This stone-built souterrain, not marked on the OS maps, is located in rough pasture at the head of the Ballinskelligs river valley. It is not now accessible but a small aperture between its roofing slabs enables a portion of a drystone-built passage to be viewed. This runs NNE-SSW and is at least 2m long, c. 8m wide, and c. .5m high. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 892. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. This boulder-burial and standing stone are located on the lower NNE slopes of Canuig mountain, at the head of the valley of the Ballinskelligs river. They are situated in pasture, on a fairly level terrace, and command a view of Ballinskelligs Bay. The wedge tomb at Coom (KE097-021----) is visible to ESE. The boulder-burial consists of a flat slab supported on four low stones. Two of these stones, those on the upslope side, are largely obscured by hillwashed material. The other two measure .48m x .38m x .15m and .52m x .47m x .13m. A pad-stone rests on the support stone at ESE, and measures .3m x .25m x .1m. Seven solution pits occur on the smooth upper surface of the cover-stone, whose longer axis lies NNE-SSW. The stone is raised approximately .15m above internal ground level, and its maximum dimensions are 1.97m x 1.57m. It averages .4m thick (Ó Nualláin 1978, 97). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 379. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. A tall standing stone (KE097-017002-), marked 'Gallaun' on the second edition of the OS maps, is aligned N-S and occurs 4m to N of the boulder-burial. The stone widens marginally as it rises and then tapers inwards toward the top. It stands 2.5m high and measures 1.08m x .3m at base. Lynch recorded an 'alignment' of stones adjacent to the boulder-burial at N, three of the stones protruding one foot (.3m) above the ground surface (1902b, 336). The central stone was a boulder of white quartz. Today the field is ploughed and only one prostrate stone, 1.35m long and located 1m NW of the boulder-burial, survives. It formerly stood upright (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. At the head of the Ballinskelligs river valley, on gentle SE facing pasture, one field S of a standing stone and boulder-burial (KE097-017001-). A field clearance cairn now occupies the location of this possible hut, removed sometime during the 1960s. Lynch recorded the site as a 'circle of stones', 36 feet (10.97m) in diameter. Eleven stones were set on edge and the largest of these measured 9 feet 9 inches (2.97m) x 2 feet (.61m) x 1 foot (.3m) thick. One stone was located in the interior at N (1902b, 338). At the head of the Ballinskelligs river valley, on gentle SE facing pasture and about 50m SSE of a levelled hut (KE097-018----). The site has been disturbed at NW by ploughing and at NE by the erection of a house. Recorded by Lynch as an ill-defined circle of stones containing much debris (1902b, 340), the site now survives as a pair of opposed uprights set .8m apart and averaging .4m high. A short, curved stretch of stony bank extends from both uprights and may originally have formed a circle. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
