In level pasture. A circular area (diam. 34m) defined by two earthen banks, an intervening fosse and the remains of an outer fosse. The inner bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.95m) slopes gently down to the interior. The intervening fosse (Wth 3m) is flat bottomed and is waterlogged N-S. The outer bank (Wth 3.1m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.35m) survives NE-N with the NE arc truncated by a linear road boundary. The outer bank along the NW arc has been incorporated into the field boundary system. There is a causeway entrance through the inner (Wth 2m) and outer (Wth 3m) banks at SW. Stone facing on the NW side of this entrance, in the outer bank, continues along the internal face of the bank for a couple of metres. An outer fosse (Wth 0.8m; D 0.5m) is visible S-SSW. The interior, in which reeds grow, is concave. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. In pasture, on a low rise, on an E-facing slope. The remains of the possible rath are visible as a low intermittent rise defining a circular area (diam. c. 38m) abutting a field boundary on the NE side. It is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as an oval area (c. 50m N-S; c. 40m E-W) with an E-W field boundary crossing the N portion of the interior. In pasture, on level ground, c. 100m to the N of the River Laune. This rath is not visible at ground level. According to local information, it was levelled in the 1970s. It is indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map and as a roughly circular enclosure on the 1894 OS 6-inch map, where it is depicted similarly to the surrounding field boundaries. In pasture, on a S-facing slope, overlooking the valley of the River Laune. A circular area (diam. c. 36m) defined by a low rise. This rath is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 60m). According to local information, this was a bivallate rath with two substantial banks and a deep intervening fosse and it was levelled in the 1970s. In level pasture, on the edge of a S-facing slope with impressive views S to Macgillycuddy's Reeks. A circular area (35m E-W) defined by a partially eroded earthen bank (Wth 8.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8m) ENE-WNW and by a low rise WNW-NW. The bank is obscured by overgrowth along the S arc. An overgrown E-W earthen field boundary crosses the interior to the N of the centre. This may be the 'circular fort', recorded in the 1940s on Mr Sugrue's lands at Lahard and which had 'one bank, and [was] 100ft [30.48m] in diameter' (ITA). In pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. This possible rath is not visible at ground level though a low rise (diam. c. 35m) is visible in the vicinity. It was indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m). This may be one of two raths (see KE065-018----) mentioned in the 1940s as being in the same field and 'about 200 yards [183m] apart' in Kelly's farm (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). One rath was described as being 'very big' with 'two earthen circular rings' and the other was a 'single ring fort' (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). In pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. This possible rath is not visible at ground level. It is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) with a curving field boundary, which may be the remains of an outer bank, respecting it S-NW. This may be one of two raths (see KE065-017----) mentioned in the 1940s as being in the same field and 'about 200 yards [183m] apart' in Kelly's farm (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). In pasture, on a S-facing slope, immediately N of the Killarney-Killorglin road (T67) and overlooking the valley of the Laune River. The rath is indicated on the 1846 and 1895 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) abutted by the road. Only the N half of the rath remains and consists of an arc (C 42m) of a low rise (Wth 4.45m; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.8m) W-E. The interior slopes down to the S. Road widening in 1994, resulted in the excavation of the S half of the rath and provided evidence that it may have been bivallate (Connolly 1995, 45-6). The excavation revealed that the inner bank 'was constructed using a stone core which was then covered with earth' and that it contained a subcircular round-bottomed pit (0.58m x 0.6m; D 0.2m), filled with charcoal, burnt soil, iron slag and fused stone, at a depth of 0.4m from the top (ibid., 46). A partially infilled flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 1.9m; max. D 2.2m) was also found and an earthen boundary (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.15m), with a stone core, located between the road and the rath was identified as a possible outer bank (ibid., 45). No habitation layer was found within the interior and the only finds were modern pottery and one fragment of a clay pipe (Connolly 1995, 46).
