Situated in woodland c. 25m from the E shore of Lough Rinn, which is described as ‘Clam Lough’ on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map where the castle is depicted as what might be two towers. The house of Mael Sechlainn MacRaighnaill was attacked by Tadhg MacRaighnall in 1473 when fourteen men were killed (AC), and this is thought to be at Lough Rinn (Mc Carthy 1989-90, 126). It is described as a castle ruin on an estate map (Wogan 1750, 22), and the terrier or commentary suggests that it might be easily repaired. This might have been done as the remains have been conserved. The castle is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 10m N-S; 7m E-W) with battered walls and rounded corners, surviving to H of c. 7m, except for much of the S and E walls (H 1.5-3m; T 2m). A destroyed doorway (Wth 0.8m) towards the W end of the S wall leads through a lobby to the ground floor, which has the remains of an E-W barrel vault and a simple light in every wall except the S. A mural stairs rises eastwards from the lobby. The structure was illustrated by Daniel Grose in the late eighteenth century (Stalley 1991, 184-6). (McDermott 2019, 121-2) See the attached section from the Down Survey barony map (N at right) reproduced courtesy of the National Library of Ireland The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Located in scrub on a shelf at the N end of the E shore of Lough Rinn. A structure described as a ‘Giants Grave’ is depicted at the N end of an Avenue only on an estate map (Wogan 1750, 22). The avenue is on a N-S ridge, which at the N end merges into a drumlin. There is no other information, and no antiquity is visible at ground level in the vicinity of a road junction, although a precise location cannot be provided. Located c. 70m from the NE shore of Errew Lough, an oval lake (dims c. 900m NNW-SSE; c. 500m WNW-ESE), which is on the N-S Cloone River, also known in this area as the Lurga River. This is an overgrown circular and stony island (diam. 25m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW; H 1.8m) with a prominent cairn (diam. 14m) which is partly modern at the centre. Many timber stakes are visible in the water around the perimeter and a slight causeway survives on the landward side at NE. The rath (LE036-003----) is on the shore immediately adjacent, c. 120m to the ENE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Located on a slight rise on the NE shore of Lough Errew, opposite the crannog (LE036-004----), which is c. 120m to the WSW. It is described as a ‘Danish Fort’ on an estate map (Wogan 1750, 22). This is an overgrown oval area (dims 40.5m N-S; 32m E-W; int. dims 37m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 6m; int. H 0.7m; ext. The original entrance was not identifiable. Archaeological monitoring (03E1761) in an extensive area to the NW produced no related material in the immediate vicinity (Read 2004, 2006). This is only the S end of a larger oval lake (dims c. 600m NNE-SSW; c. 270m) as represented on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map. An oval island (dims c. 30m E-W; c. 15m N-S) is represented on the 1835 and 1907 editions of the map. No archaeological feature was visible at the location in 1991 (SMR file) in the marsh, but this area had largely been reclaimed by 2012 (OSAP). Located on a low N-S ridge between Lough Rinn c. 280m to the W and Lough Errew on the Cloone River c. 200m to the E. The Clements family were not amongst the original settlers in the Leitrim plantation of 1620-2 (Mac Cuarta 1999), but Nathaniel Clements (1705-c. 1800), a grandson of Daniel Clements who received a land grant at Rathkenny, Co. Cavan under the Cromwellian settlement, was the third of four sons born to Robert Clements (1664-1722) and his wife, Elizabeth, a daughter of General Theophilius Sandford of Moyglare, Co. Meath. A family connection to the Irish Treasury and his marriage in 1730 to Hannah Gore, a niece of Sir Ralph Gore, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons (1729-33), afforded Nathaniel copious opportunities to invest in land. He acquired Lord Boyne’s extensive estate in Donegal in the 1740s, the Mohill estate of the Croftons in 1749, and the Glenboy estate in north Leitrim in 1754. He went on to purchase the estate and town Manorhamilton in 1759, creating the largest landholding in the county. (Malcomson 2019, 355-60) By 1760 Nathaniel is said to have accumulated 85,000 acres, principally in Donegal, Leitrim and Cavan, and had a rental income of £6,000 (Lodge 1789, vol. 2, 577-8). He commissioned a survey by William Wogan of his land at Lough Rinn in 1750, which is now in the National Library of Ireland, possibly with the intention of living there but a house was not built until the next century. His son Robert became the first Earl of Leitrim in 1795. Before the house was built there was an ‘old stable’ here according to Wogan’s map (1750, 22). Once the house was built in 1833 for Robert, Viscount Clements, probably to a design by William Burn, it became the principal residence of the family. The house is a Tudor-Revival house, and is a seven-bay, two storey over basement house with large bay windows at the ground floor. It was extended in 1889 to a design of Sir Thomas Drew for Col. H. T. Clemens by the addition of an east wing. There is no evidence of a building older than the 1830s, and the house is now a hotel. The island is depicted on an estate map (Wogan 1750, 22), and it is described as ‘Crane Island’ on later OS maps. In 1847, when the lake levels were lowered, two dug-out canoes and a manacle were found at a crannog, probably this one, and a bronze arrow and spearhead were found in the vicinity of the same site (Wood-Martin 1886, 242).
