Situated on a gentle W-facing slope with the River Shannon c. 80m to the W. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) is depicted on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’. This is a grass-covered oval earth and stone mound (dims 42.3m N-S; 38.6m E-W; H 0.8m at E to 3.3m at W) with signs of recent quarrying along the perimeter at NE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). Situated on a gentle E-facing slope. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 33-5), and later fully resolved (E003301) as a part of Moher 1, which is an unmapped nineteenth century limekiln sitting over a Late Bronze Age fulacht fia (LE037-011002-), which in turn is sitting over this Early Bronze Age fulacht fia. The lime-kiln consisted of an earthen mound (dims 9.2m E-W; 7.4m N-S; H 2.2m) with a flue opening on the W side. The earliest feature uncovered is a ring of stakes (dims 1.44m x 0.72m) with fragments of brushwood, which may have been an outline for a pit. There were re-deposited natural clays with charcoal inclusions in the surrounding peat. A deposit of unburned limestone (dims 2.3m x 1.7m) was nearby. (Collins and O’Connor 2008, 14) Over this initial activity a fully developed mound of broken and burnt stone (diam. 7.2m x 7m; T 0.25m) developed around a rectangular trough (dims 2.1m x 1.45m; D 0.2-0.65m) N-E-S. The trough was partly lined with planks on the W, N and E sides, and five planks covered the N part of the floor. The planks were held in place by five stakes. Three fills included burnt stone, peat and sand, and a sample from the basal layer produced a C14 date of 3038 +- 43 BP (1420-1130 cal. BC), possibly representing its last use. Sticky clays lined the trough and two mossy organic layers beneath its floor produced a C14 date of 3116 +- 44 BP (1500-1260 cal. BC), perhaps from its construction phase. A layer of peat with wood and charcoal directly beneath the mound produced a C14 date of 3207 +- 51 (1610-1390 cal. BC). Situated on a gentle E-facing slope. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 during 2005 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 33-5), and later fully resolved (E003301) as a part of Moher 1, which is an unmapped nineteenth century limekiln sitting over this Late Bronze Age fulacht fia, which in turn is sitting over an Early Bronze Age fulacht fia (LE037-011001-). A layer of peat (max. D 0.23m), indicating a hiatus in use, intervened between the mound of the earlier fulacht fia and a re-development in the Late Bronze Age. This mound (dims 8.6m x 7m) was a spread of decayed and fire-cracked stones overlying another layer of burnt stones which were less fragmented (dim. 3.2m; T 0.3m). This overlay a rectangular trough (dims 1.22m x 1.06m; D 0.14m), which was cut into the natural on three sides, but was open at SE. There was a post-hole in each corner of the trough, and one produced a C14 date of 2812 +- 46 (1120-840 BC), but timbers from the lining may have been removed after its final use. Situated on a fairly level landscape. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 36), and later fully resolved (E003304) as Moher 4. A small pit (diam. 0.55-0.6m; D 0.15m) filled with a grey stony clay overlay a post-hole (dims 0.2m x 0.1m; D 0.21m) filled with a grey clay and charcoal which produced a C14 date of 1284 +- 30 BP (660-780 Cal. AD). A subrectangular pit (dims 1.2m x 0.8m; max. D 0.49m) just 0.4m to the N contained three clay fills with varying amounts of stone and charcoal inclusions. Four pieces of flint were recovered from this pit and two pieces of chert debitage were recovered from the topsoil. Another subrectangular pit (dims 1.75m x 0.9m; D 0.35m) (26) with two clay fills was c. 20m to the SE and could belong to the same era. Situated on a fairly level landscape. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 37), and later fully resolved (E003305) as a part of Moher 5, which was only partly excavated as most of it lay outside the road-take. It consisted of a spread of broken and burnt stone (dims 4m x 3.7m, max. D 0.12m) overlying peat (dims 4m x 3.7m; T 0.13) which in turn overlay a spread of silty clay over the natural. A sample from the peat produced a C14 date of 3916 ± 82BP (2620-2140 cal. BC), on the cusp of the Late Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age. Burnt mound (LE035-013001-) is c 12m to the WNW.
