According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 397), 'St. Erc, bishop of Lilcach (Lullymore) and Slane died 512. The Gall from Lilcach died 730; Cuan, anchorite, died 748.' At the E tip of Lullymore 'island', a sub-circular area (est. diam. c. 2000m) of higher ground in a broad expanse of bog, accessed via modern roads from the E and W, but previously connected to higher ground to the N and S by two toghers (KD012-004001- and KD012-007----). The monument comprises the poorly preserved remains of a large, roughly D-shaped enclosure (KD012-006001-) which contains a second, smaller, irregular-shaped enclosure (KD012-006002-), which itself contains a possible church site (KD012-0006004-) and a graveyard (KD012-006005-), and is abutted along the S by a third, rectangular enclosure (KD012-006003-), to the N of which lies a possible field system (KD012-006006-). There is also a bullaun (KD012-006007-) on the site, together with three cross-inscribed stones (KD012-006009-, KD012-006010- and KD012-006011-). Seven other cross-inscribed stones (KD012-010----, KD012-010001- to KD012-010005- and KD012-010008-) and two small crosses (KD012-010006- and KD012-010007-), originally in the graveyard, are now incorporated into a 1798 memorial c. 600m to the NW in Lullymore West. An eight cross-inscribed stone (KD012-020----), also from the graveyard, is now in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre Museum. An unlocated holy well (KD012-006008-) also appears to have been associated with the site. Visible on several aerial photographs (CUCAP APH 80 (1966), APH 83 (1966), AYM 5 (1969) and BGH 73 (1971)) (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 56). A large, fairly poorly preserved, D-shaped area (diam. c. 340m E-W) with a straight W side (L c. 280m) is defined by an inner earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; H c. 1m), a fosse (Wth 4m; D 1.5m), and a second, outer earthen bank of similar dimensions to the inner one, NW-N-SE. Only the inner earthen bank survives from SE-S-SW, and the line of the original enclosing element is followed by a modern earthen field bank on the straight W side. This is the main enclosure of the early ecclesiastical site at Lullymore (KD012-006----). O'Leary (1906-08, 199), quotes Comerford who wrote, 'On the island of Lullymore is the site of an old parochial church, of which the foundations are plainly discernable .. .', and Rynne, in 1965, noted that, 'traces of a mortared stone structure aligned E-W … may well be the remains of an early church' (SMR file). Located in a graveyard (KD012-006005-) which forms part of the early ecclesiastical site at Lullymore (KD012-006----). Three closely associated toghers (KD012-014----, KD012-014001- and KD012-014002-) running parallel to one another were surveyed: KD012-014----: A substantial gravel and wood togher (L 550m; av. Wth. 4.5m; D 0.10-0.9m) orientated NNE-SSW crosses Lullymore East bog between the dry land islands of Lullymore, to the NE, and Lullybeg, to the SW. The monument is visible in 22 Bord na Mona drain faces and can be traced for most of its length as a raised, vegetation line on the bog's surface. It is composed of a layer of gravel beneath which are large transverse timbers lying on top of smaller longitudinal timbers and beneath these timbers is a layer of possibly re-deposited peat. The monument is dated AD380-660. The remains of a second togher (KD012-014001-) was found running parallel, immediately to the E, as well as traces of a third togher (KD012-014002-), running parallel to the E again. It was composed of transverse timbers lying on top of longitudinal timbers, and was damaged probably because it lay so close to the bog surface. The monument is dated AD900-1160.
