This poorly preserved stone enclosure, not marked on the OS maps, is located on the N facing slope of the ridge that divides Cloonaghlin and Iskanamacteery Loughs. The enclosing bank is composed of stone and earth, and averages .5m high and 1m wide. It encloses an area 13m N-S x 11m E-W, within which is a poorly preserved circular hut (KE090-015001-) measuring 3m N-S x 2.2m E-W internally. Its stone-built wall survives to a height of .8m and is 1.2m wide. Collapse obscures the location of the entrance in both the hut and the site's enclosing bank. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 762. Internal diam. 21.5m This poorly preserved circular caher, containing the remains of a probable hut, is situated on the N slopes of the ridge which separates Loughs Namona and Cloonaghlin from Lough Iskanamacteery. It is not marked on the OS maps. The enclosing wall is reduced to a bank of sod-covered collapse which features traces of roughly constructed drystone facing externally at S. The bank measures 2.5m wide and .8m high. A ruined circular structure, probably a relatively modern sheepfold, overlies a circular enclosure (KE090-016001-) in the interior of the site. The latter measures about 10m in internal diameter, and its enclosing bank averages 1.7m wide and .7m high. An entrance, 1.4m wide, is located at E. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 611. Internal diam. 17.5m N-S, 18.8m E-W This circular caher, not marked on the OS maps, is located in boggy pasture a short distance N of Lough Iskanamacteery. The site is built into the gradient of a slope and the external face of the enclosing element at N is completely obscured. As S it survives as a broad bank, 7.3m wide, of stone collapse. At E and W the wall has an average thickness of 3.2m, and consists of a sod-covered rubble core faced internally and externally with drystone masonry. Here, it has a maximum external height of 1.9m and rises .6m on average above the interior of the site. An entrance, located at SE, is filled with collapse to the level of its single surviving lintel and has been adapted for use as a lamb shelter. A rectangular sheepfold, built on the foundations of a circular hut (KE090-019001-), occupies the N half of the interior of the site. Its traverses the centre of the hut, and its N wall is the rebuilt side of the hut. The S side of the hut survives as a low and indistinct stony bank which gives an internal diameter of 6.9m. Two small dilapidated stone structures occur outside the caher at SE. Circular in plan, they have average internal diameters of 2.5m. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. This monument, located on the S slope of the ridge that runs between Cloonaghlin and Iskanamacteery loughs, was excavated by O'Connell and interpreted as a burial cairn (1937, 119-20; NMI- 'near Cahersiveen'). Before excavation the dimensions of the pear-shaped cairn were recorded as 31 feet (9.44m) x 24 feet (7.31m) and 7 feet (2.13m) high. O'Connell uncovered three 'cists', each of which was capped with lintels. That at S measured 6 feet (1.82m) x 2 feet (.6m) and was 2 feet (.6m) deep, its W end plunging to a depth of 6 feet (1.82m); it contained a fill of stone chips, on which rested bone fragments, identified by O'Connell as human, and two 'sandstone chips, much resembling arrowheads' (O'Connell 1937, 120). It has been suggested that this feature may be a corn-drying kiln (information: C. Manning), and doubt has been cast on the identifications of the bone and stone chips found in it. The two other 'cists' occurred directly to the N; no finds were noted in their stone infills. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
