Internal diam. 22m E-W, 20m N-S This slightly oval univallate rath lies on the E side of the Trabeg inlet on a slight N facing slope. The E section of the earthen enclosing bank has been partly destroyed. The W section, now incorporated into and confused by the field boundary system, is so densely overgrown that accurate measurement was not possible but it is at least 3m high externally. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 484. The 'Gallaun' marked on the 1st edition of the OS map no longer survives; only its site was noted on the 2nd edition. The land slopes very gently NW towards Trabeg and the tidal estuary of the Owenalondrig river. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 154. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. The circular univallate enclosure marked on the 1st edition of the OS map survives only as a raised area of rough uncultivated ground measuring 14m NE-SW x 10m NW-SE x a maximum of 1.5m in height. Slight traces of the NW part of the enclosing bank survive. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Internal diam. 26.5M This circular univallate rath with souterrain lies on a NW facing slope overlooking the entrance to the Trabeg inlet. A shallow fosse is present around much of the W half of the enclosure and a stream skirts the SE sector. The fosse is no more than .5m deep. The bank rises up to 3.25m above the fosse and 2m above the interior. Its inner flank is faced with drystone masonry. A 5.5m wide break in the bank at S probably marks the original entrance and a 3m wide break at NNW appears to be secondary. The S part of the interior is occupied by an oval feature enclosed along its N side by a .75m high bank and along its S side by a drop of .75m from the general ground level in the rath interior. It measures c. 21.5m E-W x 8m N-S. A stone-lined hole at its S end may relate to the souterrain noted in the OSNB (Kinard, 19). A large slab of stone set into the outer face of the bank, on the W side of the entrance, may also be related. Tobernastellagh (KE053-081001-) lies directly outside the enclosure at SW. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 485. Tobermurry/Tobar Muire (Mary's Well): One of 3 closely-grouped holy wells situated at the foot of the NW slopes of Beenmore overlooking Trabeg. The site is now marked by a grotto which houses a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is visited on the 2nd of February, the 25th of March, the 15th of August and the 8th of December (Ó Danachair 1960, 75). Ó Danachair (1960, 75) recorded the following details about these 3 holy wells; 'In fact there are three wells close together, "Tobar Muire", Tobar Fionain" [KE053-083----] and "Tobar Michil" [KE053-091----]. The first two are still visited, the third no longer. Days of devotion at Tobar Fionain on the 12th of February (St. Fionan Mac Earannain) and at Tobar Muire on 2nd February, 25th March, 15th August and 8th December, and (formerly) at Tobar Michil on 29th September. The ritual at the selected well is (a) a prayer to the patron of the well, (b) one rosary said kneeling at the well, (c) nine circuits of the well during each of which one pater and one ave is said; these rounds are counted with pebbles, (d) one decade said kneeling at the well, and finally water is drunk and the hands and face washed. If several are present the prayers may be said aloud. Small objects are left as offerings; there usually are fresh flowers in small vases or jars. Rounds are made on behalf of sick persons unable to come, and water from the three wells is taken home to them to drink. Tobar Muire and Tobar Fionain are in little masonry structures, the former with a small statue of Our Lady, the latter with a cross on which is the date 1918 (which refers to the edification of the wells at that date in thanksgiving for the many cured of the influenza epidemic by water from the wells). Legend: Saints Fionan and Michael landed here from Sceilg Mhichil, and the wells sprang up at their prayers'.
