Situated on the lower S slopes of Moanlaur, in rough pastureland c. 60m E of a small stream, is a building known locally as An Bácús (the bake-house). It measures 8.5m N-S x 4.8m E-W externally, and is roughly rectangular in plan with a rounded N end; the walls are now no more than 1.1m high. Internally the building is divided into two sections by an E-W cross-wall. The N chamber is circular in plan internally measuring 1.6m in diameter and no more than .7m in height. There is no entrance, but a low flue, .9m long x .4m wide, extends through the cross-wall at ground level. A low step on the S side of the cross-wall is partly obscured by collapse, but if it continued across the opening men this latter would only have been a few cms high. The S section of the building is rectangular in outline and measures 3.2m E-W x 3.6m N-S internally. The entrance may have been either in the E or W walls where 2 opposed sections of the walls stand only 2 courses high. The NE corner is occupied by a small circular corbelled chamber which is intact except for the SW section where the original opening must have been located. The original internal floor level is obscured by collapse but the chamber measures at least .87m in diameter and .65m in height. The outlines of 2 further rectangular structures, or a single structure with an internal division, adjoin the S end of the building, the walls reduced to low bands of stone collapse. Directly S of these again is a large sub-circular spread of loose stones measuring c. 15m in diameter. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1523. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. A standing stone situated in rough pastureland on the S slopes of Moanlaur, overlooking Castlemaine Harbour. Now inclined to SW, it would stand 3.22m high if erect; c. NE-SW. The maximum dimensions, .61m x .35m, occur midway up the stone; from here it tapers towards the top and decreases in width but increases in thickness towards the base. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 128. Estimated internal diam. 25m An Lios: This very ruined cashel lies at the foot of Moanlaur, about 150m from the N shore of Castlemaine Harbour. It is shown on the 2nd edition of the OS map as a semi-circular field, open to N. A field wall has recently been built across this latter side and the fence bounding the E half of the site has been removed. It appears that the semi-circular field fence respects the earlier cashel whose wall lies c. 3m inside it. Only the SW section of the cashel wall is traceable and even this has been reduced to a low, stony bank, c. 3.6m wide and up to .75m high. There are possible traces of 2 stone structures in the NW part of the modern enclosure but dense vegetation and disturbance by cattle prevent definite interpretation. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 585. Lack Chapel: In 1469 'David Fissmoris' was rector of the parish church of 'Balehedirsgeoil with its annexed chapel of Leac' (Cal Pap Reg, 12, 679). The present remains at Lack are those of a Roman Catholic Chapel built in 1810 (Lewis 1837, 120) and there is no trace of any older edifice. The site lies E of Inch on the S side of the peninsula. Internal diam. c. 20m Situated on a gentle S facing slope about 150m from the N shore of Castlemaine Harbour, this circular cashel contains the remains of a clochaun and souterrain. Stones have been robbed from the site in the past to provide building material for fences and roads. The enclosing wall is reduced, for the most part, to a stony bank, but both inner and outer wall faces are traceable at SSE and the wall thickness here is 2.5m. A .4m wide gap at SW probably marks the original entrance. A N-S field wall skirts the E side of the cashel, and the angles between this and the cashel wall are occupied by a stony platform of unknown function. The platform is c. 0.65m high, and the presence of some facing stones at SSE, about 2m beyond the outer face of the cashel, suggest that the platform may formerly have been delimited by a retaining wall. Clochaun: The wall of the hut has collapsed inwards obscuring most of its inner face. Only a single course of the outer face is visible and this, like the faces of the cashel wall, is composed of slabs set on edge rather than laid flat. The hut is circular in plan and has an overall diameter of 7.75m. Souterrain: This is located in the W part of the interior and consists of a short passage aligned roughly NNE-SSW. It measures 3.4m in length x c. 0.8m in width and the drystone-built walls incline inwards slightly towards the flagged roof. The floor is obscured by collapse and the maximum height of the passage is now only .7m. Though the N end of the passage is considerably collapsed there appears to have been an end wall at this point. The S end is completely blocked by collapse and the passage may have continued further in this direction. The well entrance occurs at the S end of the accessible section. Within the same field are 2 unclassified features whose relationship, if any, with the cashel is unknown. A rectangular, stony platform, 8m N-S x 3.15m E-W x .4m high, lies 52m to SW of the cashel. A low, earthen ridge, 3.15m wide x .25m high, extends for at least 30m to N of this. A slightly crescent-shaped, grass-grown mound of stones lies c. 80m to S of the cashel. It measures 11.2m NE-SW x c. 2.8m in width x c. 1m in height. A large, irregularly-shaped depression, up to 3.6m in diameter, lies c. 3.5m to SW of the W end of the mound. It is enclosed by a low bank of grass-grown stones and the interior also appears to be stony. The origin of these features is not clear. The above description is derived from J.
