This is a multi-period church dating from the 10th/11thC to the 15thC. It is a rectangular structure of uncoursed limestone rubble with a few dressed granite quoins (dims. 28.8m x 5.7m). The E gable (H. 7-8m) has a modern window (possibly similar to the original. Its belfry, which is shown by Cooper in 1784 at the SE corner of the church, fell down in the early nineteenth century and the Lady chapel and N wall were pulled down in the 1830's (JKAS 1895, 292-3). The E end of the N wall is still standing (H. 5m). There are single light splayed windows in the N and S walls. The W gable (H. 8m) has two lintelled windows. There is a lintelled entrance at the W end of the S wall. The church at Moone is first mentioned in 1179, when it was listed within the diocese of Glendalough and was granted to St. Patrick's cathedral in Dublin between 1220 and 1228 (McNeill 1950, 5). A royal visitation of 1615 described it as in good repair, but it was ruinous by 1630 (Arch. Hib. 1941, 51). The high crosses are probably not in their original positions. A dovecote has been built into the tower house, and access to the main chamber on the first floor is now via a hole broken through the lintelled corridor. This floor has ogee headed windows, and similar windows light the stairway to the third floor (the dovecote has completely blocked access to the second floor), which has a stone arched fireplace. The earliest settlement at Moone, which is now a small village, was the ecclesiastical site dedicated to St Colmcille, for which the earliest references are in the eleventh century (Bradley et al. 1986 vol. 3, 324-42). The Irish name for the town 'Maoin Colm Cille' means 'the property of St Colmcille'. The borough was established in the thirteenth century, and a charter was granted to Moone c. 1223 which included a number of special privileges for the burgesses, including restrictions on outside merchants trading in the town (Aois 1946, 246-50). The same charter indicates the presence of a castle, a hospice, and mills, and a church of some importance. There are few references to the town after the thirteenth century, although there was a garrison or castle here in 1580 (Hamilton 1867, 266), and the Down Survey (1655-6) showed two crosses and mill at Moone. Discovered during monitoring of topsoil-stripping in advance of construction of the N9 Moone–Timolin– Ballitore road, close to the summit of an extensive grass-covered sand and gravel deposit, and archaeologically excavated (Excavation Licence No. 00E0193: Ó Ríordáin 2000 (No. 506) in http://www.excavations.ie [Accessed 15 January 2013]). A rectangular capstone (L 1.6m; Wth1.1m; T 0.34m) covered a square cist (L 0.79m N-S; Wth 0.78m; D 0.55m) formed by four stone slabs; there was no floor slab. It contained a crouched skeleton lying on its right side, facing W with the head at the N end. An upright bowl food vessel lay on the hands, close to the head on its W side. A large, roughly circular pit (diam. 2.15m E-W; D 0.84m), had been dug to accommodate the cist. Within an immediate rectangular area (c. 10m N-S; c. 5m E-W) a further seven pit burials were uncovered (KD036-051001-). Within an immediate rectangular area (c. 10m N-S; c. 5m E-W) of a cist burial (KD036-051----) a further seven pit burials were uncovered. Recorded as features F2 to F7, they comprised the following: F2 was a much-eroded pit with some long bones and some human teeth. F3 held a crouched skeleton aligned N-S; elements of the skeleton were missing, including hand, feet and pelvis bones, and part of the skull. F4a was a small circular pit containing the remains of an infant; a marker stone was sited on the pit. F4b was a large oval pit that held the crouched skeleton of a female, orientated NW-SE; two boar tusks, four flints and a small fragment of metal were also found with the burial. F5 held a crouched skeleton aligned E-W, with the head to the E; it was accompanied by a bowl food vessel located close to the pelvis. One small pit, F6, containing a cremation and flint, lay close to the cist grave. F7 held a crouched skeleton aligned N-S, with the head to the north; a flint arrowhead lay on the E side of the skull, and a bowl food vessel, in a poor state of preservation, was found close to the feet.
