Fulacht fia or a burnt mound was identified during archaeological testing by Audrey Gahan (Licence 97E0291) on the Adare to Annacotty N20/N21 Road Improvement Scheme (Gahan 1997). Miscellaneous pit features (LI012-139----) were also uncovered surrounding the fulacht fia. Excavated under licence No. 97E0092 ext. by Audrey Gahan (Gahan 1998). The results of the excavation were summarised as following; ‘The mound measures c. 15m x 13m and is slightly crescent-shaped. It was constructed of layers of heat-shattered stone, within charcoal-stained soils. Within the hollow area of the crescent, roughly on the northern side of the mound, a trough was uncovered. This measured c. 4m east-west and was 3.2m at its widest north-south. The trough was shelved or stepped, being 0.4m below present ground level, dropping to 0.7m at its deepest’ (www.excavations.ie 1997; 328, 1998; 380). On the level summit of a low ridge (37m OD), in dry pasture. Identified as a moated site in the environmental impact statement for the proposed N20/N21 Road Improvement Scheme. Monument forms part of a wider earthwork complex which is recorded in the SMR collectively as a deserted medieval settlement (LI021-025001-). Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Monument tested (Licence No. 96E0380) in March 1997 by James Eogan and described as a rectangular-shaped area (80m N-S; 48m E-W) defined by a low, rounded bank with an entrance in the SE corner (Eogan 1997). A slightly raised, level, rectangular platform (approx. 23.5m N-S; 19.5m E-W) occupies the NW quadrant of the interior. Eogan (ibid), investigated the W side of the monument which was to be directly impacted by the road scheme. The W boundary of the enclosure was found to consist of a bank with an inner ditch and two outer ditches. The bank and inner ditch contained glazed pottery dating to 13th-14th century (ibid). In December 1997, Paul Logue undertook a second phase of test excavation (Licence No. 99E0477) to examine the interior of the enclosure and the enclosing elements on the W side (Logue 1998, 1). Test trench A (2m x 2m) was excavated in the SW corner and revealed nothing of archaeological significance. Test trench B (2m x 2m) was excavated off-centre to W and uncovered a shallow, roughly circular-shaped pit (1m E-W; 0.9m N-S; D 0.25m) which was filled with a redeposited natural. Trench C was excavated in the NW quadrant and revealed a U-shaped ditch (Wth 2-3m; D 0.8m) running N-S and which was partially cut into the underlying bedrock. The main fill contained much animal bone and overlay a fill which contained glazed medieval pottery sherds of probable 13th/14th-century date. The bank was associated with medieval potsherds and accompanied by a contemporary U-shaped outer ditch running E-W. The outer ditch (Wth 2m; D 0.44m) was to the N of the bank. This outer ditch cut the fills of the earlier U-shaped ditch. On the basis of the two assessment excavations, this site is most likely to be some form of enclosure dating to the medieval period. In 1999, the W side of the site was fully excavated (Licence No 96E0380 ext.) by James Eogan in advance of road construction. The enclosure was found to be a two-phase construction. The Phase 1 enclosure (85m N-S; 50m E-W) was surrounded by a ditch (Wth 1.5m-3m; D 0.6m) which was cut through the underlying limestone bedrock in places. The Phase 2 enclosure involved the filling of the N ditch and the digging of a ditch parallel to it, some 15m further to N again, thereby extending the internal area of the enclosure. A causewayed entrance (outer Wth 2m) was midway along the W side of the Phase 1 enclosure. The entrance (Wth 1.5m) narrowed on the interior and was defined by two pairs of substantial postholes. A line of smaller postholes extended E-W across the enclosure from the N side of this entrance. This indicates that the space within the interior was subdivided by a wooden fence. Within the enclosure there was a clear difference in the intensity of ancient activity. Relatively few features were found in the southern part, while in the northern half a series of large pits was uncovered. Four were quarry pits that were broader than they were deep and were filled with stones. It is thought that originally these pits were dug to extract clay for building purposes, the stony fill resulting from the sorting on site of the material dug out of the pit. Three rubbish pits were found. They are deeper than they are broad and contained organic-rich fills. Two of these pits cut one of the quarry pits. No clear evidence for structures was found within the enclosure, nor were any hearths uncovered, although a considerable amount of ash had been dumped into the northern ditch of the Phase 1 enclosure. Approximately 40m to N north of the main enclosure, a series of ditches was uncovered during topsoil-stripping. These represent at least two phases of enclosure of which there was no surface trace. The Phase 1 enclosure (35m N-S) had an entrance gap (Wth 2m) midway along its W side, which was flanked by a pair of postholes. The Phase 2 enclosure was roughly the same size as the earlier one, although the enclosing ditch was less substantial. A series of pits were found within these enclosures and on excavation two were proven to be quarry pits, one was a substantial rubbish pit and there were other less substantial pits, one of which contained more than 100 oyster shells (ibid). Most of the features uncovered contained sherds of glazed medieval pottery which was identified as a local Adare ware and imported ceramics were identified as Saintonge green-glazed ware (C. Sandes, pers. comm.). A number of whittle tang and plain tang iron knives were found, one of which retained part of its wooden handle. A small iron slash hook was also recovered from the excavations. A decorated copper-alloy stick-pin and a simple copper-alloy ring brooch were found in one of the rubbish pits (ibid). A single-edged composite bone comb was found in the backfill of the Phase 1 enclosure ditch. These finds all suggest a date in the 13th-14th century for the occupation on this site. