A large ringfort (diam. c. 60m) with trees growing around the perimeter and scrub in the interior. The edge of the SW-W sector has been encroached upon by plots associated with houses immediately S and NW of the monument. A public road runs roughly NW-SE between the ringfort and the medieval church (KK020-045001-) and graveyard (KK020-045002-) which is immediately SW of the road. Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 366) describes it as, 'a very fine moat-shaped rath, probably the "Black Rath" from which the church was formerly named'. On a W-facing slope with limited views due to trees and rise in ground level. Centrally placed within a raised, roughly triangular graveyard (KK020-045002-). The church is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran in ‘Madackstowne’ townland (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). It is also indicated on the Down Survey parish map of Blackrath and St Martins and the accompanying terrier describes, ‘on Maddockstowne…the walls of a Church’ and lists ‘S[i]r Edm[on]d Blanchfield’ as the proprietor in 1640 (NLI MS720). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 366) the church was dedicated to, The Blessed Virgin, under the title of her Nativity (Sept. 8)’ and was the prebendal church of Blackrath, now known as Maddockstown. An undivided rectangular church (int. dims. 10.5m E-W x 4.25m N-S) constructed of sandstone with some limestone and shale also in evidence. It has a partial external base-batter. Present remains comprise the W gable, S wall with external buttress at W end, N wall and ruinous E gable, with collapsed masonry in the interior. The church was entered through a doorway, now marked by breach (Wth 2m), at the W end of the S wall. An arch stone fragment located at NE end of the graveyard was probably part of the doorway surround. Only one window survives, a single-light flat-headed window (int. dims. 1m x 0.4m) with glazing-bar holes in E end of S wall. There are traces of a window embrasure in the W gable, described by Carrigan (ibid.) as, ‘a tall, very narrow, damaged window, with a very narrow splay, high up in the west gable’. On a W-facing slope with limited view due to trees and rise in ground level. The medieval church of Maddockstown (KK020-045001-) is located in the centre of this roughly triangular-shaped graveyard (max. dims. c. 40m E-W x c. 35 N-S), consisting of a raised area enclosed by a stone wall. A public road runs along the NE side, with the entrance to the graveyard along this wall. Another roadway, now a pedestrian lane, runs along the NW side and formerly led to a 17th-century watermill (KK020-046----) on the River Nore, now disused. There are no visible gravestones earlier than 18th century. A medieval font (KK020-045003-) is located within the graveyard, immediately S of the entrance. Associated with the medieval church of Maddockstown (KK020-045001-) and located within its graveyard (KK020-045002-), adjacent to the entrance. The font was first recorded by Robertson (1894, 192), at which time it was described as being, ‘long ago broken into two pretty equal parts’. The graveyard was tidied c. 1950 and the font was rediscovered consisting of, ‘the entire bowl, though broken in many pieces, but only half of the base and none of the supporting pillars’ (Anon. 1960, 51). The Kilkenny Archaeological Society commissioned its restoration by Tom MacDonald, a monumental sculptor who reconstructed the central pedestal, supporting pillars and half of the base (Pike 1989, 577; O’Kelly 1969, 65). The font is square (ext. dims. 0.71m x 0.71m; H 0.35m) in plan with a circular basin (diam. 0.45m) and centrally placed drain-hole. All four sides are decorated with Gothic flutes and the top of two of the angles have carved heads in relief. The corners of the upper surface of the font are decorated with incised intertwined vine leaves. The surviving portion of the base (originally square in plan 0.65m x 0.65m) is decorated with four raised concentric circular mouldings. The whole now rests on a concrete plinth. According to Doyle (1985, 155), this mill, ‘which probably dates from the 16th century. It had been converted to a dwelling house, but it is now partly roofless. It is situated beside a long dried-up mill stream. It is a narrow building, rather low for a two-storey house. The hole where the shaft of the mill wheel entered is still to be seen’. - Prims Cottage, miller's house, 1790–1810, Regional interest, registry number 12402008, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=KK&regno=12402008. Remains of flour mill complex, c.1800, including:(i) Detached three-bay single-storey mill manager's house with half-dormer attic. In use, 1902. Now in private residential use. Hipped gabled slate roof (gabled to half-dormer attic windows) with clay ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stack, timber bargeboards to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble limestone walls with remains of unpainted roughcast lime render over. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, red brick dressings (originally concealed), timber lintels to ground floor (one shared), and two-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening with shared timber lintel, and timber panelled door. Set in grounds originally shared with Highrath Flour Mill perpendicular to road with random rubble limestone boundary wall to perimeter of site.(ii) Detached three-bay two-storey outbuilding. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, iron flue, rendered coping, and no rainwater goods on squared limestone eaves. Random rubble limestone walls with traces of unpainted roughcast lime render over. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone shallow sills, concealed red brick dressings, timber lintels, and timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening with timber lintel, and timber boarded door.
- Mill (water), 1765–1785, Regional interest, registry number 12402009, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=KK&regno=12402009. Flour mill complex, c.1775. In use as saw mill complex, 1902, including:(i) Detached five-bay four-storey building possibly originally with attic. Now in ruins. Pitched roof now gone with no rainwater goods surviving on ivy-clad squared rubble stone eaves. Random rubble limestone walls partly collapsed with dressed limestone quoins to corners. Camber-headed window openings with no sills, squared limestone voussoirs, and no fittings surviving. Single segmental arch culvert with squared limestone voussoirs. Set back from road in own grounds on bank of River Nore with overgrown grounds to site.(ii) Detached five-bay five-storey double-pile building with attic with single-bay five-storey side elevations continuing through single-bay five-storey linking bay into five-bay five-storey parallel range. Now in ruins. Pitched double-pile (M-profile) roofs now gone with no rainwater goods surviving on ivy-clad squared rubble limestone eaves. Random rubble limestone walls partly collapsed with dressed limestone quoins to corners, and sections of slate-hanging throughout. Camber-headed window openings (some square-headed window openings throughout) with no sills, squared limestone voussoirs (lintels to square-headed openings), and remains of timber casement windows.
