Internal diam. 19.2m N-S, 22.5m E-W This ruined circular caher is located on gently sloping pasture W of Staigue river, overlooking Kenmare Bay to S. It is marked 'Killeen Burial Ground' (KE107-002002-) on both editions of the OS maps. A field wall runs NNW-SSE through the centre of the site, and its S half lies buried beneath field clearance material. The enclosing wall can be traced along the N sector, where it survives only one to two courses high and measures 2.7m wide. It is faced internally and externally by large coursed slabs and appears to have a rubble core. No surface features were identified in the interior of the site. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 606. This site is indicated as a large circular enclosure on the first edition of the OS map, but today resembles the irregular field depicted on the second edition. The wall of this field appears to be modern and no trace survives of the earlier enclosure. It was located in boggy pasture between two branches of the Staigue river. This may be the site near Staigue bridge referred to by Graves as the 'ruins of a stone fort' (1877, 289). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 830. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 18.5m N-S, 17.8m E-W Located in sloping pasture with an excellent outlook over Kenmare Bay, this circular caher is poorly preserved. Its enclosing wall is 2.3m in average width and consists of a ruble core faced internally and externally with drystone masonry. Sections of the internal facing appear to have been rebuilt in modern times. Two concentrations of loose stone occur in the overgrown interior of the site. It is not clear if they represent field clearance or the collapsed remains of internal structures. A souterrain (KE107-005001-) is locally reputed to occur in the site, but its exact location is unknown. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Located c. 100m E of the Staigue river, close to Staigue bridge, this large section of rock outcrop, 13m x 10m, was stripped of three to four feet (c. 1m) of peat in the 1830s (Graves 1877, 284—5). The weathered surface slopes upwards to SE, but most of the decoration occurs on the fairly level S end of the rock, within an area measuring 2.5m x 2m. Flanking both sides of a complex of cup-and-ring motifs and linear grooves in this area are two large rings with an average diameter of .45m; one features a central cupmark while the other encloses four. Most of the remaining ornament is enclosed within a network of grooves and consists of thirteen cup-and-rings, two cup-and-two rings and twenty-two cupmarks. Some of the cupmarks punctuate the ends of grooves. A number of the cup-and-rings feature radial grooves, a few of them terminating in cupmarks. The decoration continues intermittently to N, down the rock's surface, and consists of long curving grooves and cup-and-rings. See attached drawing of rock art taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 68 (c) The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 353. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In mountain heath (55m OD), at an interface between a level area of ground and a N-facing slope. Located on E side of Staigue River valley and surrounded by low hills W->N->SE. A large, L-shaped expanse of smooth and fractured sandstone rock outcrop (dims. 14m N-S; 2.75m E-W; max. H 0.20m) which has deep, natural fissures (long-axis E-W) which have been further weathered. A previous survey recorded numerous motifs across a rectangular decorated surface (dims. 5.70m NNW-SSE; 2.00m ENE-WSW) at S end of this L-shaped rock expanse (O’Sullivan & Sheehan 1996, Fig. 68 (c), 104). These include a large ring motif (overall dims. 44cm x 43cm; ring Wth 1.5-2cm; D 3cm) enclosing four cupmarks (diam. 4-7.5cm; D 2-13mm) at W end and a large cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 46cm; ring Wth 1.5cm; D 3cm) enclosing a relatively small central cup (diam. 6cm; D 13mm), at E end of decorated surface. A complete cup-and-two-ring motif (overall dims. 27cm x 25cm; ring Wth 1.5-2.5cm; D 4-6cm; cup diam. 4.5cm; D 15mm) is located at S end, with a second example adjacent. Seventeen cup-and-ring motifs (overall diam. 12-24cm; ring Wth 1.5-2.5cm; D 3-4cm; cup diam. 4-5cm; D 9-10mm) are located across this decorated surface. Twenty-three cupmarks (range diam. 4-5cm; D 8-9mm), some of which are intersected by and are at the terminus of linear grooves (Wth 1.5cm; D 3-4mm), are distributed across this decorated surface. A large circular depression (dims. 10cm x 11cm; D 6mm) is situated toward the NW-edge. This decorated surface continues northwards, toward the centre of the rock expanse, as mentioned (although not depicted) by O’Sullivan & Sheehan (ibid). These decorative elements comprise of three cup-and-ring motifs, three cupmarks and various linear grooves. The motifs at the northern end, toward the ‘toe’ of this L-shaped rock expanse, have not previously been recorded and may have been exposed since earlier surveys. These consist of eight cup-and-ring motifs (overall diam. 12-18cm; ring Wth 1-2cm; D 4cm; cup diam. 3-4.5cm; D 8-11mm) including a cup-and-ring motif at the extreme N end, which has a radial groove extending from the ring at E. There are two cupmarks upon this decorated surface. Graves recorded an ornamented 'rounded and water-worn' boulder which was built into a fence close to KE107-010---- (1877, 289). The fence has since been removed, and the