On poorly drained grassland on the N bank of the Mulkear River, which marks the townland boundary with Scart, and 50m E of the townland boundary with Foyle. The monument is depicted as a small circular shaped area defined by a bank or possibly a small mound on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. On this map a Mill Dam is shown crossing the river approx. 45m to W which feeds a the mill race of Scart Mill standing 280m to W. On the 1897 OS 25-inch map the earthwork is shown as a raised circular area or platform (approx. int. diam. 24m) defined by a scarp. Monument visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019 as tree-covered earthwork standing immediately N of the river with mature trees to the W. A drainage channel or watercourse running roughly E-W is visible 20m to the N. This earthwork standing on poorly drained land immediately adjacent to the Mulkear River and to the nearby mill and mill-race may be related to a medieval mill site at this location. The medieval mill (LI006-070----) of Ballyvarra depicted on the Down Survey map was located further upstream closer to the E boundary of the townland. This earthwork may have been some form of medieval fortification due to its riverside location and waterlogged surroundings. In grassland, in SE sector of a large field approx. 100m W of the public road R506. Depicted as a sub-circular shaped area (approx. int. diam. 21m; ext. dims. 27m NE-SW x 32m NW-SE) on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. This map shows post-1700 field boundaries intersecting the site at E and SW. The 1897 25-inch OS map depicts the monument as a sub-circular shaped area (approx. ext. dims. 36m NE-SW x 32m NW-SE) defined by a bank that is incorporated into a field boundary at SE. Visible on Digital Globe imagery taken 2011-13 as a sub-circular-shaped area enclosed by tree-covered bank with relict field boundaries visible to N and W. Google Earth imagery 2018 shows a similar image with the field recently planted. In grassland, 460m N of the Mulkear River and approx. 300 W of the public road R506. No monument is depicted at this location on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. A semi-circular shaped rise of ground (approx. dims. NW-SE 22m x NE-SW 15m) is depicted at this location on the 1897 OS 25-inch map. On this map the raised area of ground is intersected by a post-1700 field boundary at N. A trackway is visible 23m to SE. Digital Globe imagery taken 2011-13 shows no surface trace of any monument at this location. Google Earth imagery taken 28/06/2018 shows the field recently planted with no surface remains visible of any monument. Doubtful antiquity, may be a post-1700 feature. A Google Earth orthoimage taken 06/02/2018 shows faint outline of possible earthwork with relict field system to N. See attached Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 06/02/2018 Compiled by: Fiona Rooney and Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 9 June 2020 - LI006-046: Barrow - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI006-046----. In rough poorly drained grassland, 80m N of the R506 and 40m S of a local access road. Depicted as a large circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank and ditch on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. The 1897 OS 25-inch map depicts the monument as a raised circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 24m N-S X 22m E-W; max. ocerall diam. 62m NE-SW) enclosed by a ditch (approx. W 10m), bank (approx. W 4.2m) with traces of an outer ditch from N to E. Post-1700 field boundaries intersect the monument at W and S. Google Earth orthoimage taken 2018 shows the monument heavily overgrown with trees and drainage features to the SE. The wetland location along with the representation of the monument on various editions of the OS maps suggests that this may be the remains of some form of barrow site or henge type monument due to the presence of an internal ditch. Visible as a scrub covered earthwork in SE corner of field on Digital Globe imagery taken 2011-13. Google Earth imagery taken 28/06/2018 indicates that the boundary in the SE sector of the field has been removed and the area is shown as scrub with no clear evidence for any enclosing feature.
