- LI022-144: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI022-144----. Field system on Knockanure described by O'Kelly (1942-3, 232) as following; 'Lynch says that on the hill of Knockanure is "an extensive triple stone circle in a fair state of preservation. The circle differs from all existing ones around Lough Gur." Lynch has apparently made a mistake here, for there is no circle on this hill. There is, nevertheless, a system of ancient fences, and at one point in the system (the location of which is given above) there are what seem to be the remains of a small rectangular field or enclosure. This is marked chiefly by boulders and standing stones and is probably what Lynch called a stone circle. Two sides (adjacent) of it are gone. Some of the ancient fences are marked by low boulders placed at intervals along them, and this probably accounts for the statement that it was a triple circle. Knockanure is a fertile, limestone hillock, which rises up on the edge of the great Ballycullane bog'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 01 August 2019

In level wet pasture with moderate views in all directions. Fulacht Fia (LI022-225----) located 50m to NNW. Surveyed by the ASI in 2000 and described as a well preserved, roughly horseshoe shaped, mound (11.4m NW-SE) of black earth and fire shattered stones. The trough (Wth 2m) was visible as a depression at NNE. A roughly circular cropmark shows the outline of the monument on Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019 where other similar cropmarks are visible to the SE. Area encloses summit and lower slopes of a broad, rocky hill, in pasture. Enclosure (LI031-178001-) lies within the SE quadrant of the field system and a burnt mound (LI031-178003-) lies in the SW quadrant. This field system may be a continuation of a field system (LI031-226----) which lies in an adjacent field adjoining to SE. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified as a roughly rectangular-shaped area covering approx. 9 ha and comprising of intersecting linear cropmarks, some forming rectilinear-shapes, on Bruff Survey aerial photographs (Bruff 112: AP4/3644). Monument surveyed in 2000 by the ASI and described as irregular undulations across this area, which do not form any coherent pattern visible at ground level. Field system no longer visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 06/02/2018 as the area has been planted with forestry. In flat wet pasture 190m W of the townland boundary with Grange and 290m N of a ring-barrow cemetery (LI031-176001/8- and LI031-177001/2-). The site is not depicted on OSi historic maps nor is it visible on either the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on the Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013. Discovered in 2005 during archaeological monitoring of the excavation of tree mounds and field drains in advance of afforestation (O’Mahony 2005, recorded at National Grid Ref: 161972/141713). Deposits of burnt heat shattered stone and dark black charcoal were uncovered immediately below a thin layer of sod (D. 0.03-0.04m, c. 55m OD). Field inspection identified a mound (10m N-S; 6m E-W; H 0.7m) with a slight depression at the centre, presumably the location of a fulacht fia trough. The site is located 3m E of a linear field drain. Further potential fulacht fia sites are located to the W of the drain and their location is indefinable as low field mounds with a similar physical morphology to the site identified during afforestation works. Once the site was identified the drains within an exclusion zone (dims. 55m N-S and 40m E-W) were backflled, this area remains unplanted and is visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 05/04/2006; 28/06/2018 and 20/09/2020. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
