According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 3, 292-303), Kill is likely to have originated in an early monastic foundation (KD019-008002-) of which no visible surface trace survived. However, in 1993, archaeological test-trenching uncovered portion of a probable ecclesiastical enclosure (KD019-008007-). Kill subsequently formed part of 'the cantred of Offelan nearest to Dublin' which was granted by Strongbow to Adam de Hereford in the sub-infeudation of Leinster in the early 13th century, around which time, or possibly slightly earlier, a motte (KD019-008004-) was erected, possibly by John de Hereford. Charters record that between 1215 and 1223, Thomas de Hereford granted the church of Kill (KD018-008006-) to St Thomas' Abbey, Dublin, and mention is made of his 'vill of Kill'. [An earlier charter of 1206-1223 records that St Thomas' Abbey already held possessions at Kill, including a grange with a croft, garden and haggard, however, Conroy (2007, 187-93), suggests that the grange may have been at Hartwell Castle (KD019-015----), c. 1 mile to the S.] The precise location and extent of the original borough is uncertain, and the first specific reference to a borough here is not until 1608, in a list of boroughs and towns in Kildare, when Richard Dowlin is named as provost of the town of Kill. In 1629, upon his death, Thomas Hamlin held a castle (KD019-006003-), six messuages and 120 acres in the vill of Kill from the Earl of Kildare. A 1659 census recorded a population of 92 at Kill, and the present main street probably preserves a 17th century street pattern. On low-lying ground, drained by the small, N-flowing, Kill River. According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 23 (65)), 'This Parish (Kill) is under the patronage of Saint Bridget, whose church 'Cill Brighde' (Cella S. Brigidae) from which the parish took its denomination, stood either on the site of, or near the Protestant Church …'. Bradley et al (1986 vol. 3, 296-8) agree that St John's Church is the most likely location for the possible early monastic foundation, of which no visible surface trace survived, apart from a long, sweeping bend in the road, to SW, W and N of the church, which may reflect the line of a former early ecclesiastical enclosure. In 1993, pre-development archaeological test-trenching (Licence no. 93E0059) in this area led to further testing in 1996 (Licence no. 96E079) and the discovery of portion of the enclosing fosse of a probable ecclesiastical enclosure (KD019-008007-). However, the precise locations of an associated church or subsequent Anglo-Norman church (KD019-008006-) are unknown, but a late medieval font (KD019-008005-) lies outside the N door of the 19th century Protestant church. A plain, square, limestone font (dims. L 0.51m; Wth 0.51m; H. 0.39m) with a circular, straight-sided basin (diam. 0.42m; D 0.27m) lies outside the N door of St John's Church. Kill is likely to have originated in an early monastic foundation (KD019-008002-), and although no visible surface traces survive, the OSL (Herity 2002, 23 (65)) suggest the monastery lay on the site of, or near, the 19th century St John's Church, and Bradley et al (1986 vol. 3, 296-8) concur. In 1993, pre-development archaeological test-trenching led to the discovery of portion of the enclosing fosse of a probable ecclesiastical enclosure (KD019-008007-), and the enclosed area was probably also the location of a later, Anglo-Norman church, of which no visible surface survives. According to Bradley et al (op. cit.), the church of Kill (SS Mary and Brigid) had been granted to St Thomas' Abbey, Dublin by 1202, and while its mention in several 13th century grants suggest it was of some importance, little is known of its later medieval history. It was still associated with St Thomas' Abbey in 1540, and continued to function after the Dissolution. A font (KD019-008005-) of possible 16th century date lies outside the N door of St John's Church. A chamfered window jambstone with glazing groove and bar holes from the medieval church lies in the graveyard to the S of the C of I church. Present St. John's Church was probably built on site of medieval church. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011 - KD019-008007: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKD019-008007-. Bradley et al (1986 vol. 3, 296-8) agree and suggest that the long, sweeping bend in the road, to SW, W and N of the church may reflect the line of an early ecclesiastical enclosure. In 1993, pre-development archaeological test-trenching (Licence no. 93E0059: www.archaeology.ie) led to further testing in 1996 (Licence no. 96E079: www.archaeology.ie) and the discovery of portion of a probable ecclesiastical enclosure. A broad, U-shaped fosse (Wth 4.3m; D 1m) was found running roughly E-W (traceable L c. 25m) c. 45m to the SW of St John's Church, but no associated finds were uncovered. Its presence suggests that the sweeping bend in the road to the SW and W of the church may have been curved to avoid the enclosure's line, or may represent the line of a second, outer enclosing element.
