Spanning the N-flowing River Liffey. According to the owner, Mr. Richard Cane (1920, 56) a bridge was reputedly built here by John le Decer, Mayor of Dublin, in 1308. Sherlock (1909-11, 293-305) described it as having four arches, the two outer rounded, the two inner pointed, with wattle imprints visible on the undersides, and carrying a narrow roadway (Wth c. 2.8m). According to a 1985 Foras Forbatha report (SMR file) the bridge was replaced by a three-arched facsimile with cutwaters and refuges, built of concrete faced with stone [named 'New Bridge' on latest ed. (1939) of the OS 6-inch map]. Sherlock (op. cit.) also comments 'The ancient ford (KD011-039----) was somewhat below the bridge'. In 1995, an underwater archaeological survey (Keeley 1986, 10: Excavation licence no. 95E0178) identified a pier and stone paving from the original bridge below the central arch of the present bridge.
