This site was identified during Phase II test excavation of the N8 Cashel to Mitchelstown road improvement scheme carried out by Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd in May 2006. The site was subsequently excavated [A035/000, E2306] between 24 June and 4 July 2006. It consisted of a burnt mound, whose area measured 17.5m (north-south) by 12m, located on the northern bank of a stream. The burnt mound sealed a trough, which had traces of a stone lining, concentrated mainly along the edges. This site was located 150m downstream of Site 4602A2 (see No. 1244 below), a burnt mound, and 600m downslope from Site 47001A, a ring-ditch site (see No. 1282 below, E2341) (McQuade, Molloy & Moriarty 2009, 115-8). - LI058-020: Cremation pit, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI058-020----. This site was investigated under Ministerial Directive A035/00 in advance of the N8 road improvement scheme between Cashel, Co. Tipperary, and Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. It was located on low-lying pastureland at the foothills of the Galtee Mountains and was situated 75m to the east of Site 4602A2 (see No. 1244 below, E2339) and 210m south-west of Site 4602A3 (see No. 1245 below, E2340). The site lay at 117.32m OD and the area of excavation measured 18m by 13m. A single cremation burial was excavated [E2338] on the site. The burial was contained within an upright food vessel that had been placed within an unlined pit. The pottery was fragmented, but most of the vessel survived. The cremated bone was deposited with black charcoal-rich silty sand and a similar deposit of black silty sand with a higher charcoal content was found beneath the food vessel. At the time of writing, specialist analysis is ongoing (McQuade, Molloy & Moriarty 2009, 125). - LI058-021: Kiln - corn-drying, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI058-021----. This site was excavated under Ministerial Directive A035/00 in advance of the N8 road improvement between Cashel, Co. Tipperary, and Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. It was located 75m to the west of a Bronze Age cremation burial (see No. 1243 above, E2338) and c. 135m west of an area of burning (see No. 1245 below, E2340). The area of excavation measured 60m by 20m. The site consisted of a large fulacht fiadh and two smaller spreads of burnt-mound material and a kiln. A kiln was located 20m north of the fulacht fiadh. It was subrectangular in plan and measured 2.74m by 0.9m. The fire bowl was located in its northern end and was 1.02m deep. The kiln was probably used for drying cereal crops. The results of specialist analysis of material recovered during excavation are awaited. - LI058-022: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI058-022----. The main feature on this site was a large fulacht fiadh located on the south end of the site, just west of the former river channel. A rectangular trough had been cut into the subsoil just 0.7m to the west of the river. The trough probably held water sourced from the river. It measured 5m by 1.9m and was 0.4m deep. Several large stones at the edges of the trough may have been part of a stone lining and there was a large timber (0.85m by 0.22m) and a number of wooden fragments at the base of the trough. The hearth was evident from an area of scorched earth immediately to the north of the trough. There were two adjoining pits located 4.5m to the north-west of the trough. These were 0.99m and 1.04m by 0.72m respectively and were up to 0.38m deep. These pits held fire debris, which may have been linked to the hearth. The trough and hearth were sealed by a large mound of black silty clay, with frequent inclusions of burnt stone and charcoal. This measured 19m by 13.5m and varied greatly in depth. It was an average of 0.14m deep towards the north-west and was up to 1m deep at the south-east edge. There were four smaller deposits of burnt material c. 25m north of the large mound. These spreads had a lower frequency of charcoal and the largest of them measured 11.5m by 5.3m. The others were between 1.7m by 1m and 2.6m by 2.5m and between 0.09m and 0.4m deep (McQuade, Molloy & Moriarty 2009, 102-4). - LI058-023: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI058-023----. This site was investigated under Ministerial Directive A035/00 in advance of the N8 road improvement from Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, to Cashel, Co. Tipperary. It was located on low-lying land at the foothills of the Galtee Mountains to the north-east of a Bronze Age cremation burial (see No. 1243 above, E2338) and a fulacht fiadh (see No. 1244 above, E2339). Two phases of activity were evident on site. Phase 1 was represented by a series of stake- and post-holes and a pit. Three of the stake-holes formed a north-west to south-east oriented row which extended for 1.3m. The remaining post- and stake-holes had no coherent plan. The pit was 0.35m in diameter and 0.25m deep. Fragments of burnt animal bone and charcoal within the fill suggest that it may have been used to hold refuse. During Phase 2 a fire on site resulted in an accumulation of burnt material 0.05m deep. This covered an area measuring 4.5m by 3.9m. There were no finds from this site and the results of radiocarbon analysis are awaited. Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Brackbaun. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Brackbaun, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
