In rough pasture, on a SW-facing slope, c. 10m E of a stream. A roughly circular area (diam. c. 30m), covered with overgrowth, defined by an earthen bank SE-E and by a scarp (H 1.45m) E-SE. The bank was difficult to examine due to the overgrowth. A possible fosse (Wth 2.3m) is visible in places, especially along the SW arc and NW-NE. The fosse at NW and SW splays outwards towards the stream to the NW and W, respectively. The external edge of the fosse is covered with overgrowth. There is a possible entrance through the bank at S. Possible stone-facing is evident on the internal face of the bank at either side of the entrance. The bank is broken by a possible cattle gap at W. The interior is completely covered with overgrowth. It is indicated on the 1892 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) with field boundaries radiating from it at N, ESE and SSW and with the second rath adjoining it along its NW arc. The opening to a souterrain (KE038-033001-) is visible in the interior of this levelled rath. In a coniferous wood, on a S-facing slope, on the E bank of a river. Access to the area was difficult due to a dense undergrowth which hindered inspection. This possible enclosure is indicated by a dashed line defining an oval area (c. 40m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the 1882 OS 6-inch map. There is no local knowledge of this possible enclosure. In pasture, on a SSE-facing slope, just N of a small stream. An irregular-shaped rock outcrop (2.3m E-W; 2.1m N-S; H 0.55m) which tilts to the W, on the NW side of a slight mound (6.1m N-S; 4.8m E-W). On the W side of the outcrop a grouping of faint, weathered rock art is divided by a natural split. The rock art consists of a cup-and-two rings and three cup-marks situated to the W of the split. On the E side of the split a cup-and-three rings adjoined to a ring, within which is a cross-like pattern. There is a cupmark at the intersection of the adjoining rings. The cross-like pattern is similar to those described in an article by O hÉailidhe (1958, 75) as the Rathdown slabs. There is an ogham inscription (KE047-105001-) on the W side of the same rock outcrop. There are other rock outcrops exposed on the W and S areas of the mound. Date of upload: 30 May 2011 Inventory Style Entry In improved pasture (24m OD), upon a low lying area, at base of a S-facing slope; Stream is c. 75m to S. In valley of River Maine with excellent views of Gap of Dunloe to S and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to SW. A pair of earthfast rocks split from the same outcrop and situated 0.7m apart, upon a low mound. The W rock is a smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 2.90m N-S; 2.30m E-W) having a flat, irregular decorated surface (dims. 0.80m N-S; 0.50m E-W) bearing decorative rock art elements. The motifs are weathered and consist of a central cup-and-four-ring motif (ring Wth 1.5-2.5cm; D 3mm; cup diam. 5.5cm; D 3mm) having a partial fourth ring around W side which is truncated by a natural fracture (long-axis c. N-S) to W. A single cup-and-ring motif is adjacent to N. A single-ring motif and a single cupmark are to S. Ogham inscription (KE047-105001-) is inscribed (L 0.93m) along spine of stone, adjacent to E of rock art. The E rock is a smooth and unfractured sandstone (dims. 3.20m N-S; 2.05m E-W; max. H 1m) having an irregular decorated surface (dims. 0.35m N-S; 0.50m E-W) with a W-facing aspect, at N end of rock. The motifs are weathered and consist of seven cupmarks (diam. 4-8cm; D 3mm). In pasture, on a SSE-facing slope, just N of a small stream. An irregular shaped rock outcrop (2.3m E-W; 2.1m N-S; H 0.55m) which tilts to the W, is situated on the NW side of a slight mound (6.1m N-S; 4.8m E-W) (Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC). There is extensive rock art (KE047-105----) on the upper and eastern faces, while the W face is blank. The ogham inscription is 'on a natural ridge on the top of the broad face' (Moore in Condit and Corlett 2005, 23). The only plausible reading requires inversion of the H and B series of letters. It then reads from R to L: SE..MAC..QENIAECE....A.......S. The scores (L 7cm; T 1cm) and notches (L 3cm) are cut deeply into the rock, with 1cm between each. A possible standing stone (KE047-106----) is c. 150m to the S. In improved pasture (21m OD), upon a low lying area, at base of a S-facing slope; Stream is c. 75m to S. In valley of River Maine with excellent views of Gap of Dunloe to S and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to SW. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 3.6m E-W; 1.2m N-S) which is irregular in plan and is just above the existing ground level. It has a subrectangular decorated surface (dims. 1.55m E-W; 0.7m N-S) which is generally flat with a very slight N-facing tilt. The motifs are in a reasonably good condition and consist of a number of decorative elements. There are at least fourteen cupmarks (5-6cm; Dth 4-5mm) distributed across the stone. There are three cup-and-one ring motifs: The smallest cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 14cm x 11cm; cup diam. 4.5cm; D 3mm; ring Wth 2-2.5cm; D 2mm) and the largest cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 20cm x 18cm; cup diam. 5cm; D 4mm; ring Wth 2cm; D 2mm). Possibly a very faint outline of a fourth, larger cup-and-ring motif adjacent to W. Rock art (KE047-105----) is c. 2.6m to S. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
