This site is located on the SW spur of Knag hill, overlooking Lough Currane to E and Ballinskelligs Bay to W. The weathered decoration occurs on two horizontal surfaces of a large section of rock outcrop, which falls almost vertically at W. The larger surface bears three cup-and-two rings, the outer rings in each case being gapped, one cup-and-ring, and four cupmarks, one with a radial groove. The second surface features two cup-and-rings, three cupmarks, and two linear grooves. One of the cup-and-rings has the arc of a second ring, which terminates at one end with a cupmark. Finlay recorded another decorated surface 40m to the W of this which featured a cup-and-ring, partly enclosed in a Y-shaped figure formed by grooves, a cupmark with radial groove, and a short straight groove (1973, 61-2; Fig. 72). 5m to S was a lightly picked square. Neither of these surfaces can now be identified. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 363. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013 In rough mountain heath (86m OD), upon an exposed rocky crag, on a W-facing slope; Excellent views of Lough Currane to SE and Ballinskelligs Bay to SW. A very rough and fractured area of rock outcrop (dims. 4.60m NNW-SSE; 4.10m WSW-ENE; max. H 2.50m at W) which has a W-facing cliff-edge. The motifs are situated upon two areas of rock (dims. 2.20m NNW-SSE; 3.80m WSW-ENE) which are separated by a sod-filled crevice. The motifs are extremely weathered, being further obscured by natural fissures (c. long-axis E-W) which are becoming quite deep (D 4-5mm) upon W side. The main decorated surface is upon a relatively flat area of rock outcrop and bears a large cup-and-two-ring motif (overall diam. 57cm; ring Wth 2-2.5cm; D 3-4cm; cup diam. 17cm; D 17mm) at SE side of decorated surface; outer ring is very weathered and difficult to trace. A cupmark (diam. 8cm; D 8mm) adjacent to NW has a radial groove (L 29cm) extending from E side. A cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 31cm; ring Wth 2.5cm; D 3cm; cup diam. 20cm; D 14mm) is upon N side of decorated surface. A cup-and-two-ring motif (overall diam. 28cm; ring Wth 2cm; D 3cm; cup diam. 10cm; D 9mm) is adjacent to W; Outer ring is difficult to trace due to weathering. Cupmarks (range diam. 8-10cm; D 13-15mm) to W. A previously unrecorded, shallow cupmark (diam. 14cm; D 7mm) is located 1.16m to ENE of aforementioned cup-and-ring motif and is on a gentle NE-facing surface. Sod has been removed from this area in relatively recent times and there is no lichen growth. A ledge (H 5cm) separates this cupmark from the main decorated surface. The second decorated surface is located 1.55m to NW and is separated from the main decorated surface by a deep crevice filled with sod and grass. There are two cupmarks (diam. 4.5-5cm; D 1cm) situated upon either side of a cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 23cm; ring Wth 2.5cm; D 3-4cm; cup diam. 9cm; D 2mm). The cupmarks have possibly been deepened by erosion due to the exposed location. There is a partial outer ring NW->N->ESE which is very difficult to trace. A third cupmark (diam. 7cm; D 2cm) is partially covered in sod, adjacent to N. Only part of the NW decorated rock surface is visible, as sod and furze obscure the N side of the decorated surface. This masks a cup-and-ring motif, a linear groove and a cupmark depicted by O’Sullivan & Sheehan (1996, 107: Fig. 71). Internal diam. 25m N-S, 22m E-W Caherhone: An oval enclosure is marked on the first edition of the OS map at this location, and on the second edition this is annotated 'remains of'. It is recorded as 'Cathair Chon' in the OSNB (Drummod, 4). The site survives as a severely disturbed and much modified caher. Its interior is largely obscured by a fill of field clearance material, and it has been used as a rubbish dump. The enclosing wall has been rebuilt in places, and it is now sharply angled at SE and SW. The external height of the surviving stretches of the enclosing element averages 1.2m. Its inner face cannot now be traced except for a possible stretch at N, where the wall is 3m wide. The wall appears to consist of a rubble core faced externally and internally with irregularly shaped slabs and boulders set in rough courses. A number of upright slabs in the N half of the interior may relate to the site's use as a ceallúnach (KE098-005001-) (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. The better preserved SE face bears a grooved Latin cross with broad triangular expansions at its terminals. A similar, though smaller, cross occurs on the other face. Internal diam. 16.5m N-S, 16m E-W Located on the crest of a low ridge that overlooks Lough Currane to SE, this circular caher is poorly preserved. A large amount of field clearance material has been dumped against and on top of its enclosing element, obscuring it in part. The wall averages 2.7m wide, but with clearance material and overgrowth it is now up to 6m wide in places. It has an average internal height of .5m, an external height of 1.6m and consists of inner and outer drystone facing enclosing a rubble core. The entrance to the site is not apparent, and dense vegetation conceals much of its interior. The possible foundations of a circular hut, 4m in overall diameter, are located in its SW quadrant. An opening to a souterrain (KE098-009002-), .7m x .6m, is located in the NW quadrant of the site. This gives access to the N end of a N-S aligned passage which is 3.3m long. Measuring .8m wide and .8m high, its sides are of earth and it is roofed with stone slabs. At its S end is a lintelled creepway, .5m x .3m, which leads into the second passage. The latter is aligned NNE-SSW and is 4.7m long. Measuring 1.3m high and .5m wide, it is of similar construction to the first passage. At its SSW end is a lintelled creepway, .5m x .3m, which gives access to a third passage. Now inaccessible, this is aligned E-W and is c. 3m long. Its side-walls are of coursed drystone masonry, with intermittent upright slabs, and it is roofed with slabs. O'Connell gained access to the souterrain through an opening in the E end of this passage (OPW, 1937). This opening was located in the 'SE outer wall' of the caher, and is now concealed by field clearance material. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Date of upload: 28 July 2013 In rough mountain heath (78m OD) with areas of rock outcrop, on a W-facing slope; Excellent views of Ballinskelligs Bay to SW and Lough Currane to SE. A very rough and fractured sandstone outcrop (dims. 4.1m NE-SW; 2.40m NW-SE; max. H 0.90m at W) having a flat, rectangular decorated surface (dims. 1.20m N-S; 1.50m E-W) bearing very weathered motifs confined to NE area of stone. A cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 29cm x 24cm; ring Wth 1-2.5cm; D 2-3cm; cup diam. 11cm; D 17mm) is at N margin of decorated surface. An obvious cupmark (diam. 6cm; D 7mm) is further to E and a very weathered cupmark (diam. 5cm; D 4mm) at W is very difficult to trace. A Y-shaped groove (Wth 2-3cm; D 3-4mm) is difficult to follow due to weathering: A curvilinear groove (overall L 112cm) defines the E portion (being very difficult to see due to weathering) and a stepped groove (overall dims. 80cm N-S; 20cm E-W) defines the W portion. Date of upload: 28 July 2013 In rough mountain heath (80m OD), on a W-facing slope; Excellent views of Ballinskelligs Bay to SW and Lough Currane to SE. Not seen. There was ‘a lightly picked square’ recorded upon an outcrop 5m to S of rock art site (KE098-136----) by Finlay (O’Sullivan & Sheehan 1996, 106). There is extremely weathered rock outcrop at this location which is obscured by sod, moss and furze. It is feasible that subtle motifs may be present beneath this vegetation, although limited investigation proved negative.
