A watermill mill is depicted on the 17th-century Down Survey parish map of Kilmurry (NLI, Ms 718) in this vicinity but an archaeological excavation by Tracy Collins (98E0607) revealed that the 'Ballysimon Mills' depicted on the OS map is 19th-century in date with no evidence of the medieval mill. The excavation results were summarised as following; 'This site is marked as a mill on the 17th-century Down Survey Map of the area. There is a small building c. 5m x 7m) at this location, of undressed limestone of roughly coursed rubble construction. The building was investigated to see whether this was the 17th-century structure or there had been an earlier building at this site. Owing to the recent usage of the site as a creamery and later a farmyard the only available position for a trench was in the interior of the extant structure. Because of the unstable condition of much of the remains, a trench, 1.5m x 3.5m, was hand-excavated in the south-east corner of the building. The mill had been filled with a large amount of modern debris, such as household refuse and loose masonry (no architectural features were noted). The original floor surface was of rough cobbles and a reused limestone flag. The floor was set in a bed of gritty, white mortar with a brick, stone and mortar mix below as a foundation. The walls of the structure rested on the underlying red boulder clay material, with the east wall being partially strengthened by the addition of a plinth, 0.1m wide, along its base. This strengthening, it is assumed, would have made the wall more secure, as it was the wall that would have held the original overshot wheel. It would also have guarded against the wall being undermined by the lapping of the mill-race water. The investigation did not reveal any artefacts of archaeological significance and proved that an earlier building did not exist on the site of the extant mill structure'(www.excavations.ie). Archaeological excavation in 2001 under licence No. 01E0030 was summarised by Aegis Archaeology as following; 'The leg bones of a skeleton were revealed during monitoring of the destruction of a badger sett by the Wildlife Section of Dúchas. This monitoring was undertaken as part of the construction of the Limerick Southern Ring-Road. Upper leg bones were first recovered, and two kneecaps. It was thought that the remainder of the skeleton would be present, but upon excavation it was found that only the upper portions of the lower legs were left in situ. It was clear from the remains that they had been cut in antiquity and post-mortem. The bones recovered represented an adult individual of undetermined sex. The remains were found only c. 0.15m below the surface ground level of the badger sett. They were covered with a light mid-brown silty loam topsoil and were cut into and resting upon a very similar material. It appeared from the excavation that the remains had been surrounded by a crude stone setting of twelve stones. Despite the fact that it appeared as though the leg bones had been cut in antiquity and the lower legs and both feet were missing, the stone setting had not been truncated, which was thought to be unusual. Two isolated features located in the same field as the human remains were excavated under the same licence. Both features were circular in plan and showed evidence for heating or burning within them. They were partly filled with heat-reddened subsoil and both had tentative evidence for flues. Identified in 2001 as human remains and two isolated features discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the Limerick South Ring Road and subsequently excavated (License No. 01E0030) (Collins 2001, 4). The lower leg bones of a skeleton were revealed during monitoring of the destruction of a badger sett by the Wildlife Section of Dúchas (ibid). These were discovered 0.15m below the ground surface and consisted of the lower portions of the upper leg bones, two kneecaps and the upper portions of the lower leg bones (ibid, 15). The remainder of the lower legs were not in situ and these had been cut post-mortem, in antiquity. The rest of the body was missing from the pelvis upwards. It was clear from the remains that they had been cut in antiquity and post-mortem. The bones represent an adult individual of undetermined sex. The remains had been surrounded by a crude stone setting of twelve stones, which despite the partial recovery of this skeleton, remained undisturbed (ibid). Two isolated pits were recovered in the same field. Both features were circular in plan and showed evidence for heating or burning within them (ibid, 16-18). They were partly filled with heat-reddened subsoil and both had tentative evidence for flues. No finds were recovered from the features (ibid). In field 150m N of the Groody River now occupied by the Ballysimon Roundabout. The archaeological site (LI005-102----) includes four separate areas of archaeological activity investigated in a ploughed field (‘Field 3’) in advance of the construction of the Limerick Southern Ring Road (Coyne & Hayes 2001). The site covers a large area (dims. 240m N-S and 200m E-W). The excavated features include; a pit (3:66); pits and postholes (3:339); two pits (3:425); and surface complex of postholes (3:447). The features contained charcoal and included deposits of burnt clay. No artefacts were recovered from the excavated pits and post-holes. Surface finds from the topsoil included a dispersed flint scatter of worked flint and chert, and a Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age barbed a tanged arrowhead. The identification of the prehistoric flint suggests an early prehistoric date for the excavated features. No function has been ascribed to the excavated material by the excavator.
