This stone, located on top of a hill on the lower E slopes of Knocknafreaghane, commands an impressive vista to N along the Ardsheelhane river valley. Of rectangular elevation, it stands 1.3m high and has an oval basal plan measuring 1.2m x .35m; NNE-SSW. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 197. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. The site, comprising three standing stones, is located in a level tract of bog on the lower W slopes of Knocknafreaghane, and overlooks the N end of the Ardsheelhane river valley. The stones are marked ‘Gallauns’ on the second edition of the OS map. That at E is the tallest, standing 1.15m high and tapering in elevation to a point. It measures .7m x .5m at base; E-W. 19.15m to W is a small rectangular block, .55m high and measuring .45m x .3m at base; NNE-SSW. 1m to NE is the smallest of the three stones, standing .42m high and measuring .33m x .27m at base; NE-SW. Three large slabs, averaging 1m x .8m x .2m thick, occur between the upright stones at N. Two are prostrate and one is set on edge. Four fionnán enclosures occur in close proximity to the monument. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 257. This collapsed and flooded souterrain, not marked on the OS maps, is located on top of a rise in boggy pasture on the E side of the Ardsheelhane river valley. Its location has been fenced-off due to its dangerous condition. There are two openings, 3.6m apart, both the result of collapsed roofing slabs. These allow viewing of a lintelled passage with sides of earth, which is aligned E-W before curving to SE. Blocked at both ends by collapse, the passage averages .8m wide and is up to .6m high. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 893. In pasture, on the SE side of a ridge, overlooking the valley of the Ardsheelhane River. An opening in the ground allows access into an earth-cut entrance passage (L 2.2m; Wth 0.85m) which slopes down to the SW. A creepway (Wth 0.65m; H 0.45m) at the bottom of this passage leads into a partially waterlogged earth-cut chamber (L c. 2m). A blocked-up construction shaft is visible to the E of the creepway. A second creepway in the E side of Chamber 1 leads into a second inaccessible chamber. A circular depression (diam. c. 0.6m; D c. 0.5m) and an oval depression (1m x 0.55m; D 0.45m) were also noted in the ground, 2m and 5m respectively, to the SW of the present opening to the souterrain. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
