In a graveyard (KD022-034001-) near the top of a short, gentle, E-facing pasture slope, Tully House located 170m to E. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 338-9), the church 'de Tuly' was confirmed to the Knights Hospitallers by Pope Innocent III in 1212, probably on the site of Tulach-Fobhair, an early dependency of Fore. The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem originated in a hospice founded in Jerusalem around 1070 to care for pilgrims and was dedicated to St John the Baptist. The order of St. John of Jerusalem is also known today as the Knights Hospitaller and the Knights of Malta. The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in Ireland consisted of a central Priory founded at Kilmainham (DU018-020286-), Co. Dublin in 1174 with subordinate houses known as preceptories located through the country. Tully church is one of these preceptories and is sometimes referred to in historical documents as the manor of Tully. The preceptory is one of three in Co. Kildare mentioned in the register of Chapter Acts of the Hospital of Kilmainham for 1326-39: see also Killybegs (KD013-019001-) and Kilteel (KD020-007003-) (DHR 1985, 108-9). The foundation date of the preceptory is not known and was established some time between 1174 and 1212. A carved sandstone fragment with roll moulding of 12th century appearance may suggest that there was an earlier Romanesque church here prior to the foundation of the Preceptory. This fragment has a sheela-na-gig (KD022-037002-) carved onto one face and lies on the surface of the graveyard to the W of the church ruins. Alternatively the sandstone fragment may indicate a late 12th century date for the construction of the preceptory at Tully. In 1297 there is a reference to the church and grange belonging to the preceptory of Tully, and to a Brother Robert who was the prior of Tully. The location of Tully grange has not been identified. Between these years a court case was held at Kildare which gave the following account;'Hugh de Kilbeg, and Rob. le Dryuere broke into the grange of the Master of Toly [Tully]; and Roger le Geyte, Henry le Graunger, Ric. le Rov, Walter de Kilbeg, and Ric. le Carter came upon them and slew them, and dragged Will, le Calewe, John le Couhird, and Clement de Kilbeg from their beds by night, and slew them and robbed their clothes, and without view of the Coroner buried them, and were received in the house of Toly by brother Bernard, Thomas C . ., and Thomas the chaplain, of Kilbeg, knowing well of the felony. And Roger de Galeweye, then seneschal of Toly, took Ric. le Rov and Walter de Kilbeg, and another, and imprisoned them, and the other escaped to the church, and Roger dragged him from the church, and brother Robert, master of Toly, sent him back to the church, and by command of Roger gallows were raised in prejudice of the liberty of Kildare, in the tenement of Toly, and Ricard and Walter were hanged' (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 174). The following year a second account of this incident id described as following; ‘Brother Robert prior of Toly [Tully], charged that he robbed Walter Goldffinch of hay, to the value of half a mark; and from the wife of the Couhirde of Toly, half a crannoc of malt; also that when Hugh de Kilbeg and Rob. le Driuere broke the grange of the said preceptor of Toly, and Roger Wayte, Henry le Graunger, Ric. le Rou, Walter de Kilbeg, and Ric. le Carter, who are now dead, slew said Hugh and Roger-, and afterwards, said Roger le Wayte and the others, the same night, slew, within the court of said grange. Will de Calwe, John le Couhirde, and Clement de Kilbeg, and robbed them of their clothes, and afterward buried them without view of the Coroner, and after that were received in the house of Toly as men of peace, dwelling, eating, and drinking there. And afterward Roger de Galweye, seneschal of Toly, took two of said felons, Henry le Graunger and Ricard le Rou, and Henry fled to the church of Toly, and Roger took him from the church and imprisoned him; said brother Robert sent him back to the church, to save the church's right, and he then acknowledged the deed before the Coroner and abjured the land of the King; and Roger, the seneschal, caused gallows to be raised in the highway towards Offaly, and caused the other felons to be hung there. Brother Robert put himself on the country’ (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 203-04). An inquisition into the lands of the dissolved preceptory at Tully was held at Kildare on the 25th of November, 1540. The possessions of the preceptory were described in this inquisition as consisting of 'a castle or fortilage (KD022-066----) necessary for the farmer, with orchard, garden, 60 acr. ar.[able] of the demesne lands and 2 acr. p.