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Monument identified as a fulacht fiadh during monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the proposed route of the N20/N21 Limerick bypass. Monument excavated (Licence No. 99E0171) in 1999 by Ciara McManus and described as an oblong-shaped mound (L 17m; Wth 9m; H 0.35m) with a rectangular-shaped trough (2.1m NW-SE; 1m NE-SW; D 0.28m) having steep sides and a flat base, in the SW quadrant (McManus, 1999, 1-3, 5). Excavation of the mound revealed an accumulation of heat-shattered limestone stones and charcoal-rich soil. An oval-shaped pit (2m NE-SW; 0.14m NW-SE; D 1.2m) was found 1.3m to N of the trough (McManus 1999, 3). The S half of the pit had a stepped side, while the N sides were more vertical. It had been filled by a number of deposits of burnt and shattered limestone rocks, along with a number of silt deposits. A few small fragments of animal bone were recovered from these fills, along with two fragments of unworked wood. Twelve stake-holes were excavated around the E side of the pit which was the most gradual (McManus 1999, 4). There was no discernible pattern to the stake-holes in plan, except for a possible double line running N-S along the edge of the pit. Due to disturbance by modern drains on the W side of the pit, it was not possible to confirm whether there was a corresponding set of post-holes there. It is suggested that these stake-holes represented the remains of either a windbreak or a structure spanning the width of the pit. Monument is not visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 or on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. The site described as an isolated trough was excavated in 1999 by Mary Deevy under licence No. 99E0459 and her results were summarised as following; 'The site is in Attyflin townland, c. 9km south-west of Limerick City, east of the N20. The site was uncovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil-stripping before road construction on the N20/N21 Adare to Annacotty road scheme. A rescue excavation was carried out over three-and-a-half weeks in August-September 1999. The site was close to marshy ground within which a fulacht fiadh (see No. 479 below) (LI021-183----) was excavated. Two phases of activity were identified. The earliest phase consisted of a subsoil-cut subcircular pit that may have been a trough. This pit measured 1.8m in maximum diameter and 0.3m in maximum depth. There was evidence for a wooden structure in the form of stake-holes in its base and surrounding its upper edges. It was filled with black, charcoal-rich soil with frequent fragments of degraded sandstone. There was also a series of shallow, irregular-shaped, subsoil-cut pits and depressions, all with an upper fill of black, charcoal-rich soil with frequent fragments of degraded sandstone. It is unclear, however, whether any of these were hearths, owing to the lack of evidence for in situ burning. No artefacts or animal bone were recovered from any of these features' (Deevy 2000, 157-8). Situated in pasture, 140m W of the townland boundary with Fortetna. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. A megalithic structure (LI012-099----) lies 110m to ENE. Identified as Site No. 4 by Celie O’Rahilly in 1991 when it was described as following; ‘This site consists of a circular enclosure demarcated by dense scrub and bushes. There are stones around the perimeter which may represent an enclosure wall. Field clearance stones have also been added to this.’ The site was excavated by Cia Mc Conway (Licence No. 96E0379) in 1997 and the results were summarised as following; ‘The site is a low mound, 25m x 31m, with a heavy coverage of young elm trees and shrubs. There is a low, almost triangular platform to the immediate north-west of the mound and a discontinuous low grassy bank is visible along the western area of the site….Two trenches were hand-excavated in areas where the heavy tree cover would allow. Trench 1 ran for 4.7m in a north-south direction, up onto the top of the mound and to the immediate east of a partially exposed large boulder. Two distinct phases of archaeological activity were recorded. The first saw the deposition of burnt mound material, consisting of loose, heat shattered and burnt stone within a matrix of black, greasy, charcoal-stained, peat-like soil, creating a mound 1.16m high. This indicates the presence of a burnt mound, most probably a fulacht fiadh. At a later stage a second phases of activity occurred with the cutting of a shallow hollow or pit with a formalised stone kerbing found along the top of the mound, along w the southern edge of the trench. To the northern edge of the trench, the burnt mound material was overlain by a spread of larger unburned stones. This may represent an attempt to create a formal stone surface or cairn deposit around the perimeter of the mound material and may have been associated with the activity on the top of the mound. Trench 2 ran 4m in an east-west direction, cutting across a flattish area of ground with some protruding stone. Natural subsoil immediately underlay, a thin covering of topsoil along the western edge of the trench. Elsewhere a compact layer of unburned stone lay within a root medium-dark brown soil, infilling a man-made shallow cut. The stone measured 0.44m deep as it ran into the eastern baulk and created a relatively level surface. Without further excavation, it is impossible to establish whether this cut represented the eastern edge of a stone-filled, wide, shallow ditch or whether the stone layer create a type of platform' (Mc Conway 1998, 110-1). Fulacht fiadh (Area C) excavated during monitoring (Licence No. 08E0171) of topsoil stripping along the route of a Limerick County Council water mains upgrade running from Adare to Patrickswell (MacLeod & Coshman 2008, 3). It consisted of approximately one fifth of a horseshoe-shaped burnt mound which had been partially excavated on the northern side by Cia Mc Conway, ADS Ltd (Excavations 1997, No. 326, 96E0379), during works on the N20 in 1996–7. The mound consisted of a substantial amount of heat-shattered stone in a matrix of charcoal-rich silt (ibid). Excavation revealed three pits beneath the mound that range in size from 2.3–2.4m long, 0.65–3.5m wide and 0.4–1m deep and which all contained similar burnt mound material (ibid, 6-7). The majority of the burnt-mound feature is preserved in situ to the N of the pipeline.
