In woodland, straddling the N end of a flat-topped ridge, c. 400m SSW of the confluence of the Slaheny and Roughty Rivers. An overgrown circular area (34m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by the faint remains of an earthen bank (int. H 0.15m) SSE-SW and by a scarp (H 2.2m) SW-SSE. An external fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.4m) is evident SE-NW. There is a causeway entrance at S. An E-W earthen field boundary crosses the N sector of the interior while a N-S field boundary crosses the E sector. Another N-S field boundary is immediately W of the fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In Slaheny Wood, on a spur of level pasture, c. 200m SW of a bend in the Slaheny River. A densely overgrown, roughly circular area (22.5m N-S; 20.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1m). A fosse (Wth 1.8m) is evident outside the scarp SW-WNW, elsewhere the ground falls away steeply from the base of the scarp to the valley below. The remains of a bank (Wth 10.7m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.55m), an intervening fosse and a low outer bank (int. H 1m) are evident SW-W. The interior is level. The ground slopes down steeply from the rath on all sides except at W where the entrance is situated. A recent N-S field boundary immediately to the W of the rath may have truncated the fosses and banks along the W arc. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In pasture, on the W side of the valley of the Slaheny River. An unenclosed elevated area (10.5m SE-NW; 10m NE-SW; H 0.75m) with a projection (4m NE-SW; 3.5m NW-SE) on its NE side, giving it an L-shaped plan. The interior of the burial ground is stony while the perimeter consists mainly of earth with some stone. A small number of uninscribed upright grave-markers (H 0.3m) were noted in the interior. A small uninscribed boulder rests on the ground in the centre of the burial ground. A grass-covered mound (H 0.8m) is situated in the NE projection. The area is known locally as 'the cillíneach'. According to local information, the burial ground has not been used in living memory. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. The coordinates provided for this record refer to the area named 'Site of Callan Battlefield' recorded on the OS 1st ed. 6-inch map (surveyed 1841): it was named 'Callan Battlefield (Site of)' on subsequent surveys and revsions. The source of this location may be ascribed to John O'Donovan who identified the site as the English Callann, ‘about five miles eastward of Kenmare, in the parish of Kilgarvan, in the barony of Glenarough, and county of Kerry’ (AFM iii, 382, fn. u). All subsequent commentators have followed this interpretation. An assessment of the evidence does not confirm the OS position as the precise location where the battle was fought and elucidation of its true location must await further investigation. The battle was fought on 24 July 1261 when septs of the McCarthy Mors defeated John Fitz-Thomas of the Geraldines. This battle was the first real defeat of the Anglo-Normans and, as a consequence, south Munster effectively was free of invasion for the next three hundred years (Casey 2000, 20). On the W side of a road c. 100m NW of the site of Callan battlefield (KE094-017----), on a N-facing slope overlooking the valley of the Slaheny River. A roughly oval stone (2.55m N-S; 1.4m E-W), lying flat on the ground, is reputed to mark the burial place of 'Donal Chieftain of the McCarthy Fineens' who died during the battle in August 1261. The stone lies within a small rectangular area enclosed by a stone wall. A modern plaque on the W enclosing wall commemorates Donal McCarthy Fineen though Casey (2000, 20), while accepting that a McCarthy chieftain and perhaps others were buried here, states that the burial could not have been a McFinneen, as this particular McCarthy sept did not exist at the time of the Battle of Callan. The bridge has been extensively reinforced using concrete which masks much of the structural detail, especially on the upstream (S) side. On the downstream (N) side a few roughly shaped voussoirs are visible around the smaller W arch. Also on this side are a pair of buttresses of rough ashlar which flank the main arch. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
