On a gentle SW-facing tillage slope. Shown on the 1st ed. (1839) of the OS 6-inch map as a substantial rectangular enclosure (est. c. 55m N-S; c. 45m E-W) defined by a bank with an external fosse. According to Omurethi (1896, 193-4), it was levelled for top-dressing a holding c. 1890 during which, '… in the north-eastern corner of the rampart [the leveller] came across an unflagged chamber, full of black barley and ashes, of which he drew away twenty-seven cartloads, and used it as manure. To the astonishment of his neighbours no ill effects to him or his have resulted’. Visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP ASU 83 (1967) and BOC 60 (1973)) as the cropmark of a broad fosse enclosing a rectangular area. No visible surface trace survives. On a hilltop with panoramic views over mixed pasture and tillage. While, traditionally, the site of a battle between the Leinstermen and the Munstermen in the second century AD, there are no documentary references to Ardscull before the coming of the Normans, after which it’s likely that Ardscull became a borough (KD035-010002-) of some importance (Bradley et al. 1986 Vol. I, 23-4). Further, there are no specific medieval references to this imposing earthwork; the first clear reference not occurring until 1654 when the Book of General Orders noted a request from the inhabitants of Co. Kildare for the State to contribute £30 “towards the finishing of a Fort that they have built at the Mote of Ardscull (op. cit. 27). A substantial tree-clad, oval-shaped, earthen mound, the upper surface of which, enclosed by a bank, has been extensively dug out (possibly as a result of the construction of the 17th-century ‘Fort’) and the base of which is girdled by a narrow shallow fosse (base Wth 2m; D 1m) - infilled between ENE and ESE – and a denuded outer bank (H 0.5m at N – 2.3m at S), outside of which a later lane and road run E-S-W (base diams. 122m E-W; 98m N-S; surface diams. base of bank to base of bank 33m E-W; 33m N-S; diams. crest of bank to crest of bank 62m E-W; 46.5m N-S; H above outer ground level to top of bank at N c.8m; at E c.11m; at S c.9m; at W c.10m). At W, a gap (Wth 2m) in the outer bank leads to a ramped causeway (base Wth 8.5m; surface Wth 1.9m) which crosses the fosse and leads up to a gap (Wth 3m) in the bank and the summit of the mound. OMURETHI (1896, 190-91) reproduces Beaufort’s 1789 plan of the monument in which he recorded rectangular structures in the NW and SW sectors of the summit, and “either a well or an entrance to a cave” in the SE sector. Two adjoining shallow rectangular depressions (L 7m NE-SW; Wth 5m; D 0.1-0.3m) in the NW sector may be the remains of Beaufort’s structures, but the other features he recorded are no longer clearly identifiable. At the N foot of the mound a cresentic area (c. 31m E-W; c12 m N-S) is defined by a low curving bank (int. H 0.5m; Wth 3.7m; ext. H 1.6m). It may be a type of outwork, but its dimensions appear to be too small for it to have been a bailey. A 1967 aerial photograph (CUCAP ASU 79) shows an E-W curving arc defined by a scarp some 50m N of the monument (the line of which was followed by a now levelled field boundary shown on the OS 6-inch mapping) which may be the remains of a bailey? In Ardscull Graveyard (KD035-012004-) which lies near the centre of a very large, but levelled, multivallate early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD035-012002-). The historically attested to borough of Ardscull (KD035-010002-/KD035-012003-) may have been located in the vicinity of the church. According to Bradley et al. (1986a, Vol. I, 29), the first recorded reference to the church of Ardscull occurs in a list of the deaneries of the diocese of Dublin, probably dating to the later 1270’s, in which the church was noted as belonging to the common fund of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. While the same situation obtained in 1294, by the 16th-century Ardscull was recorded as a chapel of the mother-church of Moone (op. cit.). No visible surface trace of the church survives. In level mixed tillage and pasture. Visible on a series of aerial photographs (CUCAP AYL 75 and 78 (1969); BDH 70 (1970); BOC 56 9 (1973) and GB90.BC.07 and 08 (1990)) as the cropmarks of the fosses of two widely spaced and partly concentric circular enclosures (est. max. diam. c. 240m), with possible entrance gaps at W, surrounding Ardscull church (KD035-012001-) and graveyard (KD035-012004-). Also visible (GB90.BC.07) are cropmarks of five small rectilinear enclosures and a trackway extending beyond the curvilinear components, suggesting an associated field system. Near the top of a short gentle E-facing slope, in tillage, near the centre of a very large but levelled early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD035-012—2-). Shown on the 1st ed. (1839) of the OS 6-inch map as a triangular area (est. c. 40m E-W; est. max. c. 30m N-S), but recorded as circular on the current ed. (1939) of the map. A raised area (diam. 40m; H 2.5m) is enclosed by a modern stone wall, with access steps at NW. The interior is very uneven underfoot and rises to a level rectangular area (18m E-W; 12m N-S) which may be the location of the levelled Ardscull church (KD035-012001-). Marked burials are concentrated in the S-half of the graveyard and the earliest noted date to the 18th-century. The medieval borough of Ardscull (KD035-012003-) may have been located in the vicinity of this church and graveyard.
