According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 466), this church is 'known to the local Irish speakers as Killavoogue'. Only the footings (Wth c. 1m; H 0.2-0.4m) of the rectangular church (dims. c. 14m E-W; c. 7m N-S) survive. It is enclosed within a roughly circular graveyard (KK014-021002-). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 466), this church is 'known to the local Irish speakers as Killavoogue'. It is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as, 'Kilmogue Grave Yard for Children' and is described in the OS Letters (1839) as, ‘a small enclosure like a low rath a little to the south of the old Church in the townland of Ballyfoyle, which the people call Cill Mogue (the Cell of Maodhoge); there remains no appearance of a building but they make it the place of sepulture of still-born or very young infants’ (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 31 (11)). A roughly circular graveyard (diam. c. 50m) defined by a very low bank (Wth c. 1.5m; H 0.1-0.2m) encloses the remains of the church (KK014-021001-). On top of the S end of a N-S ridge between two valleys, with very steep slopes to E, S and W. In a very prominent defensive position. There are excellent views in all directions. A raised circular area (diam. 33m) enclosed by a bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 4.2m; Wth at crest 2m; overall Wth 6-8m); fosse (Wth 3.7m; D 1.3m) and intermittent traces of a possible outer bank (ext. H 0.4m; Wth 1.5m) which may be an old field boundary. The location and morphology of the monument suggest that this may be a ringwork rather than a ringfort. On the E side of a farmyard which is located on the E side of a valley adjacent to a small stream, in rolling grassland. There are fair to good views along the valley though they are limited to E and W where the land rises. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 465) the castle, ‘was built, or was occupied soon after its erection, by the Purcells, who were the feudal lords of the greater part of the present Catholic parish of Muckalee, during the 15th and 16th centuries and early part of the 17th. Under the Cromwellian regime, Philip Purcell, being an Irish Papist, was declared to have forfeited his estate of Ballyfoyle, which was thereupon granted, with Ballyfoyle castle, to one of Cromwell’s followers named Tobias Cramer’. The castle continued to be inhabited, together with a 17th-century house (KK014-023002-) which was attached to it, until c. 1748, about three years after the house had unexpectedly collapsed (ibid.). In c. 1810 the upper portion of the castle was removed, ‘including the garret and one or two storeys underneath it, [which] was thrown down to supply materials for building purposes’ (ibid.). A rectangular tower house (ext. dims. 12.8m N-S; 8.5m E-W; N wall is actually the NW wall etc.) surviving to third-floor level, built of roughly coursed limestone rubble (wall T 2.3m) with dressed quoins and a base-batter (H 3.2m). The lower portion of the quoins are robbed out to a height of c. 3m. All surviving doorways are pointed and the windows are ogee-headed within wide embrasures. The tower house is entered via a doorway at the E end of the N wall with yett-hole at the apex. This leads into a lobby with a small barrel-vaulted chamber or guardroom to the W, a doorway to the E giving access to a spiral stair rising in the NE angle and an opposing doorway giving access to the main ground-floor chamber. Apart from the small ground-floor chamber, there are no other vaults in the tower house, the upper chambers being carried on wooden floors supported on punch-dressed corbels. The ground floor is lit by a single-light window in the E wall with a gun-loop in the S splay of the embrasure. There was another window in the W wall but this window embrasure has been broken through to create a large opening. The first floor consists of a small chamber running along the N wall and a larger chamber to the S, accessed from the spiral stair. The main chamber at second-floor level is accessed from the spiral stair and is lit by a single-light window at the S end of the E wall, a blocked-up double-light window in the S wall and a single-light window at the N end of the W wall. A doorway in the S wall of the W window embrasure gives access to an L-shaped mural chamber lit by an angle-loop. There is also a doorway in the W wall of the S window embrasure which gives access to an L-shaped chamber also lit by an angle-loop. The main chamber has a large fireplace at the S end of the W wall. A doorway in the N wall of the main chamber opens onto a small chamber lit by a window in the N wall and an angle-loop. Also at second-floor level, but accessed from the spiral stair, is a small garderobe in the E wall lit by a single window. Detached six-bay double-height Gothic Revival Catholic church, built 1866-72, on site of earlier Catholic chapel, pre-1840, comprising five-bay double-height nave with single-bay double-height lower chancel to east having single-bay single-storey sacristy to south-east. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles having decorative crested ridge to nave, cut-stone chamfered coping to gables having cross finials to apexes, cut-limestone buttressed gabled bellcote to apex to sacristy (with trefoil-headed aperture on chamfered course having chamfered reveals, cast-iron bell, and cut-limestone coping having cross finial to apex), and cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-limestone chamfered eaves. Irregular coursed tooled cut-limestone walls with cut-limestone buttresses (stepped to entrance (west) front) having cut-limestone coping, and cut-limestone plaque over entrance bay having cut-limestone pointed-arch surround supporting squared limestone voussoirs. Trefoil-headed lancet window openings (some paired; paired to entrance (west) front in pointed-arch frame having quatrefoil to arch, and hood moulding over supporting squared limestone voussoirs; paired to chancel having quatrefoil to gable) on carved cut-limestone sill course with cut-limestone surrounds having chamfered reveals, squared limestone voussoirs, and fixed-pane fittings having leaded stained glass panels. Pointed-arch door opening with cut-limestone surround having carved rebated reveals, hood moulding over supporting squared limestone voussoirs, and tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors having overpanel. Full-height interior open into roof with glazed timber panelled internal porch incorporating glazed timber panelled double doors having glazed timber panelled re-entrant flanking doors, timber floors incorporating herring-bone pattern, timber pews, quatrefoil panelled timber panelled gallery to first floor on Doric columns, bull-nose reveals to window openings, exposed timber roof construction on cut-stone corbels, pointed-arch chancel arch with chamfered reveals, and Gothic-style altar furniture. Set in own grounds with random rubble limestone boundary wall to perimeter of site having rubble limestone piers, and iron gate. (ii) Graveyard to site with various cut-stone markers, pre-1840-present.

Detached five-bay single-storey thatched cottage with dormer attic, c.1800. Pitched roof with wheat thatch having rope work to ridge, red brick Running bond squat chimney stack, and rendered coping to gables. Painted roughcast walls over random rubble stone construction with slight batter. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, and two-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening with glazed timber panelled door. Set back from road in own grounds with painted roughcast piers having shallow pyramidal capping, and iron gate. (ii) Detached nine-bay single-storey outbuilding with half-attic, c.1875, to north comprising three-bay single-storey central block with three-bay single-storey flush lateral wing to right, and three-bay single-storey recessed lateral wing to left having elliptical-headed carriageway. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods on squared rubble limestone eaves. Random rubble limestone walls. Square-headed window openings (some slit-style) with cut-limestone sills, cut-limestone lintels, and timber fittings. Square-headed door openings with cut-limestone lintels, and timber boarded doors. Elliptical-headed carriageway with tooled cut-limestone voussoirs, and timber boarded doors.
