National Monument No. 258. Lislaughtin Abbey situated N of Glashanagalloon stream (Glaise na nGealbhan, stream of the sparrows), and N of the friary lies Ballylongford Creek. This Franciscan house was built by John O'Connor Kerry for the monks of the strict Observantine Rule. It consists of a long house, 29m x 5.2m internally, which is divided into choir and nave. It originally had a square tower over the choir arch. This tower, which was documented by O'Donovan in 1841, fell in the last century. The arches supporting the tower were pointed and constructed of thin flagstones. It measured c 60 feet in height and consisted of four storeys. The nave has two doorways providing access to the interior. The doorway on the W gable, which would have been the main entrance is formed of cut limestone in the pointed style, and stands 1.9m high x 1.4m wide. Over this doorway is a pointed window, originally twin-lighted by a stone mullion which no longer exists. The second doorway lies on the S wall and is c 1.4m from the W gable. Also formed of limestone in the pointed style, it is 1.7m high x .8m wide. In the interior of the nave on the N wall are two tomb niches with ogee-form hoods and towering pinnacles. Other buildings would appear to have extended from the W of the nave, but only the remains of a wall c 22m in length survives. The choir is lighted by a fine E window divided into four lights by stone mullions, which is surmounted by bar tracery. It is 2m wide externally and splays to 2.5m wide internally. It rises to c 3.7m high. The S wall of the choir contains three windows all divided into two by stone mullions. The central window mullion no longer exists. The windows are all pointed and formed of cut limestone, and all are within a rectangular frame. Recessed into the S wall of the choir is a triple sedilia, stone seats which provided seating for the ministers. According to Leask (1960, 166), the sedilia in Lislaughtin are so similar to those at Adare and Askeaton, Co. Limerick, that they could have come from the same mason. On the N wall of the choir is a doorway leading to a long lateral two storey building, 5.4m x 17.2m internally. It is lighted by 30 windows. The refectory was on the ground floor, while the dormitory was above. Immediately NE of this building lies a towerlike structure which would appear to be the garderobe. The transept abuts the S wall of the church and originally it could have been partly to the S to SW of the tower (Mooney 1956, 125-169). According to O'Donovan (1841), the E wall was in line with the W side of the tower. It is 4.7m x c 9.5m internally. The S gable displays a fine pointed window contained within a square frame; it is divided into four lights by stone mullions and is surmounted by bar tracery. This Franciscan friary is believed to be sited on an earlier church (KE003-016003-) dedicated to St Lachtin of Muskeriy, Co. Cork, who died in 622 AD. His feast day is on 19 March. St Lachtin is held in great veneration by the local people, who swear by the hand of St Lachtin. This relic, which is housed in the National Museum in Dublin, dates to the 10th century. John O'Connor Kerry, the father of Conor O'Connor who built nearby Carrigafoyle Castle (KE002-045----), probably started building the abbey in 1470. In May 1477, Pope Sixtus IV gave O'Connor permission to house the Franciscan friars; it took until 1478 for the mandate to reach the prior of Ballinskelligs and for him to grant the licence to the friars to finally occupy the abbey. After the fall of Carrigafoyle Castle in April 1580, Lislaughtin Abbey was destroyed and three aged friars, Fathers Donatus O'Hanrahan, Philip O'Shea and Maurice O'Scallan, were murdered before the high altar. It was not re-occupied until 1629, and by the 1640s/1650s it was again in danger, this time from the Cromwellians who sacked the abbey in 1652. Monks who tried to escape the Cromwellian soldiers were caught in a nearby glen and had their ears cut off: the glen is now called Gleann Cluasach, glen of the ears. Although a list of guardians exist for Lislaughtin up until 1860, the last being John Tuomy, we are not certain when the Franciscans actually abandoned the abbey. The importance of Lislaughtin can also be seen in the fine processional cross (KE003-016002-) which was found in a field near by the abbey in 1871. A Gothic inscription on the upper limbs of, the cross reads: 'Cornelius son of John O'Connor, head of his sept and Eibhlm, daughter of the Knight, caused me to be made at the hands of William O'Connor, A.D. 1479' ( 1983, 181). John O'Connor Kerry, the builder of Lislaughtin, had died in 1478, so this cross was possibly commissioned by his son Connor as a gift to the friary. Between 1841 and 1892 the graveyard appears to have been extended to the S as it is depicted as a larger rectangular shaped graveyard (dims. c. 80m N-S x 65m E-W) on the 1892 ed. OSi 25-inch map with entrance at NE corner and pathway running around the edge of the graveyard. Graveyard described by Toal (1995, no. 965) as follows; 'Lislaughtin Abbey (in ruins) is situated N of Glashanagalloon stream (Glaise na nGealbhan, stream of the sparrows), and N of the friary lies Ballylongford Creek. In 2010 a graveyard survey carried out by Laurence Dunne recorded the following details: 'The Franciscan friary [KE003-016----] overlooks the meandering Ballyline River estuary otherwise known as Ballylongford Creek to north and west. Ballylongford Creek debouches into the River Shannon Mouth at Carrig Island. The Glashanagalloon Stream more or less waters its southern limits where it issues into Ballylongford Creek. The site is located on gently sloping ground with views in all directions locally restricted somewhat due to local topography. Entry into the graveyard and friary is gained through a single modern wrought iron black painted gate at the north-eastern limits of the graveyard. The gate is set between two square piers of