[asture]; 60s. ... A cottage; 2s., and customs, 2 hooks and 1 hen, 6d. A watermill, 26s 8d.' (White 1943, 96; Fitzgerald 1903-5, 130-1). A corn mill (KD027-049----) located 450m to S may be the watermill or possibly the two stone water chute stones known as 'St Brigid's kneeling stones' (KD027-010002-) at Brallistown Commons located 345m to the SW may have been part of this watermill. In 1837 Ordnance Survey letters recorded that the tower of the abbey was 'of a square form, and called Castle in common, as yet remains in the ruins' (OSL RIA 14/D/4/13(iv)). The following year King Henry VIII granted John Walyngton, late sub-prior of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, and last preceptor of Tully, Co. Kildare, an annual pension valued at £16 13s. 4d. (Nicholls 1994, 28). In 1569 Queen Elizabeth I granted Sir William Sarcefeld [Sarsfield], 'the preceptory of Tully, county Kildare, the lands of Tully, Moreton, Frereton, Bralessan, Terwen, and Prompelan, same county, of the possessions of the priory of Kilmaynan, the rectories of Tulley, Downene, Rathbride, Calveston, and Founteston, impropriate to the said preceptory, the tithe-corn of Moreton by Kilca, Kilcale by Connall, Kilcorke, and Ballyenlen, same county. John of Jerusalem in Ireland, 1535, to David Sutton, of Rathforyd, gent., for sixty-one years' (Nicholls 1994, 180-1). The manor of Tully was granted to Henry Harrington which included the 'site of the manor or preceptory of Tullie, co. Kildare, the demesne lands, the lands of Tully, with a mill, Mooretown, and Frereton, with the customs of the tenants, land in Bralessen, Treven and Prompellan, co. Kildare ; the rectories of Tully, Downen, Rathbride, and Calveston, and the tithes of Ballyenlen, Frereton, Mooreton by Kilkae, Kilkale by Connall, and Kilkorke, belonging to the said preceptory, (rent £21 6s. 8d.); the lands of Rosberie, Scarleston, Moorton, and Richardeston, co. Kildare, and their tithes, and the tithes of Cornelescorte, same co., possessions of the priory of Connall, same co., (rent £7 11s. 4d.) To hold in tail male, by the service of a twentieth part of a knight's fee. Rent £27 8s., as above, and rendering yearly 10 bushels of wheat and barley malt, and 10 bushels of oat malt' (Nicholls 1994, 513). In 1615 King James I granted Philip Hore lands including the 'the preceptory or manor of Tully, containing the site thereof, 3 houses, a cottage, an orchard, a garden, 160a arable, 2a pasture, a mill, and the customs of the tenants—Moretowne, containing 2 houses, a cottage, the customs of the tenants, and 80a ; Frereton, containing 2 houses, a cottage, the like customs, and 60a; Bralissan, containing a house and 6a; Trenen otherwise Tribune end Prompelane, 20a; the rectories of Tully, Downy otherwise Downeny, Rathbride, and Calwestowne; the tithes and alterages of Frereton, parcel of Rathbride rect. the tithes of Mooretowne near K - KD022-034001: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKD022-034001-. Situated on low hillock with Tully House 160m to E and St. Bridget's Well (KD022-035----) 140m to SSE. The graveyard is now adjacent to the National Stud of Ireland and present remains consist of a sub-rectangular shaped area (approx. dims. 67m N-S; 52m E-W) enclosed by a 19th century stone wall entered through a gate with adjacent stone stile and coffin stand in centre of W wall. The church ruins belonging to the Preceptory of the Knight’s Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem (KD022-034----) stands on the highest point in the centre of the graveyard. In 1298 there was a court case regarding a murder which took place within the cemetery of Tully. In this year 'Roger de Galewey, who says that he was provost of Toli [Tully], and the felon committed the homicide within the cemetery, and therefore was taken from the church [KD022-034----] and put in the stocks in the house of the Master' (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 203). The graveyard contains pots-medieval grave markers, although several graves are marked by medieval chamfered window jambs recycled from the church ruins. Numerous burials are located inside the church ruins. A sheela-na-gig (KD022-034002-) was recently recorded in the W quadrant of the graveyard. Situated 145m SSW of Tully House and 150m SSE of Tully graveyard (KD022-034001-) containing the Preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers (KD022-034----). In 1837 Thomas O'Conor of the Ordnance Survey recorded that 'St Brigid's Well lies in the west of the same townland and near Tully House, the residence of Mr. Pottinger' (O'Flanagan 1927, 62). In 1903 the site was described as a 'well or basin built of cut stone the work of the Board of Works, which by some people is called St. Brigid's Well; but this is an error, as the real St. Brigid's Well (KD027-010001-) is situated, in a neglected state on a bit of commons called "The Grallach" (i.e., a miry place) in the townland of Brallistown' (Fitzgerald 1903-5, 130). According to Jackson (1979-80, 157) the