- LE030-038: Ritual site - holy well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLE030-038----. Situated In a fold on a gentle S-facing slope, with a NNW-SSE stream c. 6m to the E. This well is dedicated to St. Patrick and is described as such on the 1835 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It was described in 1991 (SMR file) as an overgrown rectangular stone-lined trough (dims 1m x 0.8m) and there was local knowledge of veneration and a rag bush. In 2000 it was conserved as a circular stone-lined well (diam. 1.1m; D 0.6m) with a patio to the E, and the well is approached by steps from the S. An overflow channel emerges from under the patio and debouches into a circular stone basin or trough (ext. diam. 0.54m; H 0.35m), from where it continues SE to the stream. The conserved well is within a D-shaped enclosure (dims 13m E-W; 12m N-S) which is defined by the stream at E, a field bank at N and a slightly curving stone wall S-W. A path leads to the public road c. 110m to the W. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. The overflow channel from St Patrick’s holy well (LE030-038----) runs into a small stone circular basin or trough (ext. diam. 0.54m; H 0.35m; int. diam. 0.41m; D 0.25m), the rim of which is broken at one side to allow the stream to flow out at a lower level and continue to a NNW-SSE stream. Located towards the N end of a N-S drumlin ridge. This is a grass-covered circular area (diam. 40.5m N-S; 40.3m E-W; int. diam. 34.3m E-W; 33.5m N-S) defined by a round-topped, steep-sided earthen bank (Wth of base 5.5-8m; int. H 0.7-1m; ext. H 2.8-3.4m) which is planted with coniferous trees, and an external fosse (Wth of top 6.6-9.m; Wth of base 2-3.5m; ext. D 0.4m S-W to 0.9m at N). An outer bank (Wth of base 2m; max. int. H 1.5m; ext. H 0.7m) exists only at S and is probably a field bank as it is separated from the fosse by a berm (Wth 1m). The entrance (Wth of base 4m) and causeway (Wth of top 3m) are at E (max. ext. diam. 57m N-S; 61.5m E-W).
