The medieval bridge of 'Cloghansawny' which provided a crossing point over the Camoge River was described in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick as following; 'There are on the River of Camoge two Bridges, viz: Cloghansawny and Sixmilebridge' (Simington 1938, 94). The bridge is depicted on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Small barony (NLI, MS 718). See attached image showing the bridge on the Down Survey map. This is the more easterly of the two remaining forts [LI032-086----] and consists of a single stone rampart now very collapsed. It is not possible to say on which side the entrance was. In the centre of the enclosed space is a small low semi-circular bank 20' [6m] in diameter, which may be a hut foundation. The overall diameter of the fort is 125' [38m] (O'Kelly 1942-3, 171). The forts are in a straight line and close beside one another. The most easterly of the three [LI032-087----], which was in existence at the time of the first O.S. has now completely disappeared as result of quarrying operations. This fort seems to have had two concentric stone banks between which there was a rockcut fosse. Both banks are now very collapsed and the entrance is not recognisable. On the south side a modern wall has been built over the outer bank. Running N.W.—S.E., across the central enclosed space and dividing it equally, is what seems to be a collapsed stone wall. The overall diameter of the monument is 135' [41m]. These two forts (LI032-086-/085-] are the centre of complex of ancient fields, the fences of which run in various directions over the hill '(O'Kelly 1942-3, 171). The forts are in a straight line and close beside one another. The most easterly of the three [LI032-087----], which was in existence at the time of the first O.S. has now completely disappeared as result of quarrying operations'(O'Kelly 1942-3, 171). Only a quarry is visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs where this 'stone fort' was indicated on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Situated on pasture immediately N of Ballinard House, depicted as a rectangular-shaped building with lime-kiln immediately to W on 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Only the N gable of the castle is shown upstanding on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map. Earthworks of the castle site are visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. Ballinard Castle described in 1943 as following 'There is now no trace of this castle. Westropp gives its successive owners from 1287 until the middle of the eighteenth century. Lewis says that the last structure on the site was built in the 15th century by the Geraldines' (O'Kelly 1943, 170). Castle described by Westropp (1906-7, 187) as following; '1251 Catherussoc (Plea. R.). 1287 T. de Clare leased it to H. f. John (C.S.P.I.). 1302 Adam f. Philip held it (Pipe R.). 1325 Ric. and Avelina de Midia to reply to him about Cathyryssok (Plea R., 127). 1583 Maur. Mac Shane held Ballynahard C[astle]. and vill (Des. R., 37b). 1657 Capt. Garrott FitzGerald held Ballynahard (C.S., xxxi., p. 26). This family held it till late in the following century. Fabric - The C[astle]. was standing in 1827, but was levelled before 1840. It stood to the north of the church [LI032-093001-]. Monument described in 1943 as following; 'This is a very low circular platform surrounded by a slight fosse. The top of the platform slopes from south to north, its greatest height above the field level being 3' [0.9m] and its overall diameter 100' [30m]. It is not marked on the O.S. map' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 171). Situated on poorly drained grassland with stream 30m to NE and site of Ballinard Castle (LI032-090----) 140m to SW, the outline of this earthwork is clearly visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. The platform located on wet partially reclaimed land in close proximity to a stream with nearby castle site may suggest that this could be the site of a watermill (LI032-336----) mentioned in 1654-56 Civil Survey. A linear earthwork in the field to the S of the platform visible on 2005-2012 OSi aerial photographs may be related to this earthwork. In 1840 the levelled church site was described as following; 'The old church of this parish was situated on the top of a fertile hill in the townland of Ballinard half a mile south east of the village of Herbertstown but the foundation of its walls cannot now be traced. The old graveyard (LI032-093002-) in which it stood is still much in use and is called by the people "the Old Abbey" (OSL). The revised edition of the OS 6-inch map incorrectly shows the church site as being located to the NE of the graveyard wall. Westropp (1904-5, 446-7) recorded the following details about Ballinard; 'A parish in Small County at Herbertstown. Catherussoc, 1251 (Plea R. xxxvi Hen. III.); Cathyr Hussoc, held by late Thomas de Clare, 1287 (C.S.P.L, p. 204); Catherussoc, in Grene, 1302. In 1325 Cathyryssok was held by Philip de Ade (Plea R. 127 of xiii Ed. II, m. 3).