stone surround of the well was built during the 1840s as a source of local employment. Associated with St. Brigid and still venerated, this small circular well (diam. 1.3m) now a pool of stagnant water is enclosed by a low stone wall accessed from a modern paved area. Ribbons and other votive offerings have been tied to the branches of a tree overhanging the well. Tully House located 170m E of Tully Preceptory (KD022-034----) of the Knights Hosptiallers was the late 16th/17th century residence of the Sarsfield family and the manorial house or castle of the manor of Tully. In 1837 Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland recorded that Tully House was then the residence of William Dunne (Lewis 1837, 657). This house was possibly built on the site or incorporated remains of the medieval castle. Regarding this possible castle location, Fitzgerald (1903-5, 128, 130) recorded the following; ‘Of Tully castle not one stone stands on another: the house lately occupied by Mr. James Fay probably was built out of the materials.’ Tully House depicted on the 1838 ed.; OS 6-inch map was levelled and replaced by a modern Tully House which stands today in the Japanese Gardens on the grounds of the Irish National Stud. Archaeological monitoring under licence number 98E0288 of topsoil-stripping in connection with the construction of a coach park and new roadway adjacent to the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens, part of the Kildare Town Bypass project, revealed some material of archaeological interest. The main feature discovered was a deposit of over one hundred glazed potsherds of medieval date, some animal bones, molluscs and other domestic refuse. This deposit is considered to have been in a secondary position and used as infill on marshy ground. The finds were probably originally associated with a Commandery of the Knights Hospitallers established at nearby Tully House in the early 13th century. Tully House became the manorial house of the manor of Tully established in the 17th century. The manor of Tully was granted to Henry Harrington which included the 'site of the manor or preceptory of Tullie, co. The condition of this grant stated that Philip was to hold 'the receptory of Tully and all the premises to Cornellscourt, to him, and his heirs, so long as the heirs male of the body of sir Henry Harrington, knt, shall die without issue male; the reversion to the Crown' (ibid.). In 1628 the manor of Tully was created when King Charles I granted 'Peter Sarsfield, as assignee of Philip Percivall, of the site of the manor and preceptory of Tully, with the appurtenances, in the county of Kildare, and several lands, tenements, rectories, and tithes, parcel of the temporal and spiritual possesions of the preceptory, in the county of Kildare; to be held in capite, by the twentieth part of knight's fee. In 1647 during the Irish Confederate Wars, Tully Preceptory (KD022-034----) served as a garrison for the Irish Confederate army under the command of General Sarsfield and Tully House was described as a castle or 'Chief House'. On the 3rd of February in this year Colonel Jones of the Parliamentarian army marched on the Confederate army quartered in Kildare town to discuss terms of their surrender and the following account was written in letters sent to the House of Commons; 'During the time of this Parle [Feb. 5], an Accident happened at the Enemy's Garrison of Tully, some half a Mile off Kildare; a House close to the Castle took fire, our Soldiers ran down amain thither; a commanded Party was also sent, and at the Gate fell Pell Mell to work, and forcing the Gate, a Corporal of Horse and a Lieutenant of foot were shot. Identified in 2002 during monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the route of the Kildare Bypass, and subsequently archaeologically excavated (Ó Maoldúin 2002. Excavation Licence No. 02E0541). A substantial number of pits and post- and stake-holes extended over a distance of c. 70m along the route of the bypass, and while most were seemingly random features, with no obvious interrelation, two foci of activity were identified. A concentration of stake- and post-holes was observed on the E side of the site: one of the post-holes contained a large, well-preserved sherd of a prehistoric vessel with incised decoration. Nearby was a possible hearth, comprising two inter-connected, shallow, bowl-shaped features containing some charcoal and ashy material and evidence of in situ burning around the edges. Three flint flakes were also found here. A small isolated pit lay 30m to the W, and contained five sherds of poorly preserved pottery, similar in type to that recovered to the E. To the W and S, four pits constituted another focus of activity. All contained charcoal-rich soil and fire-cracked quartz stone, indicative of possible fulacht fiadh material. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
