This complex of walls is located on the SE spur of Macklaun, which forms the N side of the Meelagh river valley. Several lengths of walls, surviving as lines of upright slabs spaced approximately 1m to 2m apart, run along the slope of the ridge. They are enveloped in peat at their lower ends. The walls occupy an area c. 435m x c. 400m. An example of rock art (KE071-053----) occurs at the E end of the system. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 60. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Located on a SE spur of Macklaun mountain, on the N side of the Meelagh river, this section of rock outcrop features a pocked penannular ring with a natural solution pit at one terminal. A scattering of faint pockmarks occurs adjacent to the ring. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 357. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013 In rough mountain pasture (246m), with abundant boulders and rock outcrop, on a general E-facing slope, on the SE spur of Macklaun mountain; Good views all around particularly to NE overlooking the valley of the Owbeg and Meelagh rivers, which join the River Caragh and flow into Caragh Lake; Also good views of MacGillycuddy Reeks to E. Not located. The SMR file indicates that this rock art is ‘approximately 500m SW and behind the farmhouse up a steep cliff and over the fence on the top of a ridge running NW-SE above the farmhouse.’ Field inspection confirms that this fence and ridge described are only c. 100m to SW of the farmhouse mentioned, at the GPS coordinate supplied. O’Sullivan & Sheehan (1996, 106) describe a ‘pocked penannular ring with a natural solution pit at one terminal’. This rock art motif was not seen despite an extensive search in this vicinity. In mountain heath, on SE spur of Macklaun Mountain. Excellent views of surrounding landscape, particularly along valley of Meelagh River to Caragh Lake at NE and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Carrauntoohill to ENE. A slightly rough and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 2.95m ENE-WSW; 2.1m NNW-SSE; H 0.8m at N) which is suboval in plan. It has an irregular decorated surface (dims. 1.1m ENE-WSW; 0.65m NNW-SSE) which has an ENE-facing aspect. The decorated surface bears at least five motifs which are very faint, yet traceable. A suboval ringmark (dims. 17cm ENE-WSW; 20cm NNW-SSE) defined by a ring (Wth 1.5-2cm; 2-3mm) is located at W-end of decorated surface. Two linear grooves are adjacent to E. The closest linear groove (L 9cm; Wth 1.5cm; D 3mm) is c. 3.5cm to E. Occasional pockmarks (average diam. 12mm; D 2mm) occur randomly around the linear grooves. Two cupmarks (diam. 3.5cm; D 4mm) are situated to E-side of decorated surface and a possible cupmark (diam. 3cm; D 2mm) is in NW corner of stone. A field fence is 2.2m to N. A smooth and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 2.05m NNW-SSE; 1.9m ENE-WSW; H 1.2m at S) which is rectangular in plan. It has a roughly rectangular-shaped decorated surface (dims. 0.6m NNW-SSE; 0.9m ENE-WSW) which has an ENE-facing aspect. The decorated surface bears four motifs which are clearly visible. A large, irregular ringmark (dims. 29cm N-S; 26cm E-W) defined by a ring (Wth 1.5cm; 2-3mm) with a narrow gap at NE, is located centrally upon the decorated surface. A large penannular ring (dims. 27cm NE-SW; 22cm NW-SE) is adjacent to E. This motif is open to W, where the space is occupied by a cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 13cm; ring Wth 1.5cm; D 2-3mm; cup diam. 4.5cm; D 4mm). An oval ringmark (dims. 18cm NE-SW; 16cm NW-SE) defined by a ring (Wth 1-1.5cm; D 2-3mm) is to SW. A number of linear and oval solution marks are evident upon this stone’s surface.
