15m) slopes steeply down to the riverbank and here the graves are shaded by coniferous trees. Elsewhere the ground is uneven and densely overgrown with bushes and ferns. The burial ground is named 'Killeen Burial Gd.' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map and indicated as a rectangular area enclosed by a field boundary on the SW side and by a broken line on the other three sides with the NW side curving slightly. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In level pasture, on the SW outskirts of Kenmare town. A subcircular area (17m E-W; 15m N-S) is enclosed by fifteen stones (L 0.8-1.6m; T 0.2-0.7m; H 0.3-1.2m), two of which are prostrate. The axial stone is the lowest and is a regular flat-topped slab contrasting with most of the other stones, which with one or two exceptions, are of boulder type. A boulder-burial (KE093-032002-) occupies the centre of the stone circle. In level pasture, on the SW outskirts of Kenmare town and centrally placed within a multiple-stone circle (KE093-032001-). A rounded boulder with a flattish top (2.1m x 1.8m; T 0.8m) rests above three support-stones, which form a small chamber-like arrangement open at E. Support-stones are of rather similar dimensions, averaging 0.9m x 0.6m and 0.2m H. The boulder rests directly on the stones at N and S, and on a small pad-stone above the support-stone at W. There is a small cupmark on the upper surface of the boulder. In a public park at the head of Kenmare Bay and on a narrow promontory projecting S into the bay. The town of Kenmare lies immediately to the N. This fort is named 'Neeleene [Nedeen] forte' on the Down Survey barony map (1655-6) of Glanarought (Hib. Reg.). It is indicated as the site of Cromwell's Fort on the 1841 and 1892 OS 6-inch maps on the W side of the road which runs the length of the promontory. There are no visible remains of the fort on the W side of the road but in a field on the E side of the road there are traces of a fosse and a level platform which may have formed part of a bastioned fort. According to Kerrigan (1995, 99), 'the fort was an earthwork and was only used for a short time' and 'a description of about 1685 notes it as ruined, having been built in Cromwellian times'. There are no visible remains of the 'tower' [KE093-036001-] called 'Cromwell's Fort' which was mentioned by Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 38) as being 'near the ferry, or Sound'. In 1841 the Ordnance Survey recorded the following details about this fort; 'Close to this little town of Kenmare which is popularly called Nedeen is shown the site of a fort which was erected by Cromwell for subduing the O'Sullivans. This fort is mentioned in a manuscript Account of Kerry written about a century and a half since and now preserved in the manuscript library of Trinity College Dublin. I.L.3 p. 11. This barony, as also the forementioned barony of Magunihi, was formerly very woody, affording most stately timber, but now it is mostly destroyed by the devouring ironworks; the spacious bay of Killmare [récte Kin. J.O'D] insinutates itself on the north-west side of this barony, at the mouth whereof the late Usurper built a fort called Nedeen, but at the best it was but inconsiderable, and is now totally demolished' (O'Donovan 1983, 234). On street corner at S side of The Square, Kenmare. A long, L-shaped building of two storeys constructed of ashlar. Front elevation (NE) faces on to The Square and is of three bays; at ground level is an arcade of three cut-stone arches which originally led to an open area but which has now been closed off with access via a doorway inserted in the left arch. There are two roughly square window opes on the first floor flanking a central clock. The roof of this front part of the building is hipped with a deep projecting cornice. The long side elevation (NW) facing onto Pound Street is of ten bays. The first bay on left forms part of front section of building and has a slightly higher roofline than the rest of the elevation; on ground floor it has a single round-headed window within an arched recess; on the first floor is a roughly square window matching those of the front elevation. The rest of this side elevation is gable-ended and has nine arched opes on the ground floor, six containing windows and three containing doorways. On the upper floor are four roughly square window opes. A broad string-course extends around the two visible elevations, separating the ground floor from the first floor. Of late 18th-/early 19th-century date. Now in mixed use. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. In Kenmare, c. 100m W of Henry Street and c. 200m E of the Finnihy River. The house is of 18th-century appearance although parts of it may be earlier in date. The one-storey entrance front (N-facing) is of six bays and has a two-storey gabled projection at an obtuse angle to its E end. A walled garden with bee boles lies to the E and there is an ice house to the N. A large covered well, said by locals to be medieval, is to the E in the garden of a bungalow. The house is named 'Monastery' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. According to local information, there was a monastic community living here although there is some confusion as to whether this was in the medieval period or in more recent centuries. Cromwell's Bridge: This bridge, titled 'Finnihy Bridge' on the first edition of the OS map, crosses the Finnihy river on the W side of Kenmare town. The river serves as the boundary between the baronies of Dunkerron South and Glanarought. It has been suggested that the bridge's present name, rather than reflecting an association with Cromwell, is an anglicised version of the Irish word Croiméal (moustache) or may derive from an amalgam of the words Croim (stooped) and Maol (bald) - the latter term sometimes being used to describe bridges without a parapet (Sheehan and Cronin, forthcoming). Pococke's description of 'a high bridge and one arch', which he crossed during his travels in 1758 (Ó Maidín 1958, 93) most likely refers to this site. Cromwell's Bridge appears to be the type usually referred to as a pack-horse bridge (Metcalfe 1970, 25). It is formed of a high semicircular arch of pitched limestone, bonded in a heavy gravel mortar. The arch was raised on wooden centring, as is evidenced by two large beam-holes at the NW base of its intrados; dense ivy growth obscures the opposite base. The span of the arch is 4.9m and it measures 3.05m wide. Ramps may have originally led to the level of its haunches, which are now difficult to ascend. The bridge may have been built by William Petty's settlers at 'Nedeen' (Kenmare) in the late seventeenth century. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1456. In mixed pasture and woodland, close to the S shore of a tidal inlet extending to the W from Kenmare Bay. The area is known locally as Reenagross and is covered by spring tides. A roughly oval raised area (37.1m NE-SW; 26.8m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 1.9m; int. H 0.35m; H 1m) NE-WSW with only slight traces of it elsewhere. A shallow fosse (Wth 1.15m) is evident N-E and SSW-W with a short stretch filled-in at SW. A low outer bank (Wth 0.75m; H 0.1m; ext. H 0.2m) is evident N-W. There are several cattle-breaks around the perimeter. A possible entrance (Wth 1.5m) with an earthen ramp is at E. The interior rises gently towards the centre and in general it is raised c. 1m above the outer ground level. A souterrain (KE093-099002-), c. 80m to the NW, is close to the opposite shore of the inlet. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
