At the foot of a steep slope 100m W of the River Barrow. Much of the monument is concealed beneath field debris that has been dumped there in modern times. The tomb (H 2.5m), aligned N-S, is very ruined and only one upright is now visible. A photo of the monument in the Bord Fáile archives shows a stone standing at the N end of gallery which has a gable-shaped backstone at its S end. The monument cannot be classified with certainty but appears to be related to the court/portal tomb traditions. There is a gap of c. 30m between the inner (diam. c. 50-60m) and outer enclosure. In tillage. Identified on an aerial photograph (GB91.DZ.04, 15 July 1991) as the cropmark of an incomplete oval enclosure (diam. c. 100m) defined by a fosse. The fosse is visible from SE-S-NW. There is an area of darker staining in the interior of the enclosure close to the fosse in the SW quadrant which may indicate where small scale quarrying had taken place. A field boundary runs roughly E-W through the centre of the enclosure. There is a house on a small plot immediately E of the SE sector and another house on a larger plot encroaching on the enclosure in the NE sector. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 21 April 2021 - KK025-014: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKK025-014----. Identified as the cropmark of a rectangular enclosure (overall dims. c. 57m NW-SE; c. 43m NE-SW), defined by two closely spaced fosses, visible on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BGH011, 16 July 1971). On the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and the 1900 revision this enclosure is indicated as a small field associated with a farm house and yard. The field had been levelled by 1968 and on satellite imagery (Google Earth imagery date 8 June 2005) the farm buildings and all the associated field boundaries had been removed by 2005 and are now within a large tillage field. The presence of two fosses defining this enclosure suggest that it was not an ordinary field or paddock but that it may be a monument. See attached: KK025-014----_01 aerial photograph (CUCAP BGH011, 16 July 1971) Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 28 February 2022 - KK025-015001: Religious house - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKK025-015001-. On a NW-facing slope overlooking Powerstown River. Annotated as ‘Monastery’ on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map, though the precise location is not indicated. On the 1900 revision it is indicated as, ‘Monastery (Site of)’ with a cross marking the location. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 4, 278-80), the Abbey of Killenny, a daughter house of Jerpoint Abbey, was located, ‘in the townland of Old Abbey, now Barrowmount, parish of Paulstown, in the ancient territory of the O’Ryans of Idrone. It was founded and endowed by Dermod O’Ryan, Chief of Idrone, and was colonized by monks sent thither from Jerpoint, by its Abbot, Felix O’Dulany’. He cites the foundation charter which dates from between the years 1162 and 1166 (ibid. 280). The OS Letters (1839) mention a local tradition that, ‘previous to the building of the Abbey in Graigue the Monks chose this as their first site but owing to some spell or witchcraft that operated against them they were unable to proceed; it is said that whatever they built in the day was thrown down at night; they then changed their intentions and removed to Graigue’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 25-6 (9-10)). However, the author of the OS Letters was not convinced that there had been a monastery at this location and suggests that instead there was a castle which was subsequently demolished to provide building material for Brookhill House, which even by 1839 was itself in ruins (ibid.). Brookhill House (KK025-015002-) does not survive above ground level, however, large blocks of granite and some cut-stone fragments were noted, during a field inspection in 1994, in the outbuildings and surrounding walls associated with the house. These appear to have come from a medieval building, though the nature of that building could not be ascertained. 4, 278-80), the Abbey of Killenny, a daughter house of Jerpoint Abbey, was located, ‘in the townland of Old Abbey, now Barrowmount', between the years 1162 and 1166. The author of the OS Letters (1839) was not convinced that there had been a monastery (KK025-015001-) at this location and suggests that instead there was a castle which was subsequently demolished to provide building material for Brookhill House, which even by 1839 was itself in ruins (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 25-6 (9-10)). Brookhill House does not survive above ground level, however, large blocks of granite and some cut-stone fragments were noted, during a field inspection in 1994, in the outbuildings and surrounding walls associated with the house. These appear to have come from a medieval building, though the nature of that building could not be ascertained. Overlooking the River Barrow which flows c. 75m to the E. A five-bay two-storey house over partly raised basement, having slightly advanced end bays to front and rear elevations, with a hipped double-pile slate roof. Rendered exterior with granite quoins. There are references to a Colonel Pierce Butler of Barrowmount who died in 1650 and William Grace of Barrowmount in 1669 (Edward Law, Kilkenny History, Miscellaneous Houses; http://homepage.eircom.net/~lawekk/HSESA.HTM, accessed 30 September 2010). The house is associated with the Gore family who are linked with Barrowmount since 1710 (ibid.) Bence-Jones (1983, 34) gives an early 18th-century date for Barrowmount House. However, according to Craig (1973, 91), the present house dates to the mid- to late 18th century. While the house does present as dating to the 18th century, it is possible that fabric from an earlier 17th-century house is incorporated or that a 17th-century house was located on or near the site of the present house.
