- KD008-029001: Road - class 1 togher, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKD008-029001-. A wooden trackway crossed Timahoe Bog on an ESE-WNW orientation linking dry ground near Ardnacoolia in Timahoe West townland to the E with dry ground in Loughnacush and Parsonstown townlands to the W (est. L c. 2275m). It intersected a second, oak, trackway (KD008-030----/KD009-018----) mid-way across the bog, which is being harvested by Bord na Mona. Two small sections (L 35m and L 6m) of 'flimsy path made of birch logs' were archaeologically excavated in 1986 (Munroe 1987, 22) and comprised small logs (max. L 2m; diam. 0.1m) laid end to end, in an irregular pattern. Beyond a rough trimming of the ends, there was no evidence of carpentry, nor did the track include any brushwood or thin roundwood. According to the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (UCD), the site was radiocarbon dated to 2466-2200 (3864±45bp; GrN14248) (Brindley & Lanting 1998, 47-8). A narrow oak trackway (Wth 1.25m) on a brushwood substructure (Wth 2-2.5m) may originally have traversed c. 2,600m of Timahoe Bog (ENE-WSW) between dry ground at Drumachon 'island' to the E, and dry ground in Kilkeaskin townland to the W. It intersected a second togher (KD008-029----/KD009-019----) which crosses the same stretch of bog, but on a NNW-ESE orientation. The trackway was excavated by Rynne in 1966 (SMR file) and was examined again in 1986 (Munro 1987, 22) and also in 1992 (Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (UCD), SMR file). It consisted of a haphazard arrangement of large oak planks laid longitudinally and transversely, with occasional narrow side planks, supported upon a substructure of roundwood runners. A thick layer of brushwood, secured by pegs, underlay the main timbers and extended beyond their N-edge. Several morticed planks were recorded, one of which contained a peg in a mortice, and several other notched timbers, probably of yew, were noted extending beyond the northern edge of the structure, but were of uncertain function. Yew 'posts' recorded as projecting about 0.7m above the level of the togher and posited as route-way markers might be explained as pegs that had risen up through the peat. Dendrochronological dating suggests a two-phase structure: the substructure is dated to 1483 BC (Q6416) and the superstructure to 1378±9BC (Q6672), (N.M.I. IA/12/66; Brindley & Lanting 1998, 47-8). The surviving remains (L 218.9m ENE-WSW; Wth 2.5m; D 0.3m) were surveyed by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit in 1992. They consist of a compact arrangement of transversely laid roundwoods, brushwood and planks, the latter having morticed ends. Oak and birch brushwood, up to eight rods deep, was used as a filler between the roundwoods and planks and as a substructure to the overlying planks. Many displaced timbers in the area indicate that the site was originally more extensive. All in-situ timbers were covered by a fine layer of sand/gravel. One plank (L 3.5m) had been radially split and had the remains of a rotted-out, parallel-sided mortice at one end. A probable yew roundwood (L 1.63m) was also morticed and a number of pieces had their ends worked into wedge and chisel points. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

The site (L 115m; Wth 2.1m; min. D 0.2m) is orientated NW - SE and consists of a compact layer of longitudinal ash and oak roundwoods (diam. 0.08-0.16m) with occasional hazel brushwood rods (diam. 0.008-0.03m). Some of the roundwoods have been split in half. Pegs, worked into wedge and chisel points, secure the outer edges of the structure. A two-layered structure (L 61.8m; Wth 3.1m; D 0.33m), lying just 0.3m above the mineral soil, is composed of a compact longitudinal roundwood and brushwood superstructure (diams. 0.02-0.05m) above a thin, dispersed layer of brushwood (hazel, birch and yew) four rods deep. Some of the roundwood (diams. 0.17-0.195m) was identified as ash. A number of pieces are worked into wedge and chisel points. Hazelnuts were present within the structure. The site is exposed in section in the N face of a turf bank in a Bord na Móna bog. The turf bank is 2.5m high and the site is located 1.4m below the bog surface. It comprises a partially removed and degrading deposit (Wth 0.96m; T 0.09m) of over 15 pieces of light brushwood (max. diams. 0.04m ) and twigs. On level pasture near the S end of Drumachon, a small 'island' in Timahoe bog. A poorly preserved trackway (Wth 3m) defined by a narrow, shallow fosse on each side (Wth 0.8-1m; D 0.1-0.2m) is traceable for a short distance (L c. 20m) running SSW from a Children's Burial Ground (KD009-006001-) towards the bog c. 200m to the S. A second, similar trackway, running W from the Children's Burial Ground, noted in 1986 (SMR file) in no longer clearly identifiable and the immediate area is very heavily poached by livestock. On a low pasture rise on the N margins of Timahoe bog. According to the OSL (Herity 2005, 42), '… there is a field called Castlefield (where) there stood formerly a Castle, the walls of which were entirely cleared away more than 30 years ago'. However, the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map names an unroofed, rectangular structure (est. dims. L c. 18m N-S ; Wth c. 10m) 'Site of Timahoe Castle', at the NE end of 'Castle Field'.
