In unploughed ground within a tillage field, 300m SW of a series of archaeological excavations (LI021-182----) at Adare Villas. Depicted as a circular fort on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. On the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map and later OSi maps the ringfort is depicted as an embanked enclosure. Inspected by ASI in 2000 and described as a slightly raised circular-shaped area (int. diam. 30m) defined by an earthen scarped edge (H 0.05m) with entrance at S (Wth 4m). The interior undulates and slopes slightly to N and was clear of undergrowth. The ringfort is now overgrown with scrub woodland as visible on Google earth orthophoto taken 28/06/2018. In a housing scheme known as Adare Villas, 170m to SE of Adare Demesne townland boundary and 580m to W of the River Maigue, which also marks a boundary with Mountwilliam townland. An enclosure (LI021-182003-) and cremation pits (LI021-182002-) lie 130m to SE and 145m to N, respectively. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Features identified in 2005 by Ross McLeod and John Kavanagh during monitoring of topsoil stripping for a holiday home development on the lands of Adare Manor (McLeod and Kavanagh 2005, 1). Features excavated (Licence No. 05E0169) in 2005 and described as a metalworking site, several anomalous pits and later field drains (ibid). In general, the area of the excavation and surrounding field had been under intensive agricultural activity for some time, reflected by the regular plough marks identified across the exposed surface of the field. Also hand-excavated field drains along with modern machine-cut examples were located across the site, demonstrating a continual process of land improvement. See attached Google Earth orthoimages. Features excavated (Licence No. 05E0169) in 2005 and described as a cluster of small pits that contained human cremated bone. The quantity of bone recovered from each pit was small, similar to a token deposit, which is indicative of burial practices dating to the Bronze Age period. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Monument identified during as an enclosure during monitoring of topsoil stripping for a holiday home development on the lands of Adare Manor (McLeod and Kavanagh 2005, 1). Monument excavated (Licence No. 05E0169) by Ross McLeod and John Kavanagh in 2005 and described as a large semicircular-shaped area (30m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by a ditch (max. D 1.76m). Human skeletal remains, which were placed with crossed hands, were recovered from the base of the ditch and indicate an Early Christian date for the body and feature. There were no indicators for habitation within the interior, although a small metalworking pit, several anomalous pits and later field drains (LI021-182001-) lie 145m to S. A cluster of small cremation pits (LI021-082002-) was also recovered 240m to SE. Archaeological excavations carried out by John Kavanagh under licence no. 05E0169 were summarised as following; 'An archaeological investigation was carried out at Boulabally housing development, Boulabally, Adare, Co. Limerick, prior to the construction of 30 houses at the site. Monitoring of the removal of topsoil at the pre-construction phase commenced on 2 February 2005. Stripping of the c. 12-acre site revealed a small number of archaeological features, concentrated in two main areas (north-eastern and south-eastern) of the field. In the north-eastern corner a large semicircular enclosure ditch formed the largest archaeological element of the investigation. The ditch measured 20m east-west by 30m internally, with a maximum depth of 1.76m. Within the area delimited by the ditch there were no indicators for habitation, although activity at the site is shown by a small pit that was utilised in the processing/manufacturing of metals. Several anomalous pit features and later field drains were also identified within the internal area. Human skeletal remains were recovered from the base of the ditch, placed with crossed hands, which indicates an Early Christian date for the body and feature. In the south-eastern corner of the field were a cluster of small pits that contained probable human cremated bone. The quantity of bone recovered from each pit was small (almost token amounts), which is indicative of burial practices from the Bronze Age period. In general, the area of the field had been under intensive agricultural activity for some time, save for the northernmost 50m, which remained relatively uncultivated. Hand-excavated field drains together with modern machine-cut examples were located across the site, demonstrating a continual process of land improvement. This was borne out by the large quantity of ploughmarks identified throughout the field' (www.excavations.ie). Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Boulabally. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Boulabally, about 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