limestone that has a substantial cover of ivy. The capping on the piers could not be discerned due to the ivy cover. Boundary walls are up to 1.8m high max. internally (averaging 1.4m), and are constructed with rubble stone built to courses and bedded with a gritty pebbly mortar and capped with ‘soldiers’ and are generally in good condition. However, large areas covered in substantial ivy and repairs are necessary to section mid-way along east boundary wall. Only seventeen tombs were recorded in Lislaughtin in the course of this survey of which ten are named. Seven unnamed tombs (606, 611,631, 636, 641, 646 and 655) were recorded in various states of preservation of which tomb 646 built of ashlar masonry is in very good condition. A total of 580 named and generally modern headstones (HN) were recorded in Lislaughtin graveyard. There were no medieval gravemarkers or inscriptions predating the last decade of the 18th century noted or recorded in the course of this survey. There were 62 unnamed headstones (HWN) in total recorded in the course of this survey. The majority of the unnamed graves mainly comprise unhewn stones although a few are simple iron crosses' (Dunne 2010, 8-11). The NE through E to SE sector has been completely levelled; elsewhere the external height of the bank measures .5m and the internal height .4m. This site is situated in a corner of a field, and a track lies immediately to the E and S of it. At these points the bank has been incorporated into a fieldbank. This enclosure consists of an inner area enclosed by a fosse and an outer bank, but the outer bank can only be traced from the N through W to the SW. The interior is roughly rectangular, although it curves E at the SW corner. It measures internally 52m N-S and 66m E-W. The maximum external height of the enclosing earthen inner bank measures 2m, the width of the bank at the base measures on average 4m (to the W it measures 10m), and the internal height of the bank above the interior measures 1m. N through W to the SW sector there is evidence of a low, wide fosse. Due to the construction of the trackway and fieldbank, it cannot be identified for the rest of the site. The width of the fosse ranges from 3m-5m. The outer earthen bank is low and wide and like the fosse can only be traced from the N through W to SW. The external height of the outer bank measures .8m, the width of the bank at the base on average is 6m, and the internal height of the bank above the fosse c 1m. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and in the SE corner it rises sharply towards the bank. In the E sector, there is a long narrow depression, 22m x 6m. The exterior side to the N through E is steep due to its rising above the stream; the interior is sloping sharply NE. In the E sector of the interior is a depression, 5.4m N-S, 6m E-W. This well is not marked on any editions of the OS maps, but was known locally as 'St Laichtin's Well'. Situation and Description: According to the Folklore Commission of Ireland (1938-39), this was a small dry-walled well, 2ft in diameter. No trace of this well can be seen today. Rounds/Legends/Offerings: A savage bull which prevented people from going to the well was tamed by St Laichtín. Ó Danachair (1958, 160) recorded the following details about this well; '"St Laichtin's Well" - local name. Not on maps. A small well now used for domestic supply and cattle, but still known as a former holy well. Legend: A savage bull which prevented people from going to the well was tamed by the saint'. In 1938 the following folklore about St Laictín and his well collected from Ballylongford School recorded the following tradition; 'Long ago there was a monastery in Lisloughtin and there were many monks there. The chief monk was Saint "Laictín". These monks were called Franciscans because they were called after Saint Francis. The Abbey is now an old ruin covered over with ivy and there are people buried there. Saint "Laichtín" was a very pious man and he was so holy that God granted him a special gift which was in his small finger. He cured several people with his finger and the people came from all parts of Ireland to him to be cured. When the saint died his finger was preserved and it never decayed. After several years the finger was lost and it was never found after. There is a well in the land of Mrs. Sullivan called Saint "Laichtín" well. There was a bull in the field of the well and he killed many people. One day as the Saint and his followers were passing the field the bull came up to him and went down on his knees before him and he never killed anyone after. His feast day falls on the 17th March but it is not honoured now and it is said he lived in the 6th century. There is a holy well called after him in Asdee also. There is a townland called after him named Lisloughtin' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0403, Pages 118-9; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4666583/4663969/4667748?ChapterID=4666583). A second story collected from Ballylongford School recorded the following tradition; 'There is a Well called after him and it is known as "Laichtín's Well". It is in the land of Mrs. Sullivan in the townland of Lislaughtin. It is said that he visited the Well on the 13th May 758 with other followers. There are no rounds paid at the Well because it is not certain whether he visited it or not. The day that he visited the Well there was a bull in the field and he had alot of people killed. The bull walked up to the Saint and knelt down before him and would not touch the Saint and his followers. There was supposed to be a miraculous cure in one of Saint Laichtín's fingers, and all the sick used to come to him to be cured. When St. Laichtín died they kept the finger in the Abbey but it was lost around the 14th century' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0403, Pages 126-7; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4666583/4663977).
