The monument is named 'Rath' and shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular area (est. diam c. 40m). In 1972, it was described as a roughly oval platform-type ringfort (int. diams. 50m E-W; 27m N-S) built on a slight rise, with no trace of a bank or fosse. According to Comerford (1886, 78) this is the site of the 'cell' of St Farnan, a 6th century saint, and a holy well (KD013-009-) dedicated to St. Farnan lies c. 450m to the WSW. Tickell (1960, 408) records a reference to the later, medieval parish church (KD013-008002-) of Downings here, in a Royal Grant of 1627 to Sir Maurice Eustace. The monuments lie on the crest of a short, low, N-facing pasture slope, overlooking an extensive tract of bog to the N, and comprise; a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD013-008001-) which contains a medieval parish church (KD013-008002-), a graveyard (KD013-008003-), a cross-inscribed stone (KD013-008004-), a fragment of a baptismal font (KD013-008005-), and the unlocated saints cell (KD013-008006-). A ringfort lies c. 200m to the E (KD013-007----). A large D-shaped area (int. diam. c. 88m NE-SW) with a straight NW side (L c. 75m) is defined by a low, inner earthen bank (dims. Wth 4-5m; int. H 0.4-0.7m; ext. H 0.4-1.3m at S) SW-N-SE, and elsewhere by a low scarp (H 0.9m) whose external face is retained by a modern stone wall (av. H 1.2m; T 0.4m) which also retains the external face of the enclosing bank at E but which runs outside the bank along the S and on top of the bank along the N. Stands on a slight rise to S of centre in possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD013-008001-). A poorly preserved, ivy-clad, rectangular structure (int. dims. traceable L 15.5m E-W; Wth 4.85m; wall T 0.85m) is built of randomly coursed limestone blocks. A partly robbed-out doorway (Wth 1.6m) near the surviving W end of the S wall is matched by a section of robbed-out wall (Wth 2.2m) in the N wall opposite which may have contained a second, opposing doorway. The W gable wall is gone and the E gable contains a large, partially robbed-out window embrasure above which the inner face of the gable is set-back (D c. 0.2m) c. 1m below the apex. There is a second, blocked-up window embrasure towards the E end of the S wall. There is a small wall-cupboard at the S end of the E wall and a second, similar cupboard just W of the doorway in the S wall. Opposing vertical joint lines, and different masonry styles, near the E ends of the N and S walls suggest that the E gable end may have been rebuilt. The interior is covered with gravel chippings laid on polythene sheeting and contains a cross-inscribed headstone (KD013-008004-) and a fragment of a baptismal font (KD013-008005-). The OSL (Herity 2002, 38) record, '… St Farannan's (sic) well, where stations were formerly performed on the 12th of June (some say July). Farannan is considered the Patron-Saint' . According to Jackson (1979-80, 148) various cures were said to have been obtained there, and anyone drinking the water would loose the desire for intoxicating liquor. The well was located on level pasture c. 100m S of a broad expanse of bog and c. 450m WSW of the traditional site of St Farnan's monastery (KD013-008----). Near the bottom of a short, gentle, N-facing pasture slope. A very poorly preserved, D-shaped area (diam. c. 50m E-W) with a straight W side (L c. 40m) is defined by a low scarp (H 0.4-0.8m) SE-N-E, and elsewhere by a short arc of low, intermittently gapped, earthen bank (Wth 4m; int H 0.4m; ext H 0.8m), and by a shallow, outer fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m) NE-E-SE. Degraded opposing gaps (Wth 2m) at N and S may be modern. The present W limits are truncated to accommodate a boithrín and farm buildings immediately outside to the SW and W which are shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.8m). The interior is heavily poached by livestock and deeply rutted by the passage of vehicles which has created a track NE-SW across the site.
