- LA019-013: Concentric enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLA019-013----. A subcircular area (diam. c. 35.6m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2.7m, int. H 0.4m, ext. H c. 1.2m) at E, S and W, and by an external fosse at S and W. Northern section destroyed. No evidence of original entrance. Aerial photograph (GB90.CM.16) shows a clump of trees, the remnant of the earthwork recorded on the first edition OS 6” map, surrounded by a widely spaced concentric fosse delimiting a much larger curvilinear enclosure with evidence of sub-divisions and more characteristic of an ecclesiastical enclosure. The outer enclosure extends both sides of the field boundary and the north-eastern extremity of the enclosure is cut by the modern road. A new house appears to impinge on the northern portion of the enclosure. Could be at risk from further roadside development. First recorded as a positive cropmark in July 1990. The above aerial report has been compiled by Dr. G.F. Barrett and supplied to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. In gently undulating countryside. Church marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map standing in the centre of St. Bridget's graveyard (LA019-014002-). Ballintubbert Church of Ireland Church may have been built on the site of or incorporated part of an earlier medieval church (Comerford 1883-6, vol. 3, 127). The medieval church of Ballintubbert is depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Ballyadams Barony. The terrier of the Down Survey parish of Fontstowne recorded that there was in 'Ballintubber and Moniscribban a slated House in repaire and an old ruined church'. The late 13th century ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Leighlin lists the rectory of 'Fonston alias Ballintobber' which was valued at £10 2s (Comerford 1883-6, vol. 1, 239). No surface remains visible of this medieval church in the vicinity of the 19th century C of I church. However, located 16m to the E of the C of I church in the E quadrant of the graveyard are the low wall footings of a rectangular building (int. dims. 7.95m E-W; 5.5m N-S; wall T 1m) roughly aligned E-W which could be the partial remains of the medieval church of Ballintubbert that is indicated on the Down Survey map. The ivy-clad NE angle of this building survives is the only section that remains upstanding to a height of 1m above the present graveyard surface. The E wall survives upstanding for a length of 1.2m and the N wall for a distance of 0.55m. Uninscribed grave-markers in graveyard (LA019-014002-) and holy well (LA019-014003-) 25m to SE of St. Bridget's Church. Comerford recorded that the 'Protestant Church of Ballintubber occupies the site of the primitive parochial church; this is evidenced by the fact of Catholics being still interred in the burial ground (LA019-014002-) attached to it' (Comerford 1883-6, vol. 3, 127). In gently undulating countryside. Possible early graveyard here (Comerford 1883-6, 127) which today consists of a roughly square-shaped area (int. dims. 66m N-S; 73m E-W) enclosed by a post-medieval stone wall with St. Bridget's Church in centre of graveyard possibly standing on the site of the medieval church of Ballintubbert (LA019-014001-) although the wall footings of a building in the E quadrant of the graveyard may be the remains of the medieval church. Some uninscribed grave markers visible, the remaining memorials date from the 18th century onwards. In the 19th century Comerford recorded that the 'Protestant Church of Ballintubber occupies the site of the primitive parochial church (LA019-014001-); this is evidenced by the fact of Catholics being still interred in the burial ground attached to it' (Comerford 1886, vol. 3, 127). St. Bridget's holy well (LA019-014003-) located in SE quadrant of graveyard. A semi-circular-shaped scarp visible in the E quadrant of the graveyard may represent the remains of an earlier graveyard boundary feature which became obsolete when the graveyard area was extended and a new boundary wall was constructed to the S and E which included the holy well (LA019-014003-). The holy well may have originally been located outside the earlier smaller graveyard as defined by this low semi-circular shaped scarp. The wall footings (wall T 0.5m) of a small stone structure representing the remains of private burial place can be seen in the E quadrant of the graveyard in close proximity to the larger stone building. The holy well at Ballintubbert may have given its name to the townland. Ballintubbert is the anglicised version of Baile an Tiobraid meaning the 'town of the well or spring'. In the 17th century Ballintubbert was also known as Fontstowne which is possibly derived from the presence of the spring well. Ballintubbert Church was located in the medieval parish of Fontstowne as recorded in the 17th century Down Survey. Not marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map but depicted as St. Brigid's Well on the revised 1906 edition of the OS 25-inch map. In gently undulating countryside. Holy well located in SE quadrant of Ballintubbert graveyard (LA019-014002-) 29m SE of St. Bridget's Church which is possibly built on the site of a medieval church (LA019-014001-). In 1990 the Archaeological Survey of Ireland described the holy well as consisting of 'three courses of stones and the west and east with a lot of loose, smaller stone in the south. Entrance way (L c. 1.5m, Wth c. 1m, D c. 0.75m) with three steps at the north and is defined by a number of larger stones on either side' (SMR File 15/08/1990) Known locally as St Brigid's Well. A second spring well is located 14m to the SE as depicted on the 25-inch OS map. In recent times the area around the well became waterlogged and a small pond was formed obscuring the stone structure defining the well. Recently the area around the well has been cleared away and the structure around the well is now visible once more. The natural spring well is partially enclosed by a semi-circular stone wall which is open to N with access down to the well at N via three stone steps flanked by a low line of stones on either side of the steps. No evidence of any votive offerings in the vicinity of the well and no pattern is held at this well.
