Marked on the Down Survey barony map. Known as Milltown Ballyvuilling castle. Situated in undulating countryside, in farmyard. It consisted of a square tower with levelled outworks and a modern dwelling-house built against it (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907 vol. 1, 302-03). A wall (L c. 29m, H c. 2.9m, wall T c.0.9m) built of roughly coursed rubble limestone, running NW to SE are the only remains. Described in the History of the Queens County as 'One square tower constitutes the principal remnant of this structure. Most of the outworks, consisting of walls and earthen mounds are now levelled. Stagnant fishponds occupy the site of its surrounding fosse. The building was placed by the side of a shallow rivulet, and it is well sheltered by hills in every direction, except towards the south. The situation of the castle seemed more calculated for domestic comfort, than for defensive warfare. A modern dwelling-house has been attached to it' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907 vol. 1, 303). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Described in 1907 as 'the ruins of a castle (LA025-020001-) also called Ballyvuilling which seems to have been of considerable antiquity; but its history is not known. One square tower constitutes the principal remnant of this structure. Most of the outworks, consisting of walls and earthen mounds, are now levelled. Stagnant fishponds occupy the site of its surrounding fosse. The building was placed by the side of a shallow rivulet, and it is well sheltered by hills in every direction, except towards the south. The situation of the castle seemed more calculated for domestic comfort, than for defensive warfare. A modern dwelling-house has been attached to it' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 303). Today there are no visible surface remains of these earthworks which appear to be the remains of a possible levelled bawn enclosing Milltown Castle. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In tillage. A roughly square enclosure (dims. c. 42m E-W; c. 38m N-S on the E side, tapering to c. 34m on the W side) visible as a cropmark on Google Earth (imagery date 28 June 2018), identified and reported by Simon Dowling. The enclosure is indicated as a small field or haggard associated with a farm on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map and subsequent revision. While the farmyard and all the immediately surrounding small fields have been levelled, only the square enclosure is clearly defined as a cropmark, suggesting it had a much deeper fosse. It is possible that this enclosure pre-dates the farmyard and in the 18th or 19th century was subsequently incorporated into it. Located in a relatively level location (c. 95m OD) in a gently undulating landscape now characterised by tillage and pastoral farming, and on land that slopes very gently from NE-SW towards the Fuer River c. 730ms to SW. Sited towards the centre of a field currently in use for tillage purposes (Apple Maps; accessed July 2023). Located c. 720m NE of the remains of a castle (LA025-020001-) adjacent to a bridge over the Fuer River, and c. 1.4kms SW of a church (LA026-003----) and associated graveyard (LA026-003001-) sited at Rahin to the NW periphery of the village of Ballylynan. This enclosure is faintly visible as a cropmark on Apple Maps (accessed July 2023) and on Google Earth (June 2018) imagery of the area. It consists of an irregular oval feature (est. ext. dims c. 76.8m N-S x 42.5m E-W) that is defined by a ditch (est. Wth c. 2.4m) that can largely be traced along its entire circuit on the Apple Maps imagery (accessed July 2023). No definitive evidence for an entrance gap although the ditch is less clear to the centre of the E arc with a faint possible cropmark trackway running away from the site to the E. Compiled by: T.J.
