Internal diam. 21.7m N-S, 22.5m E-W Dooneen/An Dúinín: This heavily overgrown circular rath is located on top of a low rise on the SW slopes of Letter South, providing an excellent outlook over Kenmare Bay to S. The enclosing fosse averages 2m wide and falls .3m below external ground level. The bank, composed of earth and stone, rises to an average external height of 2.5m and is up to 3m in basal width. Regularly coursed drystone facing revets its inner flank. This has collapsed in places, but elsewhere it is preserved from .45m to 1m high. It is not clear if the much eroded gap at SE marks the location of the original entrance to the rath. It is locally reputed that there is a souterrain (KE092-005001-) at this site, but no surface trace of it is evident. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 544. This ruined stone enclosure, not marked on the OS maps, is situated close to a stream on a small level shelf on the SW slopes of Letter South mountain. It affords an extensive view along a small river valley to Kenmare Bay at S. It comprises a subcircular area, 10.6m N-S x 11.1m E-W, which is enclosed by a much collapsed drystone wall. The wall is 1.7m wide and .7m high internally but its external face is obscured by collapse and overgrowth. It is constructed of horizontal courses of block-like slabs with intermittent uprights and slabs set on edge. A possible entrance is located at SE, marked on its N side by two uprights. Its S side is severely eroded and ill-defined. The poorly preserved remains of two possible huts are located in the SE sector of the site's interior. The structures measure 3m (KE092-006003-) and 1.7m (KE0092-006004-) internally, and stand to an average height of .3m. This denuded stone enclosure is located in marshy land onthe NE slopes of Knockanaskill, overlooking Kenmare Bay to S. Not marked on the OS maps, the site measures 18.5m N-S x 20m E-W in overall dimensions and the roughly circular enclosing stone wall is much collapsed and overgrown. Stretches of external stone facing can be traced around the W half of the site, and horizontal courses of large flat slabs survive to a height of .4m at NW. The inner wall-face is completely obscured by overgrowth. A gap at SE may indicate the location of the original entrance which is marked on its N side by an upright slab, .75m high. A concentration of stone collapse in the SW quadrant of the interior of the enclosure may represent the remnants of a hut (KE092-015001-). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. A circular enclosure with a circular structure in its interior is marked at this location on the first edition of the OS map. Now levelled, it was located on the high E bank of a small river which flows S to Kenmare Bay. The steep scarp above the river probably formed its W and N sides, while three low mounds of earth and stone may indicate the extent of the enclosing element at SE, giving the site an overall diameter of about 30m. There are two collapsed openings to a stone-built souterrain passage (KE092-016002-) located in its SW quadrant. The opening at S measures .95m wide by .8m high, but the passage is infilled to within .4m of its roof. At least 4.3m long, it is aligned N-S and is roofed by a series of large flat slabs. This may be the site referred to as Knockaunnagoneen/Cnocán an Dúinín(?) or Cnocán na gCoinín in the OSNB, where it is described as a 'fort with a cave in it' (Templeno, 34). Located in an area known as 'Poulacapple', on the lower E slopes of Knockanaskil mountain, this roughly triangular section of outcrop measures 1.7m x 1.2m. Its upper surface lies almost flush with surrounding ground level and was relieved of its covering of earth in 1904 (Lynch 1906b, 311). It features a number of poorly preserved motifs, comprising a cup-and-two rings with a radial groove, a cup-and-ring, a number of isolated cupmarks and various curvilinear and rectilinear outlines formed with grooves, some of which join to form a grid-like pattern. The stone is locally known as the 'Oscar Stone', and is reputed to mark the grave of Oscar, grandson of Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finlay 1973, 91-2). See attached drawing of rock art taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 68(d) The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 358. