Annagh Church was described in 1840 as following; ‘Situated in the north part of Annagh townlands, to the north of the road running through same, are the ruins of Annagh Old Church. The walls occupy about 60 [18.3m] by 20 feet [6.1m] and are about 10 feet [3m] high. A burial place lies here‘ (OSL Vol. 2, 443). The church was described in 1907 as following; 'In the townland of Annagh there stands a ruined church in good preservation. It measures internally 46 feet [14m] by 18 feet [5.5m]. The east window is two-light ogee-headed, divided by a mullion still in position. On the south side, near the east end, there is a similar single-light window. There is a window in the west gable choked up with ivy, and there appear to be no windows in the north wall. The door is in the south wall, and is a pointed arch, 6 feet 2 inches [1.88m] high, and 3 feet 6 inches [1m] wide. On the right-hand side going in is a curious holy-water stoup, hollowed out of one of the stones in the wall. It has two semicircular pointed openings, one in the doorway for those entering, the other in the church for those leaving. In the south side there is a piscina, 1 foot 11 inches [0.58m] wide, 1 foot 5 inches [0.43m] deep, and 1 foot 5 inches [0.43m] high, which has in its floor a shallow, circular basin 9½ inches [0.25m] in diameter. There is a similar smaller recess in the east end. The building, which is the only one now standing in the parish, is surrounded by a very small graveyard, in which the oldest dated tomb is one of 1781' (Seymour 1907, 365). Present remains consist of a late medieval undivided church (ext. dims. 16m E-S; 8.05m N-S; wall T 1m) entered though a pointed chamfered doorway located off centre to W in S wall with double ope pointed stoup visible in E splay of entrance embrasure. The walls of the church are built with random rubble with alternating long and short dressed quoins with base batter visible on E and W gable of church. Church lit by twin light ogee headed window in centre of E gable with single light ogee-headed window at E end of S wall. Flat headed window high up in centre of W gable, no windows in N wall of church. Middle spandrel of twin light E window decorated with ivy-leaf carvings, glazing groove visible on window jambs. Piscina at E end of S wall set into flat headed chamfered surround with octagonal-shaped basin and drain hole visible. Flat headed wall cupboard or aumbry in S end of E wall close to SE angle. Wooden beam holes at W end of N and S wall of church indicate remains of wooden floor at this end of church. Possible wooden floor of gallery or two storey priests residence. Good evidence for internal render on N wall of church. Chamfered limestone doorway decorated with stiff-leaf/ivy leaf carvings of late medieval date visible on chamfer stop and jambstone. Cross-marks incised into surface of punch dressed jambs of doorway appear to be original and may represent mason's marks. Good evidence of wicker centring on the underside of the arch of the doorway embrasure. Neolithic cave burial described in 1992 by Raghnall Ó Floinn, National Museum of Ireland, as following; 'The site was discovered accidentally while stripping topsoil in advance of blasting at a limestone quarry. In the course of this work the digger dislodged a large stone exposing a cavern in which human skulls were visible. Excavations were carried out over a period of 2 weeks in March 1992 and a further week in May. The site is located on the slope of a low hill at a height of c. 200 feet OD with extensive views to the north and east The site consisted of an oval chamber 4.5m long and 2.5m wide with its long axis running east-west. The cavern had developed along a natural fault line which was visible in the roof. This had been blocked by a pillar-like slab 1 m in length. In all, 3 complete human burials were recovered (all apparently adult males) and portions of a 4th. These were placed around the walls of the cavern at its western end. In addition cremated bone, some of it human, occurred in 2 separate locations. Associated with these remains were 2 complete vessels, substantial portions of 1, possibly 2, others and small fragments of another undecorated vessel. Burial I: This consisted of a crouched inhumation. Incorporated into the limewash which extended over the whole area of the torso were substantial sherds of decorated bowl, apparently dislodged from its original position on a ledge above it. Sherds of a 2nd decorated vessel were found at the north end of the burial below the knees. Burial II: A crouched inhumation, the knees flexed, resting against the wall of the chamber. At the base of the spine, a flint discoidal knife was found and the head of a bone pin came from the soil to the west of the burial. Sherds of an undecorated vessel of coarse fabric came from the area of the skull. Burial III: This consisted of the disarticulated skeletal remains of a single individual. These bones appear to have slipped down from a narrow ledge to the north. Burial IV This consisted of a scatter of human bone over an area of 0.6m along the south side of the chamber, lying on the sloping fill of its floor. There were no large long bones, pelvises or skull. In and around these bones were small sherds of a coarse undecorated pottery vessel similar to sherds associated with Burial II. Two decorated pottery vessels were placed on a ledge above Burial I - a necked bowl of Drimnagh type and a simple round bottomed bowl. Some burnt animal bone and a cow tooth were placed between them. Fused to the vertical face of the ledge between these was a perforated antler tine' (www.excavations.ie). An account of this monument has been published in: Cahill, M. & Sikora, M. (2011) Breaking ground, finding graves- reports on the excavations of burials by the National Museum of Ireland, 1927-2006. vol. 1, 17-47. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 15 August 2012 - LI006-079001: Cave, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI006-079001-. On the NW slope of Annagh Hill with views to the N and E, between 50-60m above sea level. Ringfort (LI006-014----) located 300m to S, second ringfort (LI006-013----) located 320m to SW. The site is depicted as a small quarry to the S of a farm lane on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map with a lime kiln to the E. It is depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a ‘disused quarry’ with an exposed quarry face 120m long facing W and a lime kiln to the E. The OSi 6-inch Cassini (ed.) map illustrates the quarry as a long winding rock cut tunnel (c. L. 120m; Wth. 15m). Human remains were discovered in a cave during quarrying operations in February 1992 when a digger dislodged a large, pillar-like slab, revealing an opening 0.9m by 0.9m and exposing a cavern in which two skulls were visible. Rescue excavations were carried out in March and May of 1992 by Raghnall Ó Floinn (1992; License number 92E047). The following summary account is taken from Ó Floinn (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 17-18). The cave consisted of ‘an oval chamber, 4.5m long by 2.5m wide. The cavern had developed along a natural fault line that could be seen in the roof. The entrance (an opening in the cave roof) had been blocked by a pillar-like slab, 1.02m long by 0.38m wide by 0.22m in maximum width. The floor of the chamber sloped from E to W. The deepest part of the chamber was at its W end (H. 1m), and it was here that the principal burials occurred. During the course of the excavation it was necessary to remove part of the E end of the cavern to gain safe access to the chamber. The fill of the cave was a uniform dark brown loamy clay with stones of varying size up to 0.7m in length. ' Overall, remains of five adult males were recovered, at least two of whom had reached their sixth decade, an advanced age (Ó Donnabháin 2011). Associated with the three burials were two complete pottery vessels (a bipartite bowl and a globular bowl) and portions of two other vessels (a globular bowl and a plain shouldered vessel). Other artefacts recovered include a perforated red deer antler tine, a bone toggle, a bone point, a flint blade, a flint flake, a flint arrowhead and a flint discoidal knife. A small quantity of animal bone was also retrieved. Each of the five burials was radiocarbon dated to the Middle Neolithic, a date consistent with the pottery. A bear bone returned a Mesolithic date and likely represents residual material. The quarry and site of the excavated cave which no longer survives is visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. The quarry is also visible on the most recent Google Earth Orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. All of the orthoimages record the site after the phase of quarrying in 1992 (ext. dims. 60m NE-SW; 100m NW-SE) and indicate that quarrying has ceased at the site.
