Sub-rectangular area (32m NNE-SSW; 18m WNW-ESE) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 1.5m; H 0.17m) best defined on down-slope (Wth 4.7m; H 0.8m) W-NW; scarps melds into earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.4m) SE-WSW with an opening (overall Wth 7.5m; basal Wth 4m) at WSW. External fosse (Wth 4.05m; D 0.3m) NNW-SW. Break of slope where linear scarp (Wth 1.75m; H 0.25m) crosses interior (long-axis WNW-ESE) creating lower level in SW-sector. Dry water channel enters fosse at S and large dry stream bed lies immediate W of monument. Ring-barrow (LI024-184----) c. 150m to WNW. According to Doody (2008, 133) the morphology of this enclosure indicates that it may be Bronze Age in date. Medieval church ruins of Ballynaclogh described in 1840 as following; 'Of the old Church of this Parish only a fragment of one side wall remains about twelve feet [3.65m] in length and four feet [1.2m] in height. The foundations of the other walls are not traceable, so that no idea can now be formed of the extent of this building' (OSL). Westropp (1904-5, 445) recorded the following details on Ballynaclogh; ‘ ‘Ballenecloighe, an appurtenance of Aney Hospital, 1577 (Fiants, 3250); Ballynecloghy, 1601 (ib., 6487). Baile ne Cloice, Stonestown (O'Donovan). Site - Some fragments of wall, 12 feet [3.65m] by 4 feet [1.2m], stood in the graveyard in 1840'. In NE quadrant of graveyard (LI024-077002-). Fragment of limestone wall (long-axis N-S; L 5.2m; H 2.2m; T 0.95m). Remains of possible window opening (Wth 1.2m) in centre has an inward splay on N-side indicating that this may be the E-wall. Wall constructed with large stones on exterior and interior face. Stone (dims. 0.2m E-W; 0.15m N-S; T 0.05m) projecting from interior of wall at S-end and located 0.45m above present ground level may indicate the return of S-wall. Grave stones surround church wall. Named on current edition OS 6-inch map as 'Ballynaclogh Church (in ruins)'. Sub-rectangular area (dims. 38m N-S; 47m E-W) defined by mortared limestone wall (H 1.25-1.5m) to S (L 50m), W (L 40m) and N (L 44m) and stone-faced scarp (H 1.3m; L 33m) along roadside to E. Interior of graveyard uneven. Rectangular area (dims. 26m N-S; 25m E-W) in NE-quadrant defined by slight scarp (Wth 1.9m; H 0.5m) to S and W may indicate outline of an earlier enclosure. Remains of Ballynaclogh Church (LI024-077001-) in E quadrant and concentration of headstones within. Earliest headstone noted 1863 and most recent 2006. Rectangular area (dims. 38m N-S; 22m E-W) forming W-half of graveyard recently cleared back exposing rock outcrop; no headstones or gravemarkers noted. Accessed by gateway or stone steps to SE. Identified as a small, circular-shaped cropmark by the Bruff aerial photographic survey (Bruff 39.1: AP 4/3671) in 1986. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 163.1; AP 4/3671) as a circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 16m) and consists of a central circular area surrounded by a fosse. The ditch-barrow is visible on the Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. There appears to be a ring-barrow (Wth 9.5m) located 35 NE of the ditch-barrow (LI024-227----).
