On a gentle S-facing slope, in pasture, 145m N of a watercourse with good views from E-S-W, restricted elsewhere. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 40m). Not depicted on the revised 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map, where area is occupied by the Limerick to Charleville railway line. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2000 and described as no surface remains visible. All field boundaries and the disused railway line have been removed. Monument is not visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 or on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018, although a scar of the former railway line is evident running NW-SE across this area. Monument was probably levelled during the construction of the railway line as route of line ran across the SW quadrant of the possible ringfort. See attached Google Earth orthoimage. Compiled by: Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 30 July 2020 - LI021-165: House - prehistoric, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI021-165----. At the foot of a ridge, in wet pasture, 120m S of a townland boundary with Attyflin. Another prehistoric excavation (LI021-166----) lies 200m to S. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Monument identified in 1999 as a possible prehistoric settlement during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the N20/N21 Adare to Annacotty Road Improvement Scheme. It was excavated (Licence No. 99E0341) by James Eogan and Sinclair Turrell and was described as a penannular ditch, post-holes, several burnt areas and a linear ditch filled with a very dark soil that contained a considerable amount of burnt stone and charcoal (Eogan and Turrell 2000, 1; Eogan and Turrell 2000, 160). Most of the features were very shallow, except a large pit (3.35m x 3.5m) to E of the penannular ditch, which proved to be a stone-lined well. The pennanular ditch (Wth 0.5-0.9m) probably represents a slot trench of a circular structure (approx. diam. 10m), having an entrance to the S (ibid). A possible ring of posts around the outside of the ditch may have provided wall supports and an inner ring of posts probably supported the roof. A central hearth along with a number of stake-holes suggests other internal features (ibid). A series of post-holes to N of the well and some hearths may date earlier than the pennanular structure, which is probably contemporary with the well and the majority of the hearths and pits. Another set of hearths and pits, together with a linear ditch, seem to represent later features (ibid). The well shaft (D 0.6m) was excavated (D 2.4m) and was lined with large, undressed stones set in clay (ibid). Some flat stones were placed around the mouth of the well to provide access. There was a considerable amount of burnt stone in the fill and in the clay lining of the well. Some animal bone and wood were found in the lower fill of this feature. It is anticipated that wood, bone and charcoal samples will provide enough material for radiocarbon dates. Monument not visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 or on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. See attached Google Earth orthoimage. Situated just below the crest of a low, flat-topped, N-facing ridge, in wet pasture. A prehistoric settlement (LI021-165----) lies 200m to N. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Monument identified in 1999 as a possible prehistoric settlement during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the N20/N21 Adare to Annacotty Road Improvement Scheme. It was excavated (License No. 99E0342) by James Eogan and Sinclair Turrell and was described as a shallow ditch (Wth 1m; L 21m) running NE-SW across the site and merging with a shallow pit at the E edge of the excavation area (Eogan and Turrell 2000, 1; Eogan and Turrell 2000, 160). A shallower, slightly wider ditch (L 5.5m) runs NW-SE to the immediate NW of the first ditch. These ditches seem to form the corner of a rectangular enclosure. With the exception of two isolated features, all activity on the site was concentrated within the angle formed by these two ditches. The first ditch was cut by an irregular, shallow pit, midway along its length. North-west of this A shallow depression that had post-holes along its NE edge was to NW of the pit. These, along with a number of adjacent post-holes, enclosed a roughly subrectangular-shaped area (approx. 4m x 2m) and may define a small structure (ibid). Approximately 3m to SW of the longer ditch was a shallow, square stone-lined feature (1.2m x 1.1m) which may have been a hearth. A single pit (diam. 1.6m) was identified c. 15m S of the main cluster of features. The ditches have been interpreted as field boundary drains, while the other features may indicate that there was some small-scale domestic or industrial activity in the corner of a field, as suggested by the charcoal-rich pit and hearth (ibid). The finds from the excavation consisted solely of some small scraps of animal bone. It is hoped that these, together with charcoal and ash samples, will provide enough material for radiocarbon dates.
