Located c. 50-60m from the S shore of Clooncoe Lough (dims c. 1.2km N-S; c. 200-250m E-W), it is depicted as an island an estate map (Wogan 1750, 26) and later OS maps. This is an overgrown circular feature (diam. 27.5m E-W; H 0.7m) with evidence of timber stake construction along the perimeter at NW. A stone pier at WNW is probably modern. A programme of radiocarbon dating undertaken by the Discovery Programme produced a date of 855 +- 20 BP (AD 1155-1248) from wood taken from the crannog (O’Conor and Fredengren 2019, 91). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). Situated on a rise in a low-lying, undulating landscape. The graveyard is not depicted on an eighteenth century estate map (Wogan 1750, 26) and it is described as a ‘Burying Ground’ on the OS 6-inch maps. This is a subcircular enclosure (int. dims 85m N-S; 69m E-W) defined by a masonry wall NW-NE and by an earthen bank topped with a collapsed stone wall elsewhere. It has headstones dating from the 18th century, some of whose inscriptions dating from 1777 were recorded in the 1930s (IFC: Schools Collections’ vol. 0214, 345-8). A small cross-inscribed stone (LE036-021006-) is in the graveyard. Outside the enclosure at SW are the foundations of a tower house (LE036-021003-) within a rath (LE036-021002-), and a Church of Ireland church which was built c. 1850-55 as a chapel for the Clements family of Lough Rinn (LE036-006----) is attached to the S. Archaeological supervision (00E0867) of the replacement of the perimeter with a masonry wall NE-SE demonstrated that it was a slight earth and stone bank and the stones had been thrown up from inside. However, it produced no dateable material (Meenan 2001, 2002). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated on a low-lying, undulating landscape outside the graveyard (LE036-021001-) at SW, but within a small subcircular rath (LE036-021005-). A ‘stone house' with a chimney is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Mohill at Farnaght, and the terrier or commentary mentions it again and lists Bryan Reynolds as the proprietor (See this web-page accessed on 12/12/2019: http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/history.html). He also owned land in eight other townlands in Cloone parish amounting to over 700 acres in total. Local information from the 1940s (SMR file) relates how the ruin was covered in a mound of clay until exposed by Lord Leitrim about the middle of the nineteenth century. The cairn surrounds the castle on every side but is greatest (at S: Wth of base 3.5m; H 1-1.2m) where the castle walls survive to the greatest height (2m) at E and S. The walls of a tower house (ext. dims c. 9m N-S; c. 6m E-W) are misinterpreted on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a church where the ruin is described as an ‘Oratory’. The S wall (H c. 2m) has a pointed doorway (Wth 0.93m; H 1.6m) at the centre and a severe base-batter. The doorway leads to a passage (L 2.4m N-S) in the thickness of the S wall with a newel or spiral stairs off it on the W side entered by a pointed doorway (Wth 0.67m; H 1.55m). From the passage there is direct access to the ground floor (int. dims 4.3m N-S; 3.3m E-W), but just the base of the walls survive at N. See the attached views taken from the SE _1 and SW _2. Situated on a low-lying, undulating landscape. It is not depicted on an eighteenth century estate map (Wogan 1850, 26) but is represented on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a D-shaped, scrub-covered area (dims 36m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 2.5-3.5m; int. H 0.2-0.8m; ext. H 1.8-2.2m) WNW-NE and SE-SW, which is reduced to a scarp (at W: Wth 1m; H 1.8m; at E: Wth 2.5m; H 1.5m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or recognisable original entrance. The straight side is at E where the perimeter is covered by the cairn around the tower house (LE036-021003-). The graveyard (LE0356-021002-) is just to the NE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 7 January 2020 - LE036-021006: Cross-inscribed stone, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLE036-021006-. A small grave-marker (dims 0.28-0.32m x 0.07-0.1m; L 0.92m) has a latin cross (H 0.25m; span 0.22m plus) composed of three deeply incised lines on one face. This cross is truncated by the straight edge of the stone on one side and the stone also has a latin cross (H 0.12m; span 0.13m) incised with single lines and expanded terminals centrally placed at the narrower top of the same face. Beneath this cross are incised the initials MM. What might be an early cross-slab was reused as a late grave-marker and is now resting on a grave. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
