The rectory of Herbertstown which was one of several properties surrendered to the Crown in 1580 by Nicholas White, master of the rolls, including; 'the site of the priory of the B.V.M. of Connall (KD023-016----), co. Kildare, lands of Great Connall, Old Connall, Lowestowne, Clonings, Oldeton, Walsheston, Ballymanny, and Little Marisheton, the rectories of Great Connall, Laditon (KD023-002----), Lowistowne (KD023-013----), Harberteston, Dowdingestowne, Clonings, Walsheston, and Oldton' (Nicholls 1994, 508). In 1552 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries the estate of the priory of the B.V.M. of Connall (KD023-016----) including the rectory of Herbertstown was leased by the Crown for 21 years to Edward Randolf (Nicholls 1994, 208). Rectory located in the parish of Ladytown which today consist of a simple rectangular, ivy clad structure (int dims. 8.9m E-W; 4.7m N-S) built of roughly coursed limestone rubble (wall T 0.8m). The central and S half of the E gable wall along with the adjoining SE angle has collapsed, while the rest of the walls survive standing to full height. There are two opposed doorways in the N and S walls towards the W end, with two-centred external arches and flat-headed rear arches, The doorway in the S wall has a shallow, roofless porch. Inside the doorway there is evidence of drawbar slots in the embrasure of both doorways. There is a plain lintelled slit ope or window in the W wall, and similar opposed opes or windows in the N and S walls located off centre to E. There is a small flat-headed wall cupboard or aumbry in SW angle of church. A row of corbels which supported a wooden floor inside W end of church are visible along internal face of W gable at first floor level. The presence of the corbels suggests that there was a two storey priests residence at W end of church. There is also evidence of holes in the W end of the N and S walls which appear to have supported some form of wooden structure in the ground floor of the priests residence. There is evidence of well preserved internal lime plaster on inner face of the W wall of the church. Some years ago two medieval fonts (KD023-018002-/018004-) were removed from the church and are now on display in the graveyard of nearby St. Peters R. C. Church (KD024-066----/067----) (Gibson 1990, 60). Medieval church ruins described by Harold Leask in 1938 as following; ‘the remains, which stand in a graveyard not enclosed from the fields, are those of a small, very plain church, about 35 feet [10.6m] by 21 feet [6.4m] in external dimensions. Its walls are 2 feet 9 inches [0.85m] thick and are built in rough flag-like masonry. The east wall and south east quoin are ruined to the foundations. There are two doorway opposite to one another in the south and north walls and traces of a shallow porch to the former. The doorways have rough arches and the other openings; windows in the west, north and south walls are simple loops with lintelled heads. The building is otherwise featureless’ (H.G. On a very slight rise in generally open mixed tillage and pasture. They ivy-covered ruins of Herbertstown Church (KD023-018----) stands in centre of a rectangular shaped graveyard. On the first ed. OS 6-inch map the church is shown standing in E quadrant of L-shaped graveyard with burial ground to W and N of church. Today the graveyard consists of an overgrown, roughly rectangular-shaped area (c. 33m N-S; c. 25m E-W) enclosed by wooden fencing with no visible grave markers. According to local information, skeletal remains can often be seen in upcast soil from rabbit burrows surrounding the church (pers. comm. Paddy Coleman 18/04/2019). A square-shaped granite baptismal font (dims. L 0.53m; Wth 0.55m; H 0.19m) with a circular basin (top diam. 0.4m; base diam. 0.32m; D 0.14m) and central drain-hole (0.04m) with moulding (H 0.05m; diam. 0.42m; T 0.02m) running around base of font which sat on top of a circular column (diam. 0.38m) now lost. Removed from Herbertstown Church (KD023-018----) some time before 1990 by local parishioners and placed in the grounds of St. Peter’s R. C. Church, Two-Mile-House (Gibson 1990, 60). Cropmark of large square-shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 107m NE-SW x 110m NW-SE) immediately W of Herbertstown Church (KD023-018001-) and graveyard (KD023-018002-) is clearly visible on Google Earth aerial imagery taken 28/06/2018. The enclosing element of the enclosure on the S side is not visible on Google Earth aerial imagery. Traces of linear field boundaries can be seen running off NW side, the antiquity of these field boundaries is uncertain and they may be the remains of post-1700 field boundaries. According to local information the field adjacent to the cropmark was known locally as the 'Castle Field' (pers. comm. Paddy Coleman, 18/04/2019). This feature may be the remains of an enclosure belonging to Herbertstown Castle which is mentioned in 1584/5 when a Crown Inquisition found that the prior of Great Connall abbey (KD026-003---) 'had an annual rent of 10s. arising from the lands and tenements which were held in fee by Edmond Goulding, late of Harberteston, viz., a castle, 6 messuages, 6 gardens, 120 acres of arable land, 4 of meadow, 100 of pasture and moor, and a great warren in Herberteston annual value, £8; also 60 acres of arable land in Knocksellet [Silliothill], annual value, 60s.; 7 gardens in Dowdingeston, annual value,3s.6d.; and an annual chief rent of 2s. out of the ancient town of Killussie [Killashee], all held from the crown' (Archdall 1876, 266; Comerford 1883 vol.2, 292). In 1623 an inquisition into the estate of John Goulding recorded that his estate consisted of a castle in Herbertstown with 100 acres arable along with lands in Silliothill (Cal. inq. post mortem, 42 Car. I). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Kildare recorded that there is 'upon the lands of Herbertstowne one Castle wch. is valued to be worth thirty pounds sterl.' (Simington 1952, 131). This survey recorded that 'Jeofry ffay of Herbertstowne' who is listed as 'Irish Papist' and owner of the lands of Herbertstown (ibid.). A large bowl shaped stone (ext. diam. 0.64m; rim T 0.1m; H 0.36m) with circular basin (top diam. 0.44m; base diam. 0.17m; D 0.21m) and no drainage hole may represent the remains of an early medieval font. It is too large to represent the remains of a medieval water stoup and not the right shape for a bullaun stone. It is possible that this plain unperforated bowl shaped stone was used as a medieval mortar rather than as a baptismal font and may have belonged to the adjoining Herbertstown Castle (KD023-018003-) or was used for domestic purposes of the residential priest living inside Herbertstown Church. Such a function has been suggested for several large undecorated bowls which lacked a central drainage hole and were initially identified as fonts (Roe 1968, 12). The stone was removed from Herbertstown Church (KD023-018----) some time before 1990 by local parishioners and placed in the graveyard of St. Peter’s R. C. Church, Two-Mile-House (Gibson 1990, 60).
