- LE033-016: Megalithic tomb - portal tomb, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLE033-016----. Situated on a gentle SW-facing slope. An overgrown chamber (dims 1.65m N-S; 0.9m E-W) formed by two portal-stones (max. H 1.45m) at N with one visible sidestone and a backstone, is set into the N end of a rectangular cairn (dims c. 27.5m N-S; c. 7.5m E-W; max. H c. 1m) whose W side has been truncated at the N end by a NE-SW field bank. A large slab (dims c. 1.2m x 1.05m; max. T 0.4m) near the chamber may be part of the original roofstone. Within a dried-up lake that is represented on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a subcircular lake (dims c. 250m E-W; c. 200m N-S), but the lake is likely to have been much bigger originally (dims c. 800m E-W; c. 300m N-S). Local information suggested that there might have been a crannog towards the N edge of the lake where a clump of trees grew. No evidence to confirm this is visible at ground level. It remains undisturbed within a coniferous forest. The habitation site (LE033-064----) is c. 80m to the SE. Located in the now reclaimed Aghavas Lough, which is represented as a subrectangular lake (dims c. 250m E-W; c. 200m N-S) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but which could have been much larger (dims c. 800m E-W; c. 300m N-S). Forestry works in 1999 revealed artifacts including a quernstone (Buckley 1999), which was reported by Brendan Lynch. A record (99E0555) of features revealed by the drains was made (O’Sullivan and Lyttleton 1999). Two layers of lake marl overlay an oval charcoal-rich layer with ash lenses (dims 17m N-S; 11m E-W; max. T 0.5m), which in turn overlay a layer of peat. Some vertical posts and stones from a paved area were recorded, but no large structural base of trees and stones. Artifacts recovered include crannog ware, suggesting a late medieval date for a lakeside habitation site (13th to 16th century AD). It was subsequently planted with trees.