stone now forms part of a clearance cairn. Its decorated surface is flat and measures 1.1m x .75m. It features a large, irregular cup-and-ring, c. .65m in maximum diameter, and a smaller cup-and-ring. Graves' illustration shows these motifs to have been joined by a groove that was flanked by four cupmarks. Because of a spall on the rock's surface these can no longer be identified. See attached drawing of rock art taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 68(e) The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. In improved pasture (46m OD), on generally level valley floor, c. 30m to E of Staigue river and overlooked by low hills W->N->E. An ex-situ rock art boulder located on the E side of a large stone field clearance mound (H c. 3m). A smooth and fractured sandstone () having a rectangular decorated surface () which is currently E-facing. Motifs are weathered yet traceable and consist of a large cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 65cm NE-SW x 49cm NW-SE; ring Wth 1-1.5cm; D 3cm; cup diam. 5cm; D 7mm). A smaller cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 19cm x 16cm; ring Wth 1-1.5cm; D 2-3cm; cup dims. 2.5cm x 3.5cm; D 4mm) is located 2cm to N and a previously unrecorded cupmark (dims. 4cm x 3cm; D 6mm) is located 7cm to S. Cowlagh/Cabhlach: This ruined house is located in pasture about 750m N of Castlecove, overlooking Kenmare Bay to S. Of rectangular plan, it is built of coursed rubble bonded in a lime and gravel mortar. All of the quoin stones have been removed. It measures 12.85m NW-SE x 7m NE-SW internally and its walls survive to an average external height of 2.25m. Traces of rendering are preserved on the external wall-face. The building has two sets of opposing windows, positioned towards either end of its side-walls, which feature coursed jambs and splayed rubble ingoings. They average at least 1.15m high. The windows positioned at the NW end are .6m wide, while the two at the SE end measure .26m and .45m wide. A pointed doorway is located off-centre on the NE wall. It is formed of an arch of pitched stone above coursed jambs, now partially defaced. Its slightly splayed ingoings retain the socket for a drawbar, and most of its rear arch has fallen. A nib-hole, preserved at the springing of the arch on its SE side, served to secure the wooden centring for raising the rear arch. Almost opposite the doorway is a breach in the SW wall, but the build-up of debris and field clearance material in the interior of the building prevents any determination of its original nature. Three long, rectangular sockets, at least 1.3m high, .3m deep and .4m wide on average, are located towards the NW end of the building, one occurring in each of the side-walls and the third centrally positioned in the NW wall. Their sides are ragged and their upper sections have collapsed. Bland describes the roof of this 'ancient house' as having stood on 'large beams, placed perpendicularly in the wall, the spaces which they occupied still remaining' (1825, 28-9). The building is locally known as a church. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Possible stone circle identified and described by Aoibheann Lambe as follows; 'Set on the grounds of a modern bungalow in an area that is overgrown, it is situated on a rise beyond the garden, with expansive views over the roof of the house at SE to Skehanagh and at SW to Kenmare River. This possible stone circle is located on an overgrown elevated site in the townland of Liss and overlooks Kenmare River to SW. It consists of a circular arrangement of six upright stones and at least 7 more stones, one of which lies prostrate and others which have become obscured by the overgrowth or have been displaced by falling, particularly those on its south side where there is a drop of 1m at the edge of the circle. The level ground of the interior which has a diameter of 6m (6m NS and 6m EW) is overgrown and there are a number of young trees growing in it. The prostrate stone at NE is rectangular in shape and measures 1.25m by 0.6m and is 0.2m thick. At NNE, an upright stone, 1m high, 1.2m across at its widest point and 0.2m thick, tilts forward into the circle. Immediately in front of this is some rubble and a stone shaped like a triangular prism, the side facing the interior of the circle measuring 0.7m across at its base, its surface sloping upwards measuring 0.9m and the top surface 0.5m. Between N to NE, there is a gap c. 3m wide with an embankment, 0.2m high, extending to a field wall 7m to E. At ENE, there are two stones with the one nearest N being 0.45m high, 1.1m long at its base and 0.6m thick. The other is upright, standing 1.15m high, and is 1.5m wide and 0.4m thick. At ESE, a stone measuring 0.5m high on the side facing the circle and 1m on the other side, is 0.8m wide and 0.2m thick. At S, there is a stone 0.2m thick, 1m wide whose interior face is 0.35m high while the exterior face is 1m long. To S, there is a drop of 1m and it is very overgrown. There are at least 4 stones (c. 1m long) on the lower level that may have formed part of the circle. At W, there is a gap between 2 upright stones one 0.75m high, 0.75m wide and 0.4m thick while the other boulder is triangular shaped with the side facing the interior of the circle measuring 1m by 1m by 1m. There are 2 large boulders outside the circle, one 3m SW of this triangular shaped stone and the other a further 4m SW. Neither portals nor an axial stone have been identified'.
