At a break between steep upper slopes and lower cultivated slopes on the W side of a small stream valley. Indicated as 'cave' on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map. This may be a natural cave or could be a souterrain. The 'cave' could not be identified with certainty when visited in 1987. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 3 June 2020 - KK014-048: Burial, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKK014-048----. Listed as 'Cemetery site' in the RMP (1996). A number of extended inhumations in unlined graves discovered in gravel debris during quarrying in 1971. The burials were in rows and were oriented E-W. The site was extremely disturbed and the exact number of burials was unclear. Finds included an iron knife and a decorated whetstone. A sample of human remains was dated to 1445+/- 40 BP or AD550-657. Black Castle (KK014-049----) lies c. 300m to the S and a church (KK014-050003-) and ecclesiastical enclosure (KK014-050001-) are c. 300m to the NE. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 70-72). Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 6 February 2013 - KK014-049: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKK014-049----. Set by a small stream in very marshy area at a point where a small N-S river valley narrows onto a near gorge. The castle commands the valley at this point. The sides of the valley rise steeply to the E, S and W, while to the N the valley opens out to a flat reclaimed floor. The Ordnance Survey letters (1839) record, 'part of the east side of a Castle called the Black Castle in the same townland; the wall was nine feet [c. 2.7m] thick' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 203). Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 269), describes it as, 'now a broken fragment, [which] was the residence of the Rochefords till the Cromwellian confiscations'. The 25-inch OS map depicts Black Castle as a roofless rectangular building (dims. c. 11m x c. 4.5m) orientated NE-SW, with gables to the NW and SE. In 1987 the only visible remains consisted of a massively thick wall sandwiched between two derelict farm buildings. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 21 December 2016 - KK014-050001: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKK014-050001-. On the flat floor of a small N-S stream valley, the sides of which rise quite steeply, in grassland. There are very poor views except N and S along the valley. The OS Letters (1839) describe, 'a large Rath in the Townland of Killeree from which the townland is said to have had its name. It is ninety yards [82m] in diameter, the mound about seven feet [2.1m] in height; it was surrounded by a trench, traces of which remain on the south east. The inside is nearly level with the top of the mound. There are several little heaps of stones and thorns scattered over the surface and the neighbours affirm that these heaps mark the sites of stone builidings and say farther that there are three of the Kings of Ireland buried in it, whence the name Kileree or the Cell of the Kings' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 203 (67-8). Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 268-9) gives a translation of the townland name as 'Cill Láithrigh, the Church of Laithreach' and states that the, 'ancient name of the townland was Laithreach, which appears as "Lavertach" in a document of 1247. The Kyle, or church, has long disappeared'. The enclosure consists of a large, roughly circular area (int. diam. c. 85m) defined by earthen bank (Wth c. 4m; int H 1.5m; ext H 2.5m) except at the NE where it has been removed. There is no evidence of the fosse or 'trench' mentioned by the OS Letters in the SE quadrant, but it may have been filled in. The entrance (Wth 4m) in the SE quadrant is likely to be original. There are raised features in the interior but no pattern could be discerned. It is possibly that these are the remains of an early medieval church (KK014-050003-) and other buildings (KK014-050002-) and that the surrounding enclosure has ecclesiastical associations. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
