This promontory fort is marked on the OS maps as 'Cahercarbery (More)', Cathair Cairbre (mór), stone fort of Cairbre. About half a mile S lies another promontory fort, 'Cahercarbery (Beg)'. Cahercarbery (More) consists of a series of three banks, the inner two constructed of stone; small hut sites would appear to have been constructed within the stone wall. Two fosses are to be noted and a causeway leads into the interior from the E. The internal diameter E-W measures 80m, while the external diameter measures 95m. The length of the stone wall measures c90m. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. The Red Ditch. The possible starting point of this earthwork is situated N of Cahercarbery (More) promontory fort (KE013-001----). It is marked on the 1840-41 and 1916 OS maps as 'Track of Red Ditch'. It is better known as the 'Claí Rua', phonetically called 'Cleeroo'. Many accounts have been written on the Claí Rua, but though there are few precise details, a number of traditional accounts survive. This linear earthwork would appear to have been first noticed by Smith in 1756. It can be traced running up Triskmore Mountain in a NW-SE direction (section 1 on drawing). It then disappears for some 3700m before re-appearing on the E summit of Maulin Mountain, where it can again be traced. It is also marked on OS 6-inch map 14. It runs through the N sector of the townlands of Dromatoor, Doonamontane, Knockane and Dirtane (section 2 on drawing). From this point it is difficult to trace. According to Smith (1756), the ditch runs towards the Cashen river, re-appears at the other side, crosses Knockanure Mountain and continues into Co. Limerick. Westropp (1909) attests to its forming the S mear of Glenlea and continuing in a SE direction by an old path in Booleenshare. Beyond this there is a concentration of ringforts. Possibly the earthwork is connected in some way to this concentration and might even have been the cause of the build-up of ringforts at this location. Both Smith and Westropp state that the Claí Rua runs into Co. Limerick and may be connected with the Claí Dubh na Rátha (the black ditch of the rath) near Charleville, Co. Cork. Today, the Claí Rua survives as a shallow ditch with a low bank to the SW. The bank is 1.7m wide and .4m high. The ditch, which was originally flat bottomed, is .7m wide and .3m below the surrounding land. It is difficult to ascertain the function of these linear earthworks as very little work has been done on them to date. The most well known earthwork of this type is the Black Pig's Dyke, the ancient boundary fortification of the Ulaidh in Ulster. The Claí Rua could have had more than one function and according to O'Conchuir (1987), this linear earthwork may represent the limit of the Uí Bhriain advance against their Irish neighbours, perhaps the Ciarraighe. According to local people, the Claí Rua was a roadway which was used by the peasantry to bring their produce to the markets in Co. Limerick. The above description is derived from C. This site is not marked on the 1840-41 map. 'Cave' is marked on the later 1916 edition. A fieldbank cuts through this site in a NW-SE direction. On the N side of the fieldbank, a large stone covers the entrance to the souterrain system. According to local people, the chambers are high enough to stand erect. In the field NE of this souterrain system are many mounds which are supposedly connected to it. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Internal diameter could not be taken This univallate cahir, which lies SE of KE013-019----, is clearly marked on the 1841-42 OS map. On the later edition map of 1916 it has been very much levelled and only a tiny portion survives. Today only a segment of the cahir survives. The enclosing stone bank is still visible N to E, where it is very low, measuring 2m-4m wide at the base and rising to .4m high. In the surviving interior, in the NE sector, is a large raised mound, 6m N-S, 5m E-W and c 1m high. NW of this is a small mound, 2m N-S, 3m E-W and .8m high. The above description is derived from C. The Minute Book of the Co. Kerry Field Club (Vol. 1, 30-1) records that 'some boys told the party that this was locally reputed to be an old graveyard and on investigation the party found several large slabs of sandstone lying among the bracken and undergrowth outside as if they had been thrown there hap-hazard, also over the fence they discovered two slabs of sandstone chipped into a circular shape and each about 2 feet in diameter.' This site is marked on the 1840-41 OS map as a sub- rectangular enclosure; on the later edition of 1916 the S side has been cut by a fieldbank running NE- SW. 'Cave' is marked on the 1916 map. Possible promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; ‘A 200m long north-facing headland 90m wide at the neck narrows to 45m at the northern point. Some 90m from the northern extremity are the possible remains of a stone and earthen bank and external fosse running half way across the headland. A lesser bank runs parallel to this 11m further inland. These may be the remains of artificial defences but not enough remains to ascertain their true nature. A series of six parallel wide banks and intervening ditches run across the remainder of the headland on the landward side. It is unclear whether or not these area natural features or a complex of levelled defences. The sea is accessible with difficulty from within and the area is one of coarse grazing with the thin soil cover rapidly eroding’ (Casey 2002, 72, no. FF).
