- LE028-065001: Ritual site - holy well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLE028-065001-. This is St. Patrick’s well and it is located in mixed woodland at the bottom of a W-facing slope. It is described as ‘Tober Patrick’ in gothic lettering on the 1835 and 1911 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular hollow (diam. 1m; D 0.7m at E to 1.5m at W) which is dry and with no evidence of stonework, apart from two cement steps at the N side leading to it. A memorial stone (H 0.6m; Wth 0.38m; T 0.07m) with an inscription and the date 1775 is beside the steps. A tree at the well, probably the ash tree immediately to the S, served as a rag-tree in the 1930s, although there is no evidence of this in 2003. By the 1930s the memory of the pattern, which had been held at Tober Muire (LE028-065002-) c. 30m to the S between the 15th of August and the 8th September, was attached to St. Patrick’s Well, and Tober Mhuire was no longer remembered. Located in mixed woodland at the bottom of an E-facing slope. The name ‘Tober Murray’ on the OS 6-inch maps is properly Tober Mhuire – Mary’s Well (OSNB No. 84, 15), and there was a pattern at this well until c. 1800 (ibid.). However, the memory of veneration seems to have been transferred to Tober Patrick (LE028-065001-) c. 30m to the N by the 1930s, according to the Schools Manuscripts, for which see this web-page accessed on 12/04/2017: http://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4658426/4654168 This is a rectangular stone-lined well (dims 0.8m x 0.55m; D 0.7m) with a feature to the S consisting of ten moss-covered stone slabs (dims 0.2m x 0.2m; L 0.9m) laid on top of each other in pairs alternately N-S and E-W. This creates an openwork canopy (dims c. 1m x 1m; H 1.3m) that is closed at the top by a single slab (dims 0.8m x 0.7m). There is an empty masonry shrine for a statue (int. dims 0.4-0.8m; H 1.4m) 3m to the E. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Located in mixed woodland at the bottom of an E-facing slope, and just beside Tober Patrick holy well (LE028-065001-). It is described in gothic lettering on the 1835 and 1911 editions of the OS 6-inch maps as a ‘Standing Stone’. It is not a prehistoric antiquity but a small stone (Wth 0.38m; H. 0.6m; T 0.07m) set in the ground and bears an inscription which is now illegible apart from the date ‘1775’. The inscription was recorded in the 1830s (OSNB No. 84, 14) as ‘Pray for Mark Meuly by whom this cross was erected in honour of St. Patrick, 1775.’ It is recorded in the 1930s Schools’ Manuscripts as: ‘IHS Pray for the soul of Mark Meale by whom this stone was erected in honour to Saint Patrick 1775.’ For the Schools Manuscripts see this web-page accessed on 12/04/2017: http://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4658426/4654168 Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 13 April, 2017