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In improved pasture (160m OD), on an E-facing slope; Ash tree adjacent to N, tertiary road c. 10m to E and farm buildings are c. 30m to W. Overlooking forestry and small valley to E and overlooked by higher ground to W. A smooth and fractured, earthfast sandstone (dims. 1.20m N-S; 1.65m N-S; max. H 0.20m at W) having a flat, subrectangular surface (dims. 1.15m N-S; 0.90m E-W) bearing numerous weathered motifs which are obscured by moss along perimeter to N and across eastern half; Sod and grass also cover SW corner of stone. A cup-and-two-ring motif (overall diam. 30cm; ring Wth 2-3cm; D 3cm) is located upon S side of decorated surface, having a very weathered cupmark (cup diam. 10cm; D 3mm). A cupmark (diam. 5cm; D 6mm) is adjacent to N, having a long curvilinear groove (Wth 1.5cm; D 3-4mm) extending from cupmark at SE. A D-shaped ring (overall dims. 21cm NW-SE; 18cm NE-SW; ring Wth 1.5cm; D 3-4mm) is located to N; A cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 16cm; ring Wth 2-3cm; D 4-5cm; cup diam. 6cm; D 7mm) is conjoined by a short groove at NE. A number of intersecting linear grooves (under moss) are forming a grid like pattern across northern area of decorated surface. A second D-shaped ring (overall dims. 15cm N-S; 24cm E-W; ring Wth 3-6cm; D 3mm) is located (under moss) to E of the cup-and-two-ring motif and has a modern chiselled appearance. Rough pickmarks (diam. 5-10mm) are randomly dispersed across decorated surface, particularly upon W half of stone and may be modern chiselled marks. A very rough oval area of pickmarks (overall dims. 19cm N-S; 10cm E-W; ring Wth 1.5cm; D 4mm) at extreme SW of decorated surface, also have a modern appearance. According to (Lynch 1906, 312), these markings are associated with 19th century forge activity where local information refers to workmen from preparing their tools upon the stone surface (Lynch 1906, 312). A rounded earthfast boulder (dims. 0.90m N-S; 1.40m E-W; max. H 0.50m) abuts the rock art site (KE092-037----) to W. It has a number of markings upon its NW surface, which seem modern and some appear to be an attempt to imitate the rock art (KE092-037----). These decorative elements consist of two cupmark (diam. 6cm; D 5mm) type motifs and a curvilinear groove (L 17cm; Wth 5cm; D 5mm). Lynch (RSAI 1906, 311-13) stated there was a forge on this farm in the 1840s and random markings upon the rock art stone (KE092-037----) and the adjacent boulder may be a result of workmen preparing/sharpening tools. The cupmarks upon this stone appear different from the usual type and have a more chiselled appearance, therefore this stone may have been ‘decorated’ at times during the 19th century when the forge was in operation. An ash tree abuts this boulder to N and forms a visible marker to identify both stones. This D-shaped enclosure, not marked on the OS maps, is located in rough pasture on a steep, SW facing slope of Letter South mountain. The site affords fine views over Kenmare Bay and the Beara Peninsula to S. The enclosing wall, .75m high externally, is composed of irregular courses of drystone masonry flanked intermittently by uprights and slabs set on edge. The wall is .7m wide and there is no clear evidence of an entrance. The area enclosed measures 12.4m internally. In the S half of the interior, two semicircular arcs of drystone walling indicate the remnants of two huts. That at SE (KE092-044001-) is much collapsed and overgrown. Its coursed walling survives to a maximum height of .4m, and it has an overall diameter of 4m. The second structure, at SW (KE092-044002-) has an internal diameter of 2m and its regularly coursed wall survives .3m high. A semicircular enclosure (KE092-044003-), 6.3m in diameter, abuts the site externally at W. Its wall is largely collapsed and is formed mainly of upright slabs which average .5m high. The location of this souterrain, on the lower SE slopes of Knockanaskill mountain overlooking Kenmare Bay to S, is marked by an area of dense overgrowth. The souterrain was accessible within living memory and reputedly consisted of three stone-built chambers roofed with slabs (local information). Some of the lintels were removed in recent years and a 4.1m long depression, aligned N-S, may mark the location of a chamber or passage. A lintel, 1.7m long, remains in situ at one end of this depression. This site is not marked on the OS maps. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
