- LE002-015001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLE002-015001-. Close to the S shore of Lough Melvin. Thought to be the site of the early church of Doiremelle, which was founded by Tigernach of Killeagh c. 800 AD as a nunnery for his mother, St. Mella (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 380), but this is the result of confusion with the church at Derryvella, Co. Tipperary (TS048-035001-). This church is probably a medieval chapel that served the local population using the nearby crannog and tower houses. The church is a rectangular structure (int. dims 10.95m E-W; 5.56m N-S) of randomly coursed semi-ashlar sandstone masonry walls (max. Wth 1m; max. H 5m at E) with dressed quoins. It survives almost complete, except the N wall which is largely reduced to a cairn. There is a destroyed doorway (Wth 1.4m; surviving H 1.9m) towards the W end of the S wall and a destroyed light towards its E end. Much of the S wall fell during 2016. The E window is a single light (Wth 0.37m; H c. 2m). The W gable is the E wall of a tower house (LE002-015005-) that stood immediately to the W. There is a record of a decorated face corbel (Davies 1946, 78) which could not be found. A low earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.9m) 21m to the E, a scarp (H 1.8m) down to the shore on the N and a slight bank to the W form an enclosure (LE002-015003-) (dims c. 45m E-W; c. 20-25m N-S) around the church but there is no evidence of burial. A small square building (LE002-015002-) (int. dims c. 3m x c. 3m) c. 15m SE of the church is represented by a single wall (H 2m) and a pile of rubble. The crannog (LE002-014001-) with the tower house (LE002-014002-) is c. 100m offshore. The S wall of the church fell in the autumn of 2016. Close to the S shore of Lough Melvin. A wall (L 7m N-S; H c. 4.5m) with a base-batter on the E side has a lintelled embrasure (Wth 0.82m; H 0.7m) for a single light on the W side towards the N end at ground level. The quoins are missing but this wall formed the E wall of a castle before it was re-used as the W wall of the church (LE002-015001-) whose N and S walls are not bonded with it. Marked as a subrectangular hachured feature only on the 1907 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated towards the bottom of a NE-facing slope at the S shore of Lough Melvin. It was described in the 1940s (SMR file) as a rectangular area with rounded corners, which was defined by the lake-shore at N and principally by a fosse or moat ‘7 feet wide at W to 11 feet wide at E (Wth c. 2-3.3m)’ that had a depth of ‘3 feet 6 inches generally to 5 feet at E (D c. 1-1.5m)’. An internal bank had been leveled at S but rose steeply ‘5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet 6 inches (H c. 1.7-2m)’ from the bottom of the moat at E and W. However, its internal height was barely ‘6 inches to 1 foot 6 inches (int. H c. 0.15-0.45m)’. The monument has now been removed, but is visible as a grass-covered area (dims c. 40m NE-SW; c. 30m NW-SE) rising slightly above the general ground level. An earthen bank (Wth 4.2m; H 0.75m) with slight traces of an external fosse or moat survives at one point on the NW side. The church (LE001-015001-) is c. 50m to the W and the crannog (LE002-014001-) is c. 100m to the NNW. Towards the top of a rise on a NE-facing slope and c. 130m from the SW shore of Lough Melvin. Grass-covered circular area (int. diam. 21.5m E-W; 19.5m N-S) defined by a stone spread with intermittently visible facing-stones (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.2m; ext. 0.4m) E-SW which is reduced to a stony scarp (H 0.4m at W to 1.1m at NE) elsewhere. The original entrance is not identified